Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get a 25% bonus when you transfer Nectar points to Avios – worth it?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios has launched a conversion bonus for anyone sitting on a pile of Nectar points.

Let’s take a look at the deal. Full details are on avios.com here.

The standard conversion rate of Nectar points to Avios is 400 : 250. This has remained unchanged despite two devaluations for people converting in the opposite direction.

As a Nectar point is worth 0.5p when spent at Sainsburys, Argos etc, you are giving up £2 of free shopping in return for 250 Avios. In other words, you are buying Avios for 0.8p. This is a decent deal.

Until 30th April, you will receive a 15% or 25% bonus on every transfer INTO Avios.

A one-off transfer will get you a 15% bonus.

An auto-conversion transfer will get you a 25% bonus. Assuming you are moving over your entire Nectar balance, you might as well activate auto-convert and then, if you wish, disable it later.

(For clarity, there is no bonus in the opposite direction. The rate from Avios into Nectar remains at 400:400.)

This looks pretty attractive. For every 400 Nectar points you convert, you will receive (with a 25% bonus) 312 Avios.

Put another way, you are giving up £2 of free shopping to earn 312 Avios, so you are ‘paying’ 0.64p per Avios. It’s an excellent return.

If you happen to be sitting on a pile of Nectar points with no real plan for them, you should seriously think about this deal.

What is the small print?

There doesn’t seem to be much, which is good:

  • The offer runs to 30th April
  • Transfers must be in multiples of 400 Nectar points
  • You can make multiple transfers in that period and get the bonus on all of them

It seems that anyone who already auto-converts their Nectar points into Avios will receive the bonus automatically.

I expect the bonus to post in arrears, not with the original transfer.

The usual caps apply – you can manually transfer a maximum of 80,000 Nectar points into Avios per calendar month so, as this offer does not straddle a month end, you are capped at 80,000 Nectar points. Automatic conversions are capped at a lower level – a maximum of 40,000 Nectar points per calendar quarter.

The only caveat I would make is to remind you that Marriott Bonvoy will become a Nectar transfer partner very soon – see here. If you value Marriott points as much as (or more than) Avios, you may want to hold off and see how good that deal turns out to be.

I do value Marriott – would be very nice to have a good hotel earning option now that my business hotel stays have dried up. It would be good to have a go live Nectar to Marriott date if anyone is in the know ?

  • ND says:

When do we expect news for the Marriott and Nectar partnership? Announcements in November 2024 touted early 2025 as a release date but it’s already mid-April – are we looking at mid-2025 now?

  • Jonathan says:

Marriott will become an interesting option, as it gives the ability to earn points for 40 airline programs where you must have Marriott points in order exchange into your desired program, many of them, it’s the only way of earning outside taking cash booking flights

    • Rob says:

It’s all down to the conversion rate though. 1:1 between Marriott and Nectar would be attractive (and simple). Our fair value of a Bonvoy point is 0.5p (although I tend to get 0.75p by redeeming selectively) so it could work BUT I suspect Marriott’s book value of a point is a lot lower, meaning paying 0.5p to Nectar on transfers the other way is not so attractive.

      • Ken says:

Would it have to be a 2 way transfer ?

Does the rate have to be the same both ways ?

Anything lower than 1:1 from Nectar to Marriott surely wouldn’t see much traction.

        • Rob says:

          It sounds 2-way so far.

I agree rate may differ, but when that happens it’s usually a sign you’re being ripped off somewhere.

You and I both know 1:1 is the only rate that makes sense. However as Marriott ‘buy points’ offers tend to cap at 0.7p someone is probably thinking 3:2 is more lucrative.

      • Jonathan says:

It’s annoying yes, that £1 spent on an Amex MR card doesn’t mean 1 point in all the 40 airline programs Marriott partners with, I think the very highest is 0.83, it’s however still a good option if it’s where you’ll make a lot of redemptions, and the likes of Avios aren’t used much

We of course don’t know what the transfer ratio’ll be…

  • The Original David says:

Of course the best value Nectar redemption is 400 points for a Caffe Nero, where you’re getting about 1p per Nectar point. So the real question is: do you value 312 Avios more highly than a free any-size drink at Nero?

(To be clear I’m not a Nero fan, but do drink a lot of their free coffee thanks to Octopus and Nectar.)

    • John says:

I wouldn’t even pay £1.56 (0.5p per avios) for a drink at Caffe Nero

    • Ryan says:

Queue the week long debate over how free 25% discounts, Three £1 drinks and Octopus Energy weekly drink adjusts the Nero value

    • kevin86 says:

Only best if you drink coffee

    • Peter K says:

I don’t like the coffee at the local Nero, tastes burned every time (I tried a few times over a few months with different baristas).
They don’t do gluten free sandwiches/rolls there. The gluten free snacks are substandard and overpriced, even compared to Costa etc.

For me Nero is the worst redemption. Ymmv.

  • Stuart says:

Hmmmm- I did the auto convert expecting the 25% bonus. Transferred 1200 Nectar and got 750 Avios rather than the expected 936. Are they posting as separate transactions?

  • ADS says:

I keep getting an error message when trying to setup Auto Conversion

I’ve unlocked spend on the Nectar App … but is there a 24 hour delay on allowing spend after unlocking?

  • Drolma-la says:

Me, too. (But it’s not even possible to get through to the relevant form for starting the process using Safari on a Mac.

    • ADS says:

      i’m using Chrome on a Mac …

      BA 2FA works
Nectar 2FA initiates … but fails after I enter the code

      will try again tomorrow

  • Just Nick says:

Constantly just getting an error when I try to set it up.
