Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

What are the 2025 and 2026 peak and off-peak Avios flight dates?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

What are the peak and off-peak dates for redeeming Avios points?  This article looks at the British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus peak and off-peak Avios calendars for 2025 and, for BA, 2026.

Remember that these calendars apply to the operating airline and not to where you book your flight.  An Iberia flight uses the Iberia calendar even if you book it via ba.com instead of iberia.com.

(You shouldn’t do this, by the way, because taxes can be higher if you book Iberia long-haul flights on ba.com instead of iberia.com.)

Avios peak and offpeak flight dates

What if I am booking a partner such as Cathay Pacific?

You should remember that partner airlines are charged at peak rates at all times when booked via British Airways. This applies to American Airlines, Cathay Pacific etc.

The exceptions are Qatar Airways and Finnair, both of which use Avios as their reward currency. These airlines set their own reward pricing which is identical whether you book on the BA, Iberia, Qatar Airways or Finnair websites. (Taxes, note, are not identical so it can be worth shopping around.)

Importantly, you may find reward flights on oneworld airline partners (except for Qatar Airways and Finnair) are cheaper in Avios if booked via the Qatar Airways or Finnair websites. The problem is that online booking is not available for all partner airlines via Qatar Airways or Finnair which makes comparisons difficult.

Where do the Avios peak and off-peak calendars differ?

I have published the calendars below.  You will note that there are substantial differences between them. Especially when travelling during school holidays on a route served by both by BA and Iberia or Aer Lingus, it may well be cheaper to book away from British Airways.

Aer Lingus is always peak over Christmas, New Year, Easter and the Summer. It is always off-peak at other dates.

British Airways is far more granular with most months seeing a mix of peak and off-peak dates.

There are different peak periods around school holidays. UK bank holidays and half terms tend not to be peak on the Iberia and Aer Lingus calendars.

Of course …. you can only benefit from this if Iberia or Aer Lingus flies to your chosen destination, and you are happy transiting via Madrid or Dublin. Aer Lingus has direct flights from Manchester to New York, Orlando and Barbados and these provide some opportunities to save Avios on flights to the US and Caribbean. Our review flying Aer Lingus from Manchester to Barbados is here.

It is now possible to use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher if you fly with Iberia or Aer Lingus.

  • Andy says:

Thank you Rhys, very useful. I would appreciate some help with clarification please. When I book an IB redemption flight on IB do I first need an IB frequent flyer account of some sort or would my BAEC number be sufficient? TIA

    • Rhys says:

Should be possible via BAEC on ba.com BUT it’s worth making an Iberia account anyway as there is a 90-day moratorium before you can use the ‘combine my Avios’ function which you may want to in the future!

    • Rob says:

If you’re booking via the Iberia website (because the taxes can be lower) you need to open an Iberia Plus account and transfer Avios across.

However, Iberia doesn’t allow transfers for 90 days and you also need to ‘earn’ 1 Avios in the Iberia account (Amex MR transfer is easiest way).

  • jjoohhnn says:

Interesting that Aer Lingus appear to have been flying on the 29th February this year where as BA and Iberia were not!!

  • JaneDoe says:

do we know when the winter schedule ends in 2026? Just looking at some flights that only operate in winter.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

It is always the same Sunday as the weekend the clocks change,

  • Peter says:

Rhys thanks for this, will you be able to share as an .ICS file so it can be imported into iCal etc?
    Thanks

  • Michelle says:

The Friday before the Early May Bank Holiday has historically been off peak but looks like it’s peak for 2026 which is just the day I was planning to fly to Rio once flights are released- typical!

    • Gordon says:

Talking of Rio, I’ve just had to cancel my redemption flights LHR-GIG for 2 weeks time, not sure if they will go back into the system?

  • NorthernLass says:

Odd to have every Fri/Sat/Sun in Sep as peak, hope they’re not going to extend that to all the other months …!

    • NorthernLass says:

Also the off-peak Tuesdays in August seem to have gone now, which is (more) bad news for anyone with school-age kids.

      • David says:

Yes not great but saving on a 241 is marginal. Issue is if your using BCs upgrade voucher.

  • Paddy says:

I want to use a companion voucher to fly from Belfast to New York via London and then come back from Boston. I know that’s an open-jaw trip. Can I do that online or do I have to phone the BA call centre about it? Thanks.

  • Ben says:

Is there any logic to when Aer Lingus release award availability? I’ve been looking at the MAN-NYC route and never seem to find availability.
