The Wine Flyer, the Avios-run wine retailer, has launched an interesting redemption offer.

You can get a 30% discount on the Avios price of its Essential Mixed Christmas Selection.

You can pay virtually the entire cost of the case with Avios. Only a tiny bit of cash is required on top!

The Wine Flyer Essential Christmas Selection 2024

What is in the Essential Christmas Selection?

The Essential Christmas Selection is a 12-bottle case which includes four whites, four reds and four sparkling wines.

You receive two bottles of each of the following:

  • Orbiel & Frères Chardonnay (2023, France)
  • Dea del Mare Prosecco DOC Spumante Extra Dry NV (Non-vintage, Italy)
  • Cool Mountain Sauvignon Blanc (2023, South Africa)
  • Kew Gardens Blanc De Cabernet Brut (2022, Moldova)
  • Cabalié (2023, France)
  • McPherson Full Fifteen (2021, Australia)

The case has been put together from some of the most popular bottles in The Wine Flyer’s cellar, including the best selling Cabalié red blend.

Redeeming Avios is good value

With this special offer, you can buy this case for 17,515 Avios plus £7.39.

This is a 30% discount on the standard Avios cost of 24,939 Avios plus £7.39.

The cash price for the case is £147.49, which is NOT reduced. This means that you are getting exactly 0.8p per Avios.

You won’t find a non-flying Avios redemption which gets you better value than this.

There is no specific end date to the offer, but when it’s gone its gone!

(This is a good time to remind you that all products sold are subject to availability, and that occasionally The Wine Flyer may have to substitute wines for another vintage or a different wine of at least equal value. However you will find out about the change before you place your order, as the current selection will be updated on their site. The Wine Flyer does not deliver to Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, The Isle of Man or BFPO addresses unfortunately. Delivery is £5.99.)

You can find out more about this offer, and order a case (or two!) with your Avios, on The Wine Flyer site here.

Most readers of this blog want to earn Avios to spend on flights, and we are looking for value of 1p per Avios or more.

If you pay cash for this wine, it will cost you an extra £140.10 (£147.49 – £7.39)

You will earn 3740 Avios using code WINTERWINE

You will save the 17515 Avios that you could have spent on the wine.

You will have an extra 21255 Avios in your BAEC account, for a cost of £140.10. You will essentially have bought Avios for 0.66p

All this is assuming you think the wine is worth the cash cost.

  • Barrel for Scraping says:

This is a poor offer. Most readers of this blog would only buy from the Wine Flyer due to the excellent Avios bonuses that are often running. When buying for cash you’re effectively buying Avios by paying slightly more for the case than it’s actually worth.

The case mentioned here seems to be about £20 over priced to me. If you take advantage of the current winter promotion you get 3000 bonus Avios and the usual 1 Avios per £5 spent which makes it worth buying assuming you value the wines around the £120 mark.

If you’re paying with Avios with this special offer 17515 Avios for a case for simplicity is worth £127.39 (so £120 Avios component plus the compulsory £7.39 paid in cash) that make the value you’re getting 0.68p/Avios which although not the worst use of Avios is well below the value we’d be aiming for. In a non-sponsored article Rob would probably say you’re insane if you consider this.

  • Rob D says:

I’m one of your readers who doesn’t fly regularly but has built up at lot of Avios, some of them from Wine Flyer. I decided to take advantage of the offer and I’m grateful for the post but they did add a further £5.99 for delivery but credited me with 35 Avios!

    • Alex G says:

Free delivery on orders over £100

      • Rob D says:

        Clearly not on that offer!

        • Rob says:

It would be weird if free delivery only kicks in on a £100 CASH spend. I can’t believe they deliberately planned it like that.

          • Rob D says:

It only offered standard delivery at £5.99…there was no option to select anything else. I’m not complaining because it’s an offer. So likely that the ‘computer’ only triggers free delivery with a cash spend?

          • Rob says:

We’ve now spoken to WF. Seems it is policy that you have to spend £100 in cash and NOT buy £100 of wine, however paid for. I have added a note about delivery to the article. Apologies for any confusion caused but we are innocent!

          • Charlie says:

They told me this on chat…
            “Thank you for contacting us.

We have recently reduced the qualifying spend required for free delivery by £25 from £125 down to £100, however this excludes the use of Avios to reduce the cost of your total basket, meaning that if your actual monetary spend is less than £100 then we will still charge a shipping fee.

We try to be as transparent as we can in regard to delivery fees and to that end we have recently introduced a cellar pass available to all for £19.99 or 3000 Avios. This covers an entire year of delivery with no minimum spend amounts,so potentially you could save £5.99 on every order. If you think you will be making a number of orders using Avios then this is definitely worth the investment.

Utilising Avios helps you purchase wine at great value and we are simply unable to then add free delivery, doing this would require us to amend the redemption rates to cover the extra costs and this is not what our customers want.

The shipping policy is explained in our FAQ section as we try to ensure as much information as possible is available to you online before placing the order.

I sincerely hope this resolves your query and please do contact us again if you have any other questions.”

  • Tom says:

Bit cheeky that they still charged the delivery fee…. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • Charlie says:

I went for it. Thanks for the heads up. I have enough Avios to spare some like this and using WINTERWINE as a promo code I earned 3035 Avios back. So for a net 14,480 Avios (plus £13.38 cash [£5.99 shipping and £7.39 cash contribution]) I have a these 12 bottles for a bit of fun.

If you believe the £147.49 price (obviously subjective) I make that £134.11 for my 14,480 Avios – or 0.93p per Avios.

    • Rob D says:

Thanks for adding this Charlie as they have retrospectively added the 3000 bonus Avios on to my account.

      • Charlie says:

        Nice. You’re welcome too.
As an FYI for everyone the points both deducted (17,515) and posted (3,035) immediately in BAEC and my delivery was next day, i.e. today.

  • Robin says:

Whilst not really to do with the pros & cons I will add that, due to a credit card order being declined then OK (VISA’s problem), the order moved to two. Emails to Cassie removed the spurious one with quick helpful customer service.

    • Barrel for Scraping says:

Although I sounded critical in my previous post (the prices are higher than usual so you need a good Avios offer to make it worthwhile) the customer service has been excellent when I needed to use them

  • Alison says:

I like WF Avios deals but not this one thanks v. much! Their service is super fast, product exceptionally well packaged. I’ve had some good South African and Spanish Red cases but recently the price and the composition of these cases has changed , downwards, presumably to hit a Xmas price point. However tempting the 4k or so avios per case I might sit it out till their next stock comes along.
