StatusMatcher – what tier matches can you get from your existing airline and hotel status cards?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A ‘status match’ is when you approach an airline or hotel company with proof of your high status with a competing airline or hotel group. You then ask to be immediately upgraded to the equivalent level with that company.

This is not unreasonable since it encourages customers to switch brands. People would otherwise be unwilling to give up their status benefits with the other group by starting from scratch with the new company.

We’ve had a lot of coverage of ‘status matches’ on HfP in recent months. You should keep an eye on HfP to be notified about these offers as they come and go.

The craziest one is Radisson’s offer of top tier VIP status to virtually everyone (a status which leads to suite upgrades at most hotels), the latest one is Flying Blue’s attempt to poach British Airways customers and most interesting was Royal Jordanian’s offer (now closed) of BA Silver status equivalent if you had top tier hotel status.

Whilst these are organised, well funded and well promoted status matches, many other airlines and hotel chains will offer the same if approached ad-hoc.

Many other airlines and hotel groups offer UNOFFICIAL status matches.  You won’t find the details on their website, but they will do it if you ask. Marriott has run a Platinum Elite challenge in the past for example – it is how I first got my Bonvoy (well, Marriott Rewards as was) top tier status.

statusmatcher.com is a site which I think HfP readers should know about, as it does offer a useful service to regular travellers.  I have no idea who runs it or where it is based, but it has been around since 2007 and has a lot of contributors.

Some groups love giving status matches, others don’t. British Airways will almost never status match, unless your company signs a major deal with them or you have a relationship with an overseas office. That said, it did do an offer for US residents in 2024.

Virgin Atlantic, on the other hand, openly matches the airline status of anyone with a Premium or Upper Class flight booked – see here.

The Hilton status match has been running for many years. However I would wait until April to apply because it should flip forward a year by then and be offering status until March 2027.

The point of the StatusMatcher website is to provide a central point where people can report successful or failed status matches. It gives other readers a feel for who is worth approaching.

As statusmatcher.com has become more established, the data has become more reliable and more up to date.  You tend to need a decent level of feedback on any particular programme before you can ascertain a trend.

There is never a guarantee that a particular airline or hotel chain will match you even if it matched someone else.  On the other hand, if you have a number of flights booked with an airline then you might be successful where someone else failed.  Despite this, StatusMatcher does give you useful guidance and is worth adding to your arsenal of frequent flyer tools.

Rob, this is something I had been thinking about this week so I’m glad to see you’ve done this review today. I got Diamond Status with Hilton back some years ago on a status match from Best Western. That was around 15 years ago though.

  • John says:

I’m in the market for an onward match from RJ Gold Sparrow before August. Suggestions welcome!

    • John says:

They won’t match a previously matched status

      • Paul W says:

Last April I used earned BA Silver to match to Flying Blue Gold and last week have used the FB Gold to match to the RJ equivalent to BA Silver.

  • Andrew J says:

Any update from BA on confirming that soft landings will continue?

    • The Original Nick. says:

They’ll have to honour it surely!

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

This should have been one of the first and easiest clarifications they could have made.

They they haven’t really does show that they are getting rid of it.

      • Rob says:

They definitely continue for 25/26. What happens in April 26 is a different question.

The rumour mill is that this WILL be rolled back and they will continue, and BA will tell people this. Don’t count your chickens though.

        • Andrew J says:

That’s good that it’s confirmed as continuing for 25/26 at least.

          • Rob says:

It’s not official obviously. However, it would be unbelievably stupid not to say if it wasn’t happening given that people would have otherwise spend money to ensure they retained it.

        • Barrel for Scraping says:

They never said they were scrapping soft landings so how can they roll back something they never claimed was happening?

I thought there was a big announcement happening this week?

          • Rob says:

IB announcement delayed, allegedly. Have a think about what was going to happen when IB announced a scheme with spend targets around half those of BA ….

    • Tom says:

Yes I had a message from customer services confirming there was no change to that policy.
I think the less said about it the better until something changes.

  • Chris says:

Your comment about Hilton status match reminded me that mine is due to expire in Mar this year.
However, there is nothing on the website telling me that it will expire, and when I booked hotels for later this year, they acknowledged the Diamond status.
Can anyone tell me if Hitlon status match always reverts back to Gold in March? And if it does, does a hotel treat a booking made whilst diamond as a diamond status booking, or of the status when you turn up at the hotel????

    • Ryan says:

      My understanding is as below.

There is no notification it will expire other than the original w mail you would have received stating you had achieved Diamond Status until March 2025.

Yes, it will drop to Gold, and any stays after March 2025 will be treated as such.

    • E says:

It might drop lower than Gold depending on how many stays/nights/points you had last year. I recently had an email from Hilton saying I’ll drop from Diamond to Silver in March.

      • Red Flyer says:

Same here – I’m dropping Diamond to Silver as less than 10 stays in 2024. I booked hotel in May and they said it is status at time of stay and not when booked that applies.

    • Bath Rd boycotter says:

Data point – got lucky on a recent stay. Having entered the Gold/Diamond status challenge via BILT last year, my trial period ended on 31 Dec. As I had failed to complete the required 8 nights to retain Gold, I was demoted to my previous Silver status as of 1 Jan. During check-in at Heathrow T4 on 1 Jan, I was welcomed as a Gold and received a free upgrade (to a non-executive room, sadly) as well as a choice of bonus points or free breakfast. As I entered my room, the welcome screen had me as Silver, though the Gold breakfast benefit was still honoured throughout my stay. I suppose my demotion had not quite filtered through to check-in yet, or perhaps they had already locked in my upgrade and benefits on the previous day with my Gold status still active. Time difference to Hilton HQ may have worked in my favour well. However, I did only receive the 20% Silver bonus when points were credited a day or two later.

  • Nick P says:

    Here’s a relevant question:

Historically, those club members who were close to achieving a tier but ran out of time could upon request extend their collection year by 1–2 weeks.

So, the question would BA extend those who requested it this year [Old tp of course]?

  • blue_wolf says:

Any watch to status match into Eurostar? Doesn’t even appear on StatusMatcher.

  • Steph231 says:

As far as Hilton status match is concerned, I requested it last Tuesday from Marriott LP Platinum and got a positive answer today as Gold for 90 days and already extending to March 2027 if 8 nights are spent during the challenge period.

  • Simon says:

Presumably if I status match from BA Gold to Flying Blue my BA Gold status continues in parallel for the next year, assuming I have already passed 1500 points in the current year. Is that correct?
