Viking is halving its Nectar points earning rate
Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission. See here for all partner links.
Office supplies group Viking has been a Nectar partner for many years, even as many (many, many) other companies have walked away.
It has clearly lost its enthusiasm for the programme, however.
From 1st January, the earn rate with Viking with halve from 2 Nectar points per £1 spent to 1 Nectar point.

I don’t how excited you are about getting 0.5p back for every £1 you spend, before VAT and delivery, but it’s not doing much for me.
We should give Viking full marks for spin, however. In the announcement of the cut to your rewards, it says:
At Viking, we’re committed to making your shopping experience as rewarding as possible. Based on your feedback, we’ve expanded our range of rewards!
It’s not clear which Viking customers asked for their Nectar rewards to be halved. It’s probably the same people who told Virgin Atlantic to get rid of the 12 guaranteed award seats on every flight and the same people who trialled BA’s ‘breakfast for lunch’ brunch service and encouraged them to roll it out. We need to root these people out and have a quiet word with them.
The ‘new customer’ bonus seems to be ending too
Viking is still running a Nectar bonus for new customers. However, the Nectar app implies that this will go away on 1st January at the same time as the reward rate is cut.
As you can see here, Viking is currently offering 1,000 bonus Nectar points with your first purchase of £29 + VAT after you add your Nectar number to your Viking account. This is worth an extra 625 Avios on your order.
If you’ve never used Viking it may be worth trialling them now whilst the new customer offer is still there.
As an office supplies group, Viking is an obvious place to pick up your next printer cartridge or similar. It also has a lot of ‘office use but usable domestically’ products, such as coffee capsules and bulk supplies of bottled water.
Don’t forget to link your Nectar account to your Viking account before ordering. The instructions are here.
