British Airways was due to restart two routes to Asia this winter – Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Bangkok is going ahead, with flights starting on 28th October.

Kuala Lumpur, which was due to launch on 10th November, seems to have hit the buffers.

No flights are available until 1st April 2025.

Cancelling a route with less than a months notice is clearly not great news for anyone. However, with oneworld partner Malaysia Airlines offering double-daily flights from Heathrow, it should be possible to get most people on a same-day alternative.

Qatar Airways is also likely to be an option due to BA’s joint venture agreement. In fact, it is possible that BA tries to push Qatar Airways as its preferred alternative.

Note that it will take BA a few days to hammer out a formal rebooking arrangement with Malaysian. If you call today you will be offered an indirect alternative.

Why have the flights been pulled?

British Airways told us:

We’re disappointed that we’ve had such to make further changes to our schedule as we continue to experience delays to the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce – particularly in relation to the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to our 787 aircraft.

We’ve taken this action because we do not believe the issue will be solved quickly, and we want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve for their travel plans. We’ve apologised to those affected and are able to offer the vast majority a flight the same day with British Airways or one of our partner airlines. 

We continue to work closely with Rolls-Royce to ensure the company is aware of the impact its issues are having on our schedule and customers, and seek reassurance of a prompt and reliable solution.

In terms of ‘why KL?’, competition is probably part of it. Malaysia Airlines offers a decent product on the route which also allows flyers to earn Avios and British Airways Executive Club tier points.

BA’s shortage of A380 aircraft is also likely to be a factor. As we have covered, the fleet is proving very unreliable.

Kuala Lumpur was scheduled as a daily service on a Boeing 787-9, which was a heavy commitment in terms of aircraft. Pulling what was always going to be a low yield route is a relatively low cost way of building some resilience in the schedule.

Let’s hope the 1st April 2025 date is firm.

    I see they’re offering to fly from BKK, but I don’t see any BA flights from BKK… Am I missing something?
    (Just thinking there’s an opportunity to have a couple of nights in Bangkok for the price of the hotel room only)

      To LGW (not LHR as the guidance states), but only 3 times a week.

    At last – now rebooked on MH1 3 days earlier than we had planned to travel. Very efficient agent on the Gold line.

    At last – got a direct booking on Malaysian both ways. I couldn’t select my seats via BA but inputting the same details, I could select the seats via the Malaysian Airlines website. Effectively no choice on the way out (5th Jan) but plenty of options on the return flight.

    Successfully rebooked via SIN using online chat (because we’re WTP).
    Initial pushback on the KUL-SIN leg until I pointed them at the page on BA site.
    They were happy to change the time of the MH flight to earlier, to allow us time to do the free Singapore city tour.
    Had to refund seat selection cost for KUL-LHR, so I will need to book those again, and couldn’t confirm if luggage is included on the MH flight, or if I’d be able to claim the cost if it isn’t, but that’s not a massive concern.
    Certainly an easier conversation than when I tried on Monday.

    Flight booked in J to KUL and back from BKK. Do you think they’d let me change the return from BKK to SIN? I know it’s more than 300 miles but as they’re offering SIN for the KUL flights wondering if it will squeeze through.

    Can you insist on QR rather than BA or MH? Being told incorrectly this evening – as it’s a reward ticket and there is no reward availability in QR I can’t make that change

      @Robert – the rules don’t entitle you to pick and choose which flight you take. The various new options offered by BA easily comply with their obligations. Many suggested the QR option was a bit of a bonus because it came under standard guidelines so people could get themselves rebooked more quickly and on a preferred airline.

      Ring up and try again – you may be lucky. There doesn’t have to be reward seats available but having said that QR would have been my least favourite option.

    anyone got a refund yet? Requested for a refund after they announced the cancellation of the service, but yet to receive anything.

      Spent hours on chat & live. Owed nearly £3k & £136 appeared today after 10 working days… though the start of the 7-10 days appears to be shifting! Told the seat reservations weren’t refundable, I pointed them to their conditions & a new person said they would be. Wish I wasn’t booked with BA to Charlotte on Thursday!

    Is anyone still experiencing problems rebooking?

    I spent one hour on the phone yesterday trying to rebook my cancelled 2-4-1 ticket. I was told I could only book on a space available flight, as long as it was a direct flight LHR-KUL, and they could only look +/- 3 days of my original ticket.

    Numerous times I referred to the guidance online at BA.com but the agent had no idea.

    This was my 9th time contacting BA about this rebooking.. lost all patience.
