We’ve talked a lot about airline status matches recently. Many airlines have become a lot more aggressive in their attempts to poach the best customers of their rivals.

If you have elite status with any airline alliance, there is probably a route out there to get status with any other alliance.

However, what happens if you don’t have elite airline status to start with?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could use your HOTEL elite status to get elite airline status?

And wouldn’t it be even better if you could do this to get some limited status benefits with British Airways?

Now you can, for a period, albeit for a small fee.

You can apply here. But read on first.

Royal Jordanian status match

Royal Jordanian has been running an on/off status match from other airlines for a while.

It has now extended it to anyone with elite hotel status.

To take part, you must live in the UK or Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Netherlands, Oman, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey or the UAE.

The application form allows you to select other countries but you will be rejected if you select one which is not listed above.

Royal Jordanian is a BA partner in the oneworld alliance

British Airways will respect your newly minted Royal Jordanian status.

Royal Jordanian is a member of the oneworld alliance, alongside British Airways. If you have Silver Jay status with Royal Jordanian, which this match gets you, you will receive virtually all of the benefits of British Airways Bronze status when you fly with BA:

  • free seat selection within seven days of travel
  • use of Club World, Club Europe or oneworld equivalent business class check in desks, regardless of your flight class
  • priority boarding

The official ba.com page outlining the benefits of Bronze status is here.

Your Royal Jordanian status will also be valid when flying with the other oneworld carriers – Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, American Airlines, Qantas etc. Benefits at oneworld Ruby level vary by airline however – you may not get free seat selection with all carriers, for example.

Royal Jordanian Silver Jay card

Which hotel statuses is Royal Jordanian matching?

I have listed the status level you need to get Silver Jay status with Royal Jordanian, which is equivalent to British Airways Bronze:

  • Accor (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver)
  • Global Hotel Alliance (Titanium, Platinum, Gold)
  • Hilton (Diamond, Gold, Silver)
  • Hyatt (Globalist, Explorist, Discoverist)
  • IHG (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver)
  • Langham (Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Topaz)
  • Marriott (Ambassador, Titanium, Platinum, Gold, Silver)
  • Melia (Platinum, Gold, Silver)
  • Preferred Hotels (Titanium, Gold, Silver)
  • Radisson (VIP, Premium)
  • Shangri-La (Diamond, Gold, Jade)
  • Wyndham (Diamond, Platinum, Gold)

You can’t get lounge access via this match

Before I go on, you need to know that Royal Jordanian has different status tiers to British Airways. When I talk about ‘Silver’, you need to note which airline I am discussing.

Royal Club, the Royal Jordanian programme, has three elite levels:

  • Platinum Hawk is the same as British Airways Gold
  • Gold Sparrow is the same as British Airways Silver
  • Silver Jay is the same as British Airways Bronze

Royal Jordanian is not matching hotel status cards to Platinum Hawk or Gold Sparrow status. However high your hotel status, you will only get Silver Jay (BA Bronze equivalent). This gets you free seat selection on BA within seven days of travel.

Royal Jordanian status match

How long will my Royal Jordanian status last?

12 months.

Do I need to put my Royal Jordanian status in my British Airways bookings to get my benefits?

You will definitely need to put your Royal Jordanian number into future BA bookings to get free seat selection.

You would need to swap the frequent flyer number in your booking at check-in to earn Avios and tier points. You could also do it in the lounge if there was a BA ticket desk.

The easiest way is to use the ‘Manage My Booking’ function of another oneworld airline such as Royal Air Maroc – oddly, you can amend all aspects of a BA booking via other airline sites.

(ba.com has been deliberately hobbled by their IT team to stop you changing the frequent flyer number in a booking, although the call centre can do it. Other oneworld airlines are not so restrictive.)

The bottom line is that you need a boarding pass in your hand at the time of boarding which shows your BAEC number if you want to earn Avios and tier points, instead of Royal Jordanian miles and tier credit.

Frankly, for short haul flights which earn minimal tier points or Avios, you might as well put your Royal Jordanian number in your booking and leave it there. You’re not losing much.

Is there a fee for the status match?

Yes. There is a $49 application fee for Silver Jay status.

You should make a substantial saving on British Airways seat selection, which would be available for free from seven days before travel and for everyone on your booking – not just you.

How do I apply?

You will need to sign up for a Royal Jordanian account before applying for your match. There is a link on the status match site.

The terms state that your match will be processed within five business days.

The match is being processed by a third party, statusmatch.com, so you will see references to them whilst applying. Ensure you read the T&C to be sure that you have the correct status in order to make a match.

There is a special website for the status match which is here.

  • Tubbs says:

Has anyone actually got the 7 day seat selection to be recognised for an existing booking? I can see the RJ number against my booking but BA still shows seat selection at 24 hours. I know others have had to use live chat or make a call to select seats at 7 days, which is far from ideal.

    • sm says:

Wait until exactly 7 days before flight ( to the minute ) and as long as you’ve applied your RJ Number, you will be able to book seats seven days out. I did this recently even though my booking showed 24 hours. 👏🏻 no need to call or live chat.

  • No longer Entitled says:

BA operate 800-900 flights per day. I would be astounded if OLCI is completed by a human, let alone one with the time to check every seat reservation to see if they can find a reason to remove said reservation.

I suspect the greater risk is not being able to successfully make the amendments between check-in and departure.

    • No longer Entitled says:

This was supposed to be a response to Emile/Memesweeper/JDB on page 3.

Am I the only one who finds commenting on the mobile site often problematic? Page often seems to lose the link to the original comment that the “reply” was selected against.

    • JDB says:

Yes, much of it is done by actual real human beings! A lot of departure, arrival and flight planning processes are carried out by humans in BA’s IOC. The majority of flights will be short haul where seating is relatively simple whereas long haul with three or four class aircraft with upgrades, downgrades, families etc. requires more intervention.

  • Cuchlainn says:

My presumption is this status match will not allow me to reserve seats @ -7 days with EI / Aer Lingus ?

  • Liviu says:

Would this be valid for a reward / companion voucher reservation?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

      Yes

      • S879 says:

@Rob, please see my post below. It’s two down. Qatar are not allowing seat selection and saying I can’t do it as my status is blue with BA. When I said my RJ status would apply they have quite rudely said since the flight is with QR their terms of carriage apply! I am quite confused as to what to do. I have tried to put in RJ number via Air Maroc, Finn Air without luck.

        • Rob says:

If you can swap the FF number over (and the RAM site should do it, not sure about the Qatar site) then you’ll automatically get free seat selection. If Qatar won’t allow the number to be changed over then you’re stuck – unless you booked via BA, in which case ring BA.

          • S879 says:

Thanks Rob, are you able to select exit seats for free too on QR/BA with RJ Gold? On another thread someone mentioned that they were able to with BA, but when I tried with BA (for a different booking) they said OW Sapphire doesn’t allow exit seat selection until check in opens.

          • S879 says:

Also, will BA allow me to change the FF number given that I used Avios to book the flights (no 2 for 1)? I tried RAM, but it keeps giving some kind of error when I tray and save changes so will try my luck with BA.

          • JDB says:

@S879 – BA Silver and its OW equivalents don’t allow you to select exit row seats on long haul. I think this is fairly much the only exclusion and is clearly stated in the Silver benefits.

  • Trickster says:

I was able to take advantage of the Gold Sparrow offer, and have been able to book seats on an existing CW reward booking. A curious side effect of the RJ status being applied to my account is it now shows in MMB I have access to different lounges. For example Galleries First ahead of my long haul, and the lounge in Manchester for my domestic (ET) flight the day before. Whereas before it said Galleries Club and no lounge respectively.

Now, I know MMB is notoriously bad with displaying the correct lounge entitlement, and I don’t expect this to be honoured, but I thought I’d flag this and am interested in anyone’s thoughts on this.

    • Nige says:

I have just checked my MMB for flights in April LGW – CUN. We are flying WTP but it is showing we have access to the First Lounge at Gatwick 🤔

      • Nige says:

Sorry, should say I am a gold sparrow too.

      • Trickster says:

Nice to see it’s not just me then. Still don’t believe it though!

        • bungalow says:

Ditto! Galleries First on mine too, and I’m only flying LHR to Germany!!

          • Grant says:

haha yes my LGW are showing First Lounge but LHR are showing Galleries. In truth I won’t get into any when they scan that boarding pass 🙂

          • NorthernLass says:

IIRC this is a known glitch on BA bookings – there was some discussion either here or over on FT,

  • S879 says:

I booked a flight with QR to Sydney. Contacted them to add my RJ Gold Sparrow and they confirmed but it is still showing I can’t select ANY seats unless I pay! Qatar’s response is as follows:
As you have a redemption booking with BA and the status is blue, you won’t be able to select the seats free of charge with the RJ airline tier.

Is this correct? If yes, then I have completely wasted my money applying for this status match as almost all my flights are redemption ones. Could someone please confirm if what they have said is correct or not or share their own experience.

    • Yona says:

This is not correct. You can book a reward flight (that on obviously links to your BA account as it has to for the avios) and then use a different reward scheme.

Imagine how a CX gold member would then fare if she booked an avios reward in economy and was not allowed to use the lounge or select a seat.

  • direttore says:

This SOUNDS like the faff involved is beneficial for people with families who have flights already booked over the next 12 months.

    Have I got that right?

    I’m just me.
    Nothing currently booked.
So seems like a lot of faff to me for little benefit…

    • Rob says:

Obviously if you’re not planning a BA flight in the next 12 months for which you would like free seat selection, it doesn’t have a lot to offer!

    • Lumma says:

I’ve always felt that Ruby/Bronze is nice to have but I wouldn’t bend over backwards to achieve it. If you qualify for this and do a lot of hbo fares it’s a great deal in my opinion. £40ish to be able to choose seats, exit rows often still available at 7 days, priority boarding meaning you’ll rarely gave to gate check

  • Johnny says:

One thing to note which happened to me. Seat selection is 7 days from flight not from check in. Eg wait for the message 6 days or less for check in. Also when I changed my FF to RJ on Finnair, the booking drops off from my BA App and need to add it back in. I can confirm 7 days from flight, you can choose seat even exit row. Another advantage, boarding at Group 3 for economy instead of 4-9.

    • S879 says:

If Bronze can choose exit seat 7 days in advance, when can Gold member’s choose. BA added my RJ Gold Sparrow number, but it only allowed me to choose standard seats. They said I can choose exit when check-in opens.

      • Rob says:

Gold (BA Gold or indeed RJ Gold) get seat selection at time of booking.

        • A270 says:

Do you mean exit seat selection at the time of booking or just standard for Gold Sparrow on a BA flight?
