Aer Lingus to launch flights to Indianapolis

Airlines tend to make a song and dance about new routes. This is especially the case when a route represents the first flight from anywhere in Europe to a certain city.

And yet …. Aer Lingus quietly added flights from Dublin to Indianapolis to its website over the weekend without any promotional activity at all.

The route will launch on 3rd May.

Aer Lingus A321XLR business class

Flights will operate four days per week, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

It is scheduled to take 8hr 35mins outbound and 7hr 55mins inbound.

The route will use a brand new Airbus A321XLR, taking advantage of the extra range offered by this newly launched narrow body aircraft which comes with additional fuel tanks.

Indianapolis is the second new Aer Lingus A321XLR route to be announced following Nashville which we covered here although the aircraft will debut on Minneapolis in April.

Business class is pictured below and is the usual Aer Lingus configuration with alternating rows of one seat and two seats. Even if you are travelling with your partner, it’s quite cool if you both have a ‘throne’ solo seat to yourselves on opposite sides of the aisle.

It is likely that Aer Lingus will be receiving direct or indirect US subsidies to launch these flights. Apparently research has found that over 500 people per day are currently flying to Europe from the Indianapolis area, all of whom currently have to transit in the United States.

Delta Air Lines used to fly from Indianapolis to Paris but this was suspended during the pandemic and never relaunched.

Flights are bookable with Avios. You can see pricing on this page of the Aer Lingus website – it will be a Zone 5 service.

  • John says:

The fear of turbulence on these A321 puts me off. The 747 was the best, at least the 777 feel like big sturdy planes but A321 doesn’t especially over such a vast ocean with many spots of high turbulence

  • Nick says:

Turbulence is much less on an A321 than a 777 – if you’re at the back of a 77W you really get thrown around.

The reason for a quiet launch is that EI haven’t yet fully resolved their pilot issues, so it may not actually happen as planned.

  • Indy500 says:

At last, direct for the Indy 500! 😉

  • Sean M says:

since when is 100,000 on 150,000 purchase 80% bonus? Assume you’d get 270,000 and therefore be 0.43p?

  • G says:

More irrelevant, soulless and second rate US cities, yes, please more!!

    • zapato1060 says:

      Wow.

    • John says:

The flights are aimed at Americans

      • john says:

Although they will just be changing where they connect, so instead of flying IND to a.n.other US city to Europe, they will connect in DUB instead. Probably quicker and more direct to do that than fly to ORD, CLT or ATL though.

    • sammyj says:

I’d far rather travel to Indianapolis that New York, lovely part of the USA to visit.

  • Mikeact says:

If I can dig it out, and you are happy to start in Spain, then they are offering a Business fare of around €800+ return.

    • Mikeact says:

      Sorry, been flying all day.
Try this one AerLingus from Rome to NewYork around €800, return Business.
But it helps if you know your way around Matrix.

      • Rob says:

Tried to find that the other way but no joy – there are days but not many.

    • Rob says:

The changes were pulled. It’s a very weird story. Basically Aer Lingus claimed the new T&C were wrong – except they can’t have been, because the document uploaded had been professionally typset.

      • ADS says:

damn. i’m looking for a rewards cc for irish based family. the current EI card sounds poor – in terms of rewards / operation.
