Qatar Airways (yes Qatar Airways, not British Airways) has launched a new ‘buy Avios’ bonus promotion. The link to buy is here.

Assuming that everyone has received the same offer, you will get a 50% bonus when you buy 42,000 Avios or more. There are lower bonuses for buying 3,000+ Avios.

This is a flash offer which only runs to 25th March.

You can buy on this page of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club website.

60% bonus when you buy Avios via Qatar Airways Privilege Club

The Avios can only be credited to a Qatar Airways Privilege Club account. You can move them into a British Airways Executive Club account by linking your BA and Qatar Airways accounts via the process here.

You can only buy if there has previously been ‘activity’ on your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account. Transferring in 1,000 points at 1:1 from American Express Membership Rewards would count and these transfers should be instant. Recent feedback from readers is that doing a transfer from British Airways to Qatar Airways may no longer work for ‘activating’ an account.

What does it cost?

At the top end, if you have a 50% bonus, you will pay 1.17p per Avios under this offer.

This is more expensive than the Finnair Plus promotion before Christmas. However, as that offer has now closed and was a one-off in terms of generosity, it isn’t really a comparator. This Qatar Airways deal is the best offer currently available.

The most you can buy is 250,000 Avios with (if you have a 50% bonus) a 125,000 bonus, for a total of 375,000 Avios for £4,375.

Based on my spreadsheet of the last 9 million Avios I redeemed, I got 1.23p of value – and this is based on very conservative valuations for the flights I booked. Only buy if you have a plan to use the Avios because you should never buy speculatively.

You can check pricing and buy on this page of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club website.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

@Rob perhaps an article summarising what things you need to have done with various avios using airlines – BA/IB/QR/AY – before you can start using them to buy miles would be useful at some point?

  • 1958 says:

I know that redemption is not guaranteed – but for those lucky enough to get a Business return to Sydney or Singapore (BA or Qatar), Avios are worth much more than 1.2p or even 1.5p, given current cash prices.

    • Rob says:

To be fair its not a no-brainer. Qatar redemptions are 180k return plus £700ish. 1.5p Avios valuation would put a price of £3500 on a ticket. You can get business class to Oz for far less than that, albeit not with Qatar quality.

      • Erico says:

Can you buy, say 45K and send them to BA and then 3x Boost these to make 180K to transfer back to Qatar.
Including the £700 cash that would cost a total of £2568. 1p value per Avios and a good price to OZ imo

      • CJD says:

So surely some of the value is Qatar’s service?

        • Rob says:

Yes, but you’re also trading off difficulty finding a 180k Avios seat.

  • Hilda M says:

Got great value last night booking QR DOH DXB in F for 21,000 & about 95 euros. Would I have paid the full price of 1,350 euros (2,100 return), probably not but cheapest direct was flydubai in J for around 750 euros.

    • Hilda M says:

Just double checked & see the flydubai one way direct is nearer 1,100 euros – the 750 was routing via AMM etc

      • Gerry says:

For a one-hour flight, do I need F? Probably not.

        • Hilda M says:

Only choice, Economy or First and it’s probably 10 years since I last flew Economy – domestic flight in Brazil and seats were so tight (and I’m large), I swore never again ! 😄

        • Lady London says:

For a 1 hour flight if you have kept track of Headforpoints articles and comments over the years, very eminently worth it actually.

          • Rob says:

Yes, a First ticket from Doha to Dubai is one of the great bargains in aviation for anyone happy to arrive 3 hours early to enjoy the astonishing lounge.

          • John says:

But still not worth anywhere close to €1350 or €1100 or even €750

          • Gerry says:

I just did regional QR F two weeks ago, actually.

The Al Safwa lounge was particularly disappointing – no showers were available so they offered to escort me to a J lounge for shower; couldn’t use any spa treatments as there were no therapists available at the spa; champagne was served in wine glasses because they ran out of champagne glasses… Shakshuka was a fried egg in some gloop (I generally find the food in Al Safwa overhyped).

To add to the misery, there was a last-minute swap from Q suites to an inferior product with no notice.

So all that I’m saying is let’s be realistic.

  • Karin H says:

So Avios Boost by 300% still best value? I’ll be needing a top up for Oz……

  • AndyC says:

Hi Rob – I have the option of renewing an Avios subscription via BA. It will be the third year of subscribing – at the ‘original’ price of around 0.89p per Avios – for the 200,000 annual maximum. Would you advise renewing for the third year, or, having subscribed for two years’ worth already, should I call it a day in case BA have one of their dreaded devaluations? I don’t have any specific travel plans at the moment.

    • Rob says:

I doubt you will lose money at 0.89p but you don’t say if you travel alone, use vouchers etc.

You can pick up a LOT of points over a 2 year cycle with selective cancelling of credit cards which may be more sensible if you have no immediate use for them.

  • Nic says:

Can someone assist please. I have an empty Qatar account so cannot see how much 132000 qatar Avios would cost for a flight I have planned

    Thanks in advance

  • Lynn says:

Thanks for the heads up on the 50% offer Rob. I was planning a Maldives trip in January 2026 anyway and buying additional Avios via Qatar and transferring my BA Avios into my Qatar account has allowed me to book Business Class returns for the equivalent of £4,500 including taxes for two which is basically half the cost of booking flights without using any Avios. Took a while to find the right flight times & transfer times but it was worth it! Thanks again.
