Where does British Airways offer ‘overnight bag drop’?

‘Overnight bag drop’ is one of those features which some travellers appreciate and others turn their nose up and say ‘What’s the point?’.

A reader mentioned this to me the other day. I realised we’d never done a full article on where British Airways offers it, so I thought it was worth a look.

It is currently available at five terminals across four UK airports. You can’t access the service outside the UK.

What is ‘overnight bag drop’?

At selected airports, British Airways allows you to check in your luggage the day before your flight.

In theory, it’s a benefit for both parties:

  • by moving some passengers from the busy morning peak to the quieter afternoon period, the airline can spread out demand for check-in desks
  • by checking their baggage the day before, the passenger can have a less stressful start to their trip the following day

The vast majority of users of ‘overnight bag drop’ will be passengers staying at airport hotels the night before their flight. Those with young children may appreciate the ability for one passenger to pop over to the terminal with the luggage whilst the children stay in the hotel. No-one wants their children stuck in a long queue first thing in the morning.

One person can check in bags on behalf of multiple people as long as all passports and boarding passes or tickets can be shown. The official rules on ba.com are here.

Virgin do the same as mentioned. Annoyingly though, Virgin have told me (and it is on all emails) that every passenger has to be at drop off (maybe US-bound thing?). If I could go the night before with 4 bags, no family in tow, that would be a brainer for me, but why on earth would I take the whole family to check-in the night before? Seems a trick is missed there. And why can BA say only one person is needed and VS don’t?? Anyone know?

    • Robin says:

      Try Airportr

      • Alexander says:

ex-MAN so no good but thanks. Still, it’s a free service that VS offer and mandating all passengers need to be present seems daft.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

If you checked the airportr website you’d see that VS aren’t alone with this requirement, AA and SQ also have it too.

  • Ross says:

For NON UK, some may find the following helpful.

Day 1 flying Muscat to Bahrain on Oman Air.
Day 2 Flight Departs Bahrain at 0200 on BA

We wanted to stay airside, get a few hours sleep, and not have go through immigration, get our bags, and then a few hours later repeat the entire process.

Oman Air in Muscat checked our bags through to LHR, (from Oman Air to BA, on separate bookings) this solved a major headache.

At BAH, for some reason, despite having checked in online, we couldn’t get our Boarding Passes on our phones, or on the BA website. BA You First, BA local regional helpfesk all were unhelpful.
BAH Transfer desk were useless and weren’t interested in anyone other than Gulf Air.

We managed to get through Transfer security check without a boarding pass. Checked into the airport hotel and got some kip.

Right next to the airport hotel is another Transfer desk, they were much more helpful! Printed the boarding passes and also made sure our luggage was on board.

    All good in the end!

Hope this helps someone as phoning up BA and asking them these questions (on You First and a local call centre) resulted in no advice at all.

I usually finish packing 5 minutes before I need to leave for the airport…

    • Londonsteve says:

Me too. I find this is when I’m most ‘efficient’ and up to the task. It does make for some stressful departures however when there’s a taxi booked, or I’m aiming to catch a train first.

    • David says:

Wow. I usually have the case out week before and put in things in slowly (especially the stuff you usually forget).

      • MARGARET SEWELL says:

And then add the stuff you don’t need .. because you have time to reconsider …..

  • Ayten says:

…and if you check your bags in overnight and your flight is cancelled the next morning – like today’s Heathrow disaster- what then? I’m so glad I didn’t use this for my 6:30 morning flight today as WITH my bags I was able to rebook on another service from an alternative airport

    • MARGARET SEWELL says:

You find a lovely customer services manager at check in who takes you airside to reclaim your bags … which is what we did when we arrived from the hotel for our 6am check in , had bags taken and checked in , given boarding passes ( which we didn’t pay much attention to ) it wasn’t until we got to fast track security and passes wouldn’t scan it was pointed out that the flight was cancelled ( December storms) and the boarding passes were for a rebooked flight the next day ……. The agent at check in hadn’t bothered to mention it …….you have to love BA , although they were subsequently brilliant on compensation and rebooked without ys asking us so …..
