(DEAD?) Got a PayPal account? Get 25% off IHG hotel bookings

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG, owner of the InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Hotel Indigo, Staybridge Suites etc brands, has launched a new partnership.

Until the end of June, anyone with a PayPal account will get a 25% discount on their IHG hotel bookings.

Even better, rooms booked under this offer are fully cancellable.

(EDIT, 7.30am – this rate appears to have been pulled. We will investigate.)

Get 25% off IHG hotel bookings with PayPal

You can find this offer on the IHG website here.

Here are the rules:

  • you must stay at least two nights
  • your stay must include at least one night on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday
  • you must book at least seven days in advance
  • you will save at least 25% off Best Flexible Rate
  • unlike IHG sale rates, your discounted room retains roughly the same cancellation rules as Best Flexible Rate – you can cancel without penalty within 3-7 days of arrival, depending on hotel
  • stays earn IHG One Rewards points as usual
  • the last day to book is 30th June but stays can be at a later date

In theory you can be asked to prove that you have a PayPal account at check-in.

You won’t be paying for the room by PayPal – indeed, this isn’t even possible. You will pay at check-out as usual.

Here is an example from Kimpton Fitzroy in London (image above) for a stay in London:

IHG PayPal partner discount

As you can see, the PayPal promo rate is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than any other booking option, even non-refundable ones.

If you don’t have a PayPal account (not that you need one to book, but you will need one if you want to remain entirely within the terms of the offer), my referral link here gives you £10 when you make your first payment of £5+ for a product or service via PayPal within 30 days.

Bookings must be made via this page of the IHG website.

Not that it’s working anyway, but the IHG web page clearly says:

‘at least 25% off our Best Flexible Rate when you book our partner rate and pay with PayPal’

So it’s a requirement is that you pay with Paypal. Presumably that is coming soon …

    • LittleNick says:

I guess then that would make it a pre-pay rate rather than pay at checkout

      • mkcol says:

You can pay with PayPal in several retailers, so it could easily be an upon check out payment made with PayPal.

  • Adam says:

yeah nothing coming up for me either. tried all of London hotels and singapore.

  • Emad says:

Should they not provide a list of participating hotels?

  • e14 says:

So even using the associated corp code
787159194 I can’t seem to get this to work even on the hotels shown in the article

  • JDB says:

The execution of this offer seems fairly standard for the IHG group but a 25% discount essentially offered to anyone illustrates yet again just how bad/expensive ‘member’ rates are as well as FHR, Virtuoso or other travel agent rates using best available or flexible are such that direct contact with the individual hotel offers huge scope.

    • LittleNick says:

Interesting, is it possible for example to negotiate better rates/or inclusions at a Kimpton (or any other luxury hotel in a chain) for that matter? How would one go about this roughly, I’d be surprised they offer anything better when surely they’d just say go to the website?

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

The only time I’d think to contact the hotel about “better” rates would be if I was making a large group booking or needed an extended stay where they might be open to some form of negotiation either on a reduced rate or include breakfast for example in a rate where it’s not already included.

But I’m not in either of those groups and the railcard rate plus my diamond benefits suit me fine.

And if you’re not bothered with points etc just book the cheapest rate you can find on an OTA.

        • JDB says:

@BA Flyer IHG Stayer – I wouldn’t think of doing anything other than contact a hotel directly after having ascertained all the other deals around.

Many, many years ago I was booked for one night into the Albany hotel in Glasgow (it was demolished in 2008!) as part of a package deal. As part of the deal I was given a docket to hand to reception on arrival. Being rather nosey, I watched to see what the receptionist wrote on the docket when I handed it over. It appears the docket was to be returned to the package operator showing how much they would be paid for my room – £14.50. According to the rack rate details in reception, had I walked in off the street and requested a room, I would have been charged £76. As I presume the Albany made some sort of profit from charging £14.50, it shows how much wriggle room there is when it come to offering discounts!!

        • JDB says:

@Paul W – yes, the latitude hotels have to offer discounts, confirmed upgrades, extra inclusions etc. is vast. This applies particularly when hotels have to cater for a less affluent domestic tourist.

        • RussellH says:

The system you describe was pretty much standard back then – certainly in 2008 – for package tour bookings.
What you refer to as a “docket” was known in the trade as a voucher – the ones I issued included the following text (in the hotelier’s own language) “Please return this voucher together with your invoice to us for payment”.
Within a few days of my customer’s stay I would receive the voucher and the invoice by post.
Never, ever, though, did I receive a voucher on which someone had written the price due or, indeed, any other figure). That was only stated on the accompanying invoice.
I would have thought it just as likely (if not more so) that £14.50 was to be deducted from the rack rate to produce the invoiced rate.

      • JDB says:

You can try it at any hotel above a certain price, but there’s no secret sauce. You need to butter them up a bit, find an angle. Simply asking for discount/inclusions etc. in a very direct manner isn’t likely to yield much.

        • Dubious says:

I used to do this when in Japan when I was a bit younger. Speak that he reception staff directly, ask for their lowest rate, ask if there’s anything cheaper, then see what they come back with….

The gaul of it might have helped gain their pity…

  • Paul W says:

IHG IT glitching at the moment?
I have tried booking a roon in the IC in Dublin in late May for a couple of weekend nights, and it is not offering any pricing as the “Number of guests exceed room occupancy for one or more rooms”. This come up regardless of whether I select one room with single or double occupancy! Same thing happened when booking via the ‘use Ambassador cerificate’ link, or directly without any referral code or link.

  • jannis says:

    tried this last week
    successfully booked three stays

  • Iulia Babici says:

It is not working for me for any hotels, dates and counties I tried. No PayPal rates showing. Disappointing as I have an upcoming trip to France in the next month, which would qualify in terms of nights etc and I could use the PayPal discount.
