EXCLUSIVE: British Airways cancels return to Kuala Lumpur with four weeks notice

British Airways was due to restart two routes to Asia this winter – Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Bangkok is going ahead, with flights starting on 28th October.

Kuala Lumpur, which was due to launch on 10th November, seems to have hit the buffers.

Earlier this afternoon the flights were showing as bookable:

…. but five minutes ago it changed to this:

British Airways drops Kuala Lumpur flights

No flights are available until 1st April 2025.

Cancelling a route with less than a months notice is clearly not great news for anyone. However, with oneworld partner Malaysia Airlines offering double-daily flights from Heathrow, it should be possible to get most people on a same-day alternative.

Our 2022 review of the Malaysia Airlines service in business class is here.

Qatar Airways is also likely to be an option due to BA’s joint venture agreement. In fact, it is possible that BA tries to push Qatar Airways as its preferred alternative.

Note that it will take BA a few days to hammer out a formal rebooking arrangement with Malaysian. If you call today you will be offered an indirect alternative.

Why have the flights been pulled?

British Airways told us:

We’re disappointed that we’ve had such to make further changes to our schedule as we continue to experience delays to the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce – particularly in relation to the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to our 787 aircraft.

We’ve taken this action because we do not believe the issue will be solved quickly, and we want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve for their travel plans. We’ve apologised to those affected and are able to offer the vast majority a flight the same day with British Airways or one of our partner airlines.

We continue to work closely with Rolls-Royce to ensure the company is aware of the impact its issues are having on our schedule and customers, and seek reassurance of a prompt and reliable solution.

In terms of ‘why KL?’, competition is probably part of it. Malaysia Airlines offers a decent product on the route which also allows flyers to earn Avios and British Airways Executive Club tier points.

BA’s shortage of A380 aircraft is also likely to be a factor. As we have covered, the fleet is proving very unreliable.

Kuala Lumpur was scheduled as a daily service on a Boeing 787-9, which was a heavy commitment in terms of aircraft. Pulling what was always going to be a low yield route is a relatively low cost way of building some resilience in the schedule.

Let’s hope the 1st April 2025 date is firm.

I have just rebooked onto QR from edi – was initially refused but then change was agreed – booked into U class though

  • pauline says:

I did ask for Penang as that is our ultimate destination but that was a definite no

  • Graham says:

I’m having a nightmare. Keep getting pushed to Indian call centre despite phoning on Silver Line, cut off after 50 minutes waiting whilst they tried to source a flight, now had to start the process all over again. Unbelievably bad service

    • Jenny says:

@Graham, have you tried the live chat link? I rebooked onto QR via the BA chat, gave the agent the BA codeshare flight numbers. I did have to select seats on the QR site myself, although our preferred seating was greyed out, I just selected 2 seats then went to QR’s live chat, they booked the ‘ couple’ seats we wanted and I immediately received the confirmation emails. Another story but seat selection was chargeable, with refund initiated for our original BA paid seat selection. Noted that all amendments showing correctly on both BA / QR apps.

      • MarkH says:

Great tip – just managed to get the chat agent to also move my seats to the E & F pair for both sectors

    • Jenny says:

@graham p.s…..in situations like this, I prefer conversations to be documented…you receive a transcript of the chat.

      • meta says:

You do realise that you have a screenshot option on your computer…

        • Jenny says:

          Yes.

        • Lady London says:

I do that preemptively as I go along (and print pre-emptively if chat machine being used doesn’t block it) if I am not sure I won’t be cut off, left to “hold” indefinitely while they check something if the particular agent finds smething difficult, or if I’ve no faith in receiving or getting the opportunity to click for a transcript.

Can be useful on weekends if you land an untrained call centre at Amazon too and they transfer you to a new agent every minute.

I destroy the screenshots or .pdf’s once (if) full transcript is received safely.

  • luke says:

Produced myself a spreadsheet of options last night and decided if I could get the right QR combo I’d do that rather than wait for MH. Rang this morning at 8am and got through to a great agent who sorted my QR connection.
Original booking was Avois (with solo Amex 241); the agent made some comment about there only being award availability the day before, which she’d have to switch me to first but then she’d immediately “commercially” override that to the original day. Sounds like an agent who knew how to get round “computer says no” – just fingers crossed the booking sticks (I’ve had my confirmation email!)
Thanks for all the helpful advice here!

  • Vik says:

I called within an hour of receiving the email on Oct 11 and got myself re-booked on business class Qatar, which I am delighted with – a nice upgrade for our honeymoon.
However, when flying to KL via Doha (BA2303->BA2308), our layover is only 50 mins. Is this something we should be concerned about? The BA lady said it won’t be an issue.

    • Jenny says:

@Vik ….I had the same thought so opted for the 1.25 layover but reading about it, appears 45 mins is minimum and doable…others on here not a first timer at Doha will probably reassure you. Also Hamad airport has a useful page on ‘ Transfers’ if you google it.
      Congrats-Happy Honeymoon!

      • Mark says:

Well, it’s not an issue until it is… If you miss the connection, Qatar will look after you but the next flight to KL isn’t until the following evening, though there is a Malaysia airlines morning departure. I’d prefer to allow for a longer connection (ideally at least a couple of hours) and, if time, grab a shower in the lounge. There are earlier Heathrow departures that allow that.

        • Lady London says:

Don’t worry deendng on how long till your flight you might find QR does some reschedulings anyway. 50min can be done in DOH and legal MCT but no lounge time

        • babyg_wc says:

QR can be OK at looking after QR.COM booked tickets, but ive found them less than great with BA tickets. When my BA.COM booked QR tickets have changed QR wont touch them. For example ive ended up with a 12 hour layout in DOHA because QR cancelled 1 of the 2 daily flights from LIS. But QR (or BA) wont help me move the 2nd flight DOH-AUH – hence mega layover..

    • ATP says:

We had a 50m conx at DOH on our way to SIN. Our LHR-DOH was delayed an hour but we still made the SIN flight. They had a buggy for us at the arrival gate so we sped through the airport. Think they do this for any conx pax in J tight for time.

  • Graham says:

I have hopefully now got replacement flights via Doha, Qatar to Doha and then BA to Heathrow, not ideal times but didn’t think I could be fussy! After an hour they were still saying no flights available as I was an Avious redemption (241). Pointed out Avios was irrelevant and I could see Qatar seats available, they argued were in the wrong class. Asked to speak to a Supervisor and after ages the agent came back and offered these. Have seats appearing in the App but no confirmation email yet so nervously waiting after they cancelled last ones!

    • Mark says:

They tried pushing me towards the 13:05 BA departure to Doha, connecting to the Qatar flight to KL (I also got a point blank refusal on a reroute to Penang). Not what I wanted (I have to work in the morning in any case) so will try again when the policies are finalised.

      • Lady London says:

Yes the majority revenue on any ticket goes to the airline who has the first flight on the ticket. This can explain some airline preferences in some situations 🙂

        • Mark says:

Given the cancellation of the other daily BA rotation to Doha as well, BA128 must be filling up fast 🙂

  • Numpty says:

rebooked using online chat, took 2 attempts though, 1st attempt the advisor seemed to be checking for other BA availability on the KL route until i told him it was cancelled.

2nd attempt was an immediate success, told them what QR flights i wanted and they booked it with no hassle.

  • Jackie says:

Many thanks to all those who suggested using “Chat Line’ we have now rebooked our 241 tickets with QR London (via Doha) to KL in business class. Did not have to wait too long & very helpful agent.
