Eurostar lets you bid for upgrades to Eurostar Plus

Eurostar is now offering you the chance to bid for an upgrade from Eurostar Standard to Eurostar Plus, which is the new name for Standard Premier.

I’m not sure when this was introduced, but I suspect it is new because it was included in an update to the Club Eurostar T&C released this week.

Full details are on the Eurostar website here.

Looking at the rules, this isn’t a deal which will automatically be available. It appears that Eurostar will be looking for trains with a number of unsold Eurostar Plus seats, and will email holders of Standard tickets ‘a few days’ before departure.

You will be directed to the webpage above where you will be able to access the bid page with your booking reference.

You enter the amount you would be willing to pay for a Eurostar Plus upgrade, and will receive ‘at least 24 hours notice’ if your bid is successful.

It isn’t clear what sort of bid would be required. At times, the cash difference between Standard and Plus can be very low at the original time of booking.

Eurostar Plus gets you the same larger seat as Eurostar Premier, just with a lower quality meal and no fast track or lounge access.

Arguably £40-£50 per person each way is a fair price to pay given the bigger seats and the meal, which comes with wine.

There are two bits of small print to note:

  • you don’t earn Club Eurostar points on the cost of the upgrade, only on the cost of your original ticket
  • if you choose to change your train after buying an upgrade, the cost of the upgrade is lost

If you travelling on Eurostar, remember that:

How to get Club Eurostar points and lounge access from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Club Eurostar does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Club Eurostar points by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 15:1 into Club Eurostar points.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, so you will get the equivalent of 1 Club Eurostar point for every £15 you spend.

American Express Platinum comes with a great Eurostar benefit – Eurostar lounge access!

You can enter any Eurostar lounge, irrespective of your ticket type, by showing The Platinum Card at the desk.  No guests are allowed but you can get entry for your partner by issuing them with a free supplementary Amex Platinum card on your account.

Does anybody know what happened to Eurostar’s announcement / email on 6th September:
“We’ll soon be launching a brand-new benefit for our Avantage, Carte Blanche and Etoile members. You’ll be able to upgrade your booking from Standard to Standard Premier (Eurostar Standard and Eurostar Plus from 4 November) one way, once per membership year, totally free for both cash and reward bookings. Voucher will appear in account on launch day”

  • Smid says:

Virgin Atlantic and Trains did a bidding system for upgrades.

I never saw a decent price for any of them.

  • Sim says:

I have my own Platinum Amex and a supplemental card on my wife’s account. Anyone know if I could give one to a guest to flash to get into the Eurostar lounge when travelling with me? Do Eurostar check that closely or care?

    • Rob says:

They do check, because they are very keen on throwing out Business Plats and personal Plats not issued in the UK / France / Netherlands / Belgium, which requires a detailed check of the back.

      • Steve Jones says:

Unless something has changed, NL issued Plats does not get lounge entry. Certainly were at STP and usually at BRU. No idea why – perhaps because NL plats get the Privium benefit (which is a serious saving)

        @rob are they now accepted?

        • Rob says:

Not heard anything specific, I just assumed they were given that French and Belgian ones are.

          • Steve Jones says:

No, they never have been. And they do check on the door. I asked E* and Amex why, but got nothing back.

    • SBIre says:

In both London and Paris they have always spotted my OH’s platinum card was issued in the US and refused entry

  • Zark says:

And they do ask to show ticket to compare name on ticket and on card

  • TheOtherN says:

Vueling sent a similar ‘bid to upgrade’ offer through a couple of days ago on a LGW-BCN flight. Between £10 and £30 (on a €40 flight!) to get a seat with extra legroom.

Is this the shape of things to come for squeezing every last penny out of low cost?

  • bobthebuilder says:

Happened to me. Couldn’t get in with my business platinum. I was surprised the attendant noticed the small “Business” print on the front of the card. Clearly they are looking.

  • kitten says:

This is weird. Is this to get anyone traveling on Eurostar for their business to buy up to Business Premier?

    • Steve Jones says:

@kitten. Presuming/ assuming Amex pay E* for the benefit, they have chosen not to do it for biz plats.

  • Richard says:

As one of those lucky people who like to pay to travel in a reasonable environment, the option to bid for upgrades just devalues the product for me. RC

    • Rob says:

Except that the difference is rarely more than £40 anyway, so some people may end up paying more than you did!

I suspect main users will be corporate travellers who can’t book Premium and use their own money.
