Premier Inn launches a rare hotel cashback offer with American Express

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

We are used to seeing the major hotel brands launch cashback offers for American Express cardholders, but it is something that Premier Inn has never got involved with.

Indeed, getting any sort of discount or kickback on a Premier Inn booking is virtually impossible. They don’t appear on reward portals and you usually can’t book them via online travel agents such as Hotels.com which offer rewards.

The launch of a cashback offer is therefore worth noting, even though it isn’t hugely generous.

Premier Inn American Express cashback

If you are targeted for this deal, you will receive £20 cashback when you spend £120 at Premier Inn by 9th February. Some people are seeing a lower offer of £15.

I suspect that payment is taken immediately so you could book for a date after 9th February but I am not certain. Book at your own risk!

The rules are stricter than usual for hotel cashback deals:

  • you must book online, not ‘pay at hotel’
  • you must spend £120 in one transaction, not cumulatively
  • all 800 UK Premier Inn hotels are taking part, but those outside the UK are excluded

Here’s a tip – you can usually pre-pay for breakfast and/or dinner whilst booking. This may help you get to the £120, given that few Premier Inn hotels cost that much out of season. Here’s an example:

We haven’t covered Premier Inn much on HfP, but I DO rate them. Their consistency and their focus on getting the basics right (good bed, good shower) is exceptional in an industry where the name above the door is rarely a good guide to what you are going to get.

We have reviewed Premier Inn Heathrow Terminal 4 – click here – which is walkable from the terminal via the walkway.

Remember that you need to be targeted for this offer and click ‘Save to card’ in the Amex app or on the website before booking.

Nothing on either of my Amex – BA PP and Gold – but a Tesco spend £60 get £5 back was on the Gold.

Gold Supp on Plat £150 get £15 back

  • Lumma says:

Although it doesn’t have a rewards programme, you can book Premier Inn on lastminute.com

It’s definitely cheaper booking direct, but it can be handy just to find out that they exist via their search

    • daveinitalia says:

They do seem to offer an unofficial set of benefits to those who stay a ridiculous amount of nights (presumably all booked direct through their site so they can be tracked). This was from someone who ends up staying over 100 nights last year at various ones around the UK. It won’t be ground shattering but things like upgrades to plus rooms, waiving early/late checkout fees and free cancellations I think is it.

  • BJ says:

Not surprised at all, Premier Inn rates have become a total joke and they’re occupancy is likely down as a result. Prices across most chains generally increased post-pandemic but I doubt any more aggressively than Premier Inn. Four specific hotels I used regularly pre-pandemic for comfortably under £50 are now rarely available for much under £100 and I’ve never found them on the £45 sales for dates I’ve checked. They’ve spiced up the beige and bland budget chain with red-hot rates.

    • Charles Martel says:

I paid £47 for a night at one of the Heathrow sites a few days ago, the rates must be linked to local demand as you’d expect.

      • BJ says:

Only places I use them is Oban, Fort William, Aviemore and sometimes Inverness. It is true that demand will be high as they are are best option in first two and rates are generally high in Jnverness anyway. Even so a general increase in rates from x2 up to as much as x4 for these hotels seems over the top to me. I’m not sure what’s happening with them in major cities but I cannot see me paying more for them than a Hampton or HIX.

        • Andrew. says:

In Oban and Fort William Premier Inn could probably build double the number of rooms they have and still be full every night. Aviemore desperately needs another branded hotel.

The Purple Palace closest to me is full most nights, in summer they have a waiting list. As I understand it, a new wing was built in partnership with BMW and is block booked by the company.

        • Littlefish says:

That explains Oban then. I’ve looked several times over the last two years and always seems £150+ even way out. Different market clearly.
One thing I find tricky with PI is the website doesn’t seem to offer rooms for 3 or 4 people, so useless for a family. I assume I’m doing something wrong as presumably they do have two bed rooms.

    • Andy says:

YMMV of course. I’ve got 2 nights in a Premier Plus room in zone 3 (Wimbledon) coming up for less than £100 in total.

  • Neil Preston says:

£15 from a £150 spend on my BAPP card.

  • bojangles says:

there was an offer on of free breakfast a little while ago.
    Bagged 3 nights + breakfast for £146

    • BJ says:

Checked Oban under that offer, over £90/might room only in January. Unbelievable, Oban must be the new in place or more likely Premier Inn is the only place in town people want to stay.

      • Andrew. says:

You have to ask yourself why you are booking the Premier Inn, when you could be booking Shona Spurtle’s boarding house?

        • BJ says:

Pre-pandemic both Oban and Fort William were easy enough to find at under £50 and regularly featured in the sales. I guess my issue is more how things have changed. Sure, we have to pay the going rate but it doesn’t mean we have to like it. In truth every decent sized town from Stirling North could probably sustain and benefit from at least two new decent sized chain hotels.

          • Colin MacKinnon says:

There’s a new “capsule hotel” in Oban – 8m2 rooms with no windows. £80-odd a night!

          • BJ says:

@Colin, is that the Pier Rooms place?

  • bojangles says:

forgot to add, it’s also on my BAPP
get a £15 statement credit when you make a single, eligible transaction of £150+ online at Premier Inn by 9/2/2025

  • Londoner 79 says:

Does anybody know if you are able to book two stays in one transaction to hit £120, or would they be charged as two transactions on your statement?

    • MattB says:

I don’t think you can book 2 seperate stays at the same time in a single booking.
