We don’t cover Travelodge much on Head for Points, but you never know when you might find that it is convenient to stay in one.

The chain is expanding with the acquisition of nine three-star Hotel Campanile sites.

It was also announced that an ibis hotel in Bromsgrove is joining the group.

Travelodge buys nine Hotel Campanile sites

The Hotel Campanile sites involved are in:

  • Birmingham
  • Bradford
  • Dartford
  • Leicester
  • Liverpool
  • Northampton
  • Milton Keynes
  • Salford
  • Swindon, image above

There are 951 rooms in total.

This is not a simple rebranding. Travelodge has bought the nine sites outright, four as freeholds and five as long leaseholds. Last year, the company bought six Hotel Campanile sites in Spain. Campanile is owned by Chinese group Jin Jiang via Louvre Hotels Group.

This is not the end of Hotel Campanile in the UK. It seems that a handful of sites will remain in cities such as Cardiff and Hull. The broader brand contains over 300 hotels, primarily in Europe.

The UK may not be in the EU but it is in Europe. Perhaps “primarily in continental Europe.” would be a better choice of words?

    • Mike Fish says:

I don’t see an issue, it is primarily in Europe, the rest being in Africa and Asia.

      • Tom says:

But when someone tells me that they are “off to Europe” for a holiday, they generally do not mean that they are going to Brighton or Blackpool!

    • Andrew. says:

      “On the Mainland”?

    • CJD says:

Most people would understand that sentence to mean continental Europe.

    • Tom says:

Many folks consider that “Europe” starts at Calais, and that we are an island off the coast of Europe.

That green ‘structure’ looks like a drain from the room above!

  • Mike P says:

Blast from the past. Surprised they’re still going and that the Campanile in Cardiff is still there. Remember eating in the restaurant there in the early 90s!

  • ADS says:

I’d never hear of Campanile … but came across this investment brochure from a few years ago where they were planning a huge expansion … guess that didn’t happen!

I remember about 20 years ago staying at the one in Swindon on and off for several months (£19.99 a night).

The chef was young and trained in a top Paris restaurant.
We were eating chef “specials board” gourmet dishes for £8. It was so good we used to go and eat even when not staying at the hotel.

According to visitors who booked their own hotel when they come to site, The one in Runcorn was always full of working girls…

The MK one is an utter dump.
