Some fairly random news in brief:

New American Express cashback deal with Mondrian hotels

A new cashback deal with Mondrian hotels has popped up on American Express cards.

Mondrian is offering £100 cashback when you spend £400 by 13th February.

The list of participating hotels is here. It’s an eclectic list of destinations – Doha, Los Angeles, Cannes, Ibiza, South Beach, Singapore, Bordeaux, Hong Kong, Mexico City and Seoul.

The Mondrian in New York has just been deflagged and taken over by Lore Group, owners of Sea Containers and 100 Shoreditch in London. The London site was deflagged and taken over by Virgin Hotels a few months ago.

Liverpool John Lennon has a Priority Pass restaurant

Liverpool John Lennon has a Priority Pass restaurant

Yesterday we published our updated list of airport restaurants where Priority Pass lounge card holders (excluding ones issued by American Express) can get an £18 food and drink credit.

We missed out Liverpool John Lennon. It seems Sable & Co joined the programme at some point with no fanfare. We have added it on to our master list.

Cathay Pacific to launch flights from Munich

If you are looking for a new Avios route to Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific has announced flights from Munich.

This is a brand new route for the airline. Flights will start in mid-June and operate four times per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). It will use a modern A350-900 aircraft.

Cathay is also relaunching flights to Brussels from August 2025. There will be four flights per week.

Virgin Wines advent calendar

Virgin Wines advent calendars reduced!

Back in October we covered the Virgin Wines advent calendars – containing beer, white wine, red wine or gin! – which could be ordered with Virgin Points.

If the idea caught your eye but you didn’t have any Virgin Points to spare, you may be interested to know that Virgin Wines has reduced the cash cost of the calendars.

Yes, OK, we’re already four days into the advent calendar, but you can either have a blow out on the first day or pace yourself and finish it for New Year rather than Christmas Day!

The beer and white wine ones have sold out but the remaining ones are:

Mixed Wine / Red Wine Advent Calendar – £69 + P&P

  • 24 x 187ml bottles
  • 1 x full size bottle for Christmas Day (or perhaps now New Years Eve!)

Gin Advent Calendar – £79 + P&P

  • 24 x 5cl bottles of gin

You can find out more on this page of the Virgin Wines website. You will earn 2 Virgin Points per £1 spent.

The calendars are also still available for Virgin Points via the Virgin Red app (15,500 points each) but with £20 off for cash it is a poorer deal to use points.

This is another Virgin wines site.
Presume it’s same wines just less inflated prices to give you points back.

  • Alex G says:

Was pleased to see a YouTuber recently pointing out that Scousers still call LPL Speke Airport. 😊

Made me wonder if Mancunians still refer to Ringway?

  • LittleNick says:

Good luck getting a J avios seat on CX, they very rarely release them to partners. Even short haul availability in J is quite limited

    • kevinchoi says:

I’ve always managed to redeem Long haul J on CX using Avios – just need to look around, especially around 3-6 months in advance rather than a year ahead

    • Occasional Ranter says:

Agreed there doesn’t seem to be much long haul availability at the moment with CX.

      • LittleNick says:

Nope, literally next to none on most routes. Can find economy seats but that’s not very aspirational, hardly any in PE either

  • Alex G says:

“Due to phenomenal demand, the MSE festive dozen cases are now sold out”

Now offering a £15 voucher which is redeemable against your first order of 12 bottles worth £83.88 or more.

    • Gordon says:

It was of no interest to me, but hopefully it was of use to others, it was obviously popular, especially the festive cases!
