How can you earn Avios points for free?

It’s certainly an attractive idea – picking up free Avios which you can use for flights, hotels or car hire, or even wine!

However, don’t be fooled. Not all ways of collecting Avios are really ‘free’ as we will explain.

How can you earn free Avios points?

There are many ways of collecting Avios points. If you read Head for Points every day (or, at the very least, subscribe to our free weekly newsletter – click here to sign up), we’ll ensure that you find out about the best new offers for earning free Avios.

Here are some of the most popular ways of collecting ‘free’ Avios:

Credit card sign-up bonuses are a great way of earning free Avios:

You can also buy Avios points, although this is rarely worthwhile at full price unless you are buying the last few you need for a redemption. It is a different story if a substantial bonus is offered.

How can you pick up free Avios from a credit card sign-up bonus?

The quickest way to earn a large pile of free Avios points is via credit card sign-up bonuses.

It is easy to earn 20,000 Avios or more from each card you obtain.  American Express Gold is FREE for the first year and gets you 20,000 Avios points for signing up and spending £3,000, for example:

You don’t earn Avios directly from American Express Preferred Rewards Gold and The Platinum Card. Instead, you earn American Express Membership Rewards points which convert 1:1 into Avios, or indeed Virgin Flying Club and many other schemes.

How can you earn free Avios points?

Are Avios really ‘free’, however?

It’s important to remember that you are often ‘paying’ for Avios – by giving up a cash alternative – without realising it.

There are three ways of obtaining Avios which are genuinely free:

  • you fly with British Airways or a partner airline
  • you receive a sign-up bonus for taking out a new credit card, such as the ones I highlighted above
  • you receive points from a product or service you would pay for anyway, and there is no alternative pseudo-cash reward

That’s about it. Most of the other Avios you earn which are not from flying or from credit card sign-up bonuses are, if we’re honest, not free.

After all ….

  • if you convert Nectar points into Avios instead of using them at Sainsburys, you are losing out on 0.8p of free shopping for every Avios you receive
How can you earn free Avios points?
  • if you convert Heathrow Rewards points to Avios points, you are losing out on 1p of Heathrow shopping voucher or 2p of Heathrow parking voucher for every Avios you earn
  • if you convert BPme points to Avios instead of getting a discount on your next fuel purchase, you ar losing out on 0.8p of free petrol for every Avios you receive
  • if you convert Capital on Tap points from their free Visa card (Capital on Tap review here) to Avios, you are giving up the alternative of 1p cashback – albeit there would be tax issues if you took the cash as this is a small business credit card
  • if you convert American Express Membership Rewards points to Avios points, you are giving up 0.45p of American Express statement credit or 0.5p of gift card redemptions per point, or points in various other airline or hotel programmes

There are other occasions where you may have to pay to take part in a deal purely to earn points. For example, Barclays Avios Rewards charges you a £12 monthly fee to receive 1,500 Avios in return – plus a British Airways upgrade voucher every 12 months.

Conclusion

There are many ways of earning free Avios points, which can help you get your next free flight more quickly.

To get serious amounts of free Avios, you will need to sign-up for credit cards which offer generous Avios sign-up bonuses, or other points which convert to Avios.

Apart from earning Avios from flights or card bonuses, however, most ways of earning Avios are not ‘free’ because you are giving up some other potential reward in return. The smart Avios collector looks at the alternatives and only takes Avios when they are certain it is the best reward going for a particular transaction.

  • Jon Roberts says:

I still think the most “free” avios is getting them via Qatar as a “free” addition to points with Accor stays – no catch, as most of you know

  • AJA says:

Those of you lucky enough to travel on tickets paid for by your employers are the ones who receive Avios for free.

If you are personally responsible for paying the fare then the Avios you earn are factored into the cost of the ticket. Same thing with Nectar Points or Tesco Clubcard points. You are paying for the privelege. But if you would buy from that airline or supermarket anyway then you should really sign up to the loyalty scheme as the price won’t be reduced if you don’t.

Even receiving Avios for completing surveys means giving up your time in exchange.

    • BJ says:

Some employers including my former one requested we book through a corporate agent. Miles and points were for the benefit of the mist senior staff. It wasn’t enforced though so few of us bothered.

      • flyforfun says:

Our corporate travel agent usually shows prices for hotels with or without hotel loyalty points. The same for “free” breakfast. It has prices that don’t attract audit so usually there is a sweet spot for with loyalty points and we can charge breakfast to our regular expenses, of which breakfast has it’s own carved out amount away from the daily total.

If I’m buying for my personal travel, then I think twice about hotel loyalty points and see if I need them to keep some orphan miles alive.

        • BJ says:

I’ve noticed on the IHG app that they are claiming the breakfast at UK HIX are “free” again. I wonder how long that will last this time.

  • Desmond says:

Regarding China Southern offering Avios, I flew 8 sectors with them last year. While I managed to get my BA number in the booking, I never got any Avios points, I did put in a claim, but nothing happened. I am again flying to Oz next month with China Southern, I would love to get some Avios, but not holding out much hope.

  • Erico1875 says:

In the days when Tesco were giving 1000 club card points( 2400 Avios) for a £5 bottle of Finest Cava, They really were free 😁

  • Susie says:

I don’t think you mentioned a source of Avios which are truly free and from which I earn many thousands a year just from buying things i would buy anyway – use the click through from the Avios app to hundreds of different retailers, from Screwfix and b&q through booking.com and hotels.com
    to Harvey Nicks and Selfridges!

    • Bea says:

I agree. This is a great way of earning free avíos sometimes double avíos. The ones you earn by paying with a linked credit card plus the additional avíos for using the app. I don’t understand where the benefit for the retailer is though.

  • Baggins Surrey says:

I earn loads by buying through BA shopping portal. I generally find there’s no difference in price than if I purchased direct but sometimes same item has different Avios return with different retailers. In the run up to Christmas there was 50% bonus Avios with all of my purchases. My husband seems to have difficulty remembering to do this, so he can sit down the back if he doesn’t get his act together.

  • Simon says:

Have you had any issues recently, it used to be like clockwork now I am having to chase them for every shop!

    • Barrel for Scraping says:

Oddly it’s been the opposite for me. A couple of years ago it was unreliable, now it’s pretty good. Because of the way these sites track signups I have a separate browser I don’t use for anything else to use as my BA shopping browser. On this I make sure all cookies are allowed and any built in ‘tracking protection’ is disabled.

      • Joecooljoe says:

It works well for me, remember you have to complete order on site not on app.

        • Simon says:

          👍🏻

I have been using it a while without issue, My last four shops have not been honoured (despite the site showing them tracked!)

  • Simon says:

Not sure why people are giving such focus to the “opportunity cost” of earning Avios! The Avios are still free even if you would have been better off focusing your spend elsewhere!
