Premier Inn launches a rare hotel cashback offer with American Express

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

We are used to seeing the major hotel brands launch cashback offers for American Express cardholders, but it is something that Premier Inn has never got involved with.

Indeed, getting any sort of discount or kickback on a Premier Inn booking is virtually impossible. They don’t appear on reward portals and you usually can’t book them via online travel agents such as Hotels.com which offer rewards.

The launch of a cashback offer is therefore worth noting, even though it isn’t hugely generous.

Premier Inn American Express cashback

If you are targeted for this deal, you will receive £20 cashback when you spend £120 at Premier Inn by 9th February. Some people are seeing a lower offer of £15.

I suspect that payment is taken immediately so you could book for a date after 9th February but I am not certain. Book at your own risk!

The rules are stricter than usual for hotel cashback deals:

  • you must book online, not ‘pay at hotel’
  • you must spend £120 in one transaction, not cumulatively
  • all 800 UK Premier Inn hotels are taking part, but those outside the UK are excluded

Here’s a tip – you can usually pre-pay for breakfast and/or dinner whilst booking. This may help you get to the £120, given that few Premier Inn hotels cost that much out of season. Here’s an example:

We haven’t covered Premier Inn much on HfP, but I DO rate them. Their consistency and their focus on getting the basics right (good bed, good shower) is exceptional in an industry where the name above the door is rarely a good guide to what you are going to get.

We have reviewed Premier Inn Heathrow Terminal 4 – click here – which is walkable from the terminal via the walkway.

Remember that you need to be targeted for this offer and click ‘Save to card’ in the Amex app or on the website before booking.

£15 when you spend £150 for me.

  • drdan says:

Booked 2 rooms yesterday within same booking, same night, same hotel, total basket was £122 for advance purchase stay in July and it triggered cash back.

  • Andy says:

£15 when you spend £150 for me. And yes, payment is taken immediately on rates where you choose to pay immediately… but not on flexible rates where you choose to pay on arrival.

  • Simon says:

I got the £15 for £150 spend here

  • PeterK says:

No offer on my Amex Membership Rewards but £15 off £150 on both BAPP cards.

  • Paul T says:

I had £15 off £150 on my Platinum Amex.
A few years ago I bought c £2000 of Whitbread shares to get free breakfasts. Saves loads of money. Me, my wife and two kids have two nights in a Premier Inn in February for £73. If the four of us went to a cafe twice it wouldn’t cost far off that.

    • flyforfun says:

Is the offer still available to shareholders?

There used to be a site somewhere that listed perks for shareholders – like how once BA shares got you 10% discount, sadly no longer available since the IAG creation. Does anyone know if a site showing the discounts still exists somewhere?

    • Gordon says:

2 children under the age of 16 eat free with each paying adult. You often see a family ramp up to the restaurant, 2 adults and 4 kids, eat breakfast and go home!

  • flyforfun says:

£20 off £120 for me on the free Amex Rewards card.

When/if I go back to having a BAPP card, can I keep this card? It seems to get better deals than the BA card!!

  • paul says:

Premier Inn have been my hotel of choice for years – great value with decent standards.

Bath Road for Heathrow is always my choice (you can get discount parking at hotels a few minutes walk away and even sneak on the free purple parking shuttle next door 😂)

But their breakfast has gone from £9.99 to £13.99 in 2 years and they’ve closed so many of their beefeater, brewers etc restaurants and replaced them with very poor limited food and drink menu choices.

They are starting to lose their appeal.

    • aseftel says:

If you’re staying a lot, worth noting that Whitbread shareholders get free breakfast at PI.

      • bojangles says:

but you need 64 of them (£2k ish)

        • paul says:

          I should take a look.

I have shares in Carnival (for Princess, P&O etc) and Royal Caribbean to trigger onboard credits.

At the peak of COVID you could get the required 100 shares in Carnival for under £700 – and with $250 OBC for every 14N cruise it is very lucrative (plus the shares have done very very well too)

        • Dave B says:

Does it cover 2 people for breakfast?

          • Tom says:

A family of 4 (because kids eat free). It’s a great perk! I use mine all the time.

    • The real Swiss Tony says:

A couple of years back they announced repurposing dining space as hotel rooms. (I assume a comprehensive refit was part of this….) But I guess the model has moved on over the last 30 years with food delivery companies presumably a popular option for many who are billeted somewhere like this for a few days, week in, week out….

    • Gordon says:

Indeed, they don’t ask for parking tickets anymore on boarding the bus, I am doing this on a return in a couple of weeks Bus Stop 30 T5!
