easyJet’s CEO confirms loyalty scheme plans as we visit the new Southend base

Three weeks ago we told you, exclusively, that easyJet was planning to launch a loyalty scheme later this year.

For legal reasons our story contained a number of ‘allegedly’, ‘rumoured’, ‘might’ etc phrases but we believed it to be true.

I was with easyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis on Monday at London Southend airport and asked him directly if the HfP story was correct.

Kenton said that he had read the article. Whilst easyJet is not going to launch a loyalty scheme imminently, it is something that they are looking at.

Kenton sees a weak spot for British Airways in early 2026 when those who have failed to retain their status for 2026/27 are looking for options.

The story was immediately picked up by Reuters:

What is happening with easyJet at London Southend?

We were at Southend for the launch of easyJet’s new base at the airport. This is easyJet’s 10th UK base following the Birmingham launch last year.

Whilst easyJet has been flying from Southend for a while now, it has been using aircraft based elsewhere.

As of this week there are three A320neo aircraft based permanently at London Southend. This is important in terms of jobs – the pilots will live locally (it turns out the daughter of Southend’s mayor is an easyJet First Officer!), the cabin crew will live locally and the maintenance staff will live locally.

This summer will see easyJet operate up to 122 flights per week from Southend. It is the only easyJet base where every flight is also available via easyJet Holidays – this is very much a leisure base.

Here is the easyJet network from London Southend:

As we’ve written on HfP before, London Southend is underrated if you live or work in London. There are three trains per hour from Liverpool Street and Stratford, it is 52 minutes from Liverpool Street and the railway station is literally two minutes walk from the terminal entrance.

With little of the queuing or delays that impact Heathrow and, to a lesser extent, Gatwick, it’s a very pleasant airport to use and worth considering.

“it turns out the daughter of Southend’s mayor is an easyJet First Officer!”

I’n struggling to understand why this required an exclamation mark or indeed what the relevance of this fact was to the story.

    • Rob says:

The relevance is that, with aircraft based in Southend, the First Officer in question can now have a job flying from round the corner from her house.

I forgot to say that the mayor was present to give a speech, as often happens at these events, which made it spookier that his daughter was an easyJet pilot.

      • mhughes says:

Ah, the mayor being present does make more sense out of the comment.

  • Andy Stock says:

The train service to London Southend is operated by Greater Anglia, which is one of the most reliable train operators in the UK.

Plus the trains are only a few years old with air con and plug / USB sockets at every pair of seats.

  • tw33ty says:

It’s a shame they’ve stopped doing flexi fare packages

  • KG says:

Issue is on the return – if you dont pay for front row seats, expect a wait of atleast 15min at immigration as they don’t have e-gates. LCY on the other hand, from the point of disembarking to bank station is <40min if you dont have bags to collect and 2.5quid on the dlr. But yes, would pick this over Luton and Stansted anyday! Maybe the Southend mayor could consider securing investment to construct e-gates ;)?

    • Matarredonda says:

Based on my frequent experience at Stanstead airport, for example Southend is fortunate not to have e gates

  • ken says:

Do they really operate 122 FROM Southend ?

Paris seems to be 4 departures per week and not all year round.
Down to 2 departures per week in winter.

Pretty misleading to say “10 x week – Year round”

  • Kathy says:

Always happy to see SEN news, as a local!

My record for getting home after a flight was 20 minutes from wheels down on the SEN runway to my couch. Hand luggage only, obviously, and catching the train as it pulled into the platform, plus living a 10 minute walk from Southend Victoria. Couldn’t do it now I’m a half hour walk from train station….

  • Craig says:

Flew from LPL yesterday morning at peak time. 12 minutes from parking the car in long-stay to sitting in airside cafe ordering breakfast and this included dropping off luggage. Not surprising that Which? has rated LPL the best airport in the UK. easyJet departed early and arrived early too!
The much-maligned MAN T2 is pretty decent now as well.

    • Throwawayname says:

I took a relative to T2 the other day, it really is quite a nice space and even security seemed to be moving quickly (my relative did have fast track but the regular queues looked fine too). The only real drawback is the long distances that one has to walk – well over 10 minutes from the train to check in, then the gates aren’t exactly a short distance either.

  • Charles says:

EasyJet just denied me boarding because they claimed my travel on didn’t fit in their metal cage. I showed them it did but they then said it didn’t fit sideways which is total nonsense! Does anyone know what action one can take against them being me and my friend lost out on a skiing trip and the costs associated with it? They were 100% in the wrong and there seems to be nothing I can do about it!

    • Craig says:

Why didn’t you just pay for them to put it in the hold (and argue about the cost later) rather than miss out on the whole trip?

    • John33 says:

Why couldn’t you just pay the fine, board, and then make a claim for a refund?

      • Charles says:

I tried but as I was in the process of doing this they closed the flight on me.

        • John33 says:

That simply cannot be true. It takes two seconds to pay. There is nothing to “try”. You were probably arguing with them and after some time passed they decided to offload you. So you chose to miss out on your ski holiday.
