Hyatt ‘in talks to buy The Standard hotels’

According to a report on Bloomberg yesterday, Hyatt is close to a deal to buy boutique hotel operator Standard International.

Negotiations are “in advanced stages” according to sources quoted.

Founded by Andre Balazs, The Standard properties are generally aimed at a young, hip audience, sitting somewhere (in my view) between Marriott’s EDITION and W brands.

Hyatt 'in talks to buy The Standard hotels'

There aren’t many of them, but they are in places where you may want to be:

  • London (St Pancras)
  • Ibiza
  • New York (East Village)
  • New York (Meatpacking District)
  • Miami Beach
  • Bangkok
  • Maldives
  • Hua Hin
  • Melbourne

The pipeline for late 2024 and 2025 is:

  • Brussels
  • Dublin
  • Lisbon
  • Singapore

The Standard Downtown LA, the only one I have stayed at, did not re-open after the pandemic. The West Hollywood outpost of The Standard, which was the first in the chain, closed in 2021.

Standard International, the parent company, also owns two other small chains which I presume will be included in the deal:

  • Bunkhouse (12 sites in the US and Mexico)
  • The Peri Hotel (2 sites in Thailand)

Does Hyatt really need three extra brands? Perhaps not, but The Standard would be a flagship brand for the company. I suspect the Bunkhouse and The Peri Hotel brands would be rebranded or slotted in under the JdV brand.

I love staying at the St Pancras one before an early train

  • Gordon says:

It’s no secret that I’m a Hyatt fan. I’ve seen comments saying that their footprint is not big enough (I believe that is more to do with London) so with their purchase of the Apple leisure group, and this, (albeit only one in London) Hyatt is moving in the right direction, lets see what the future brings.

    • LittleNick says:

Agreed +1, whilst they may not need another brand, they could do with a larger footprint

    • BSI1978 says:

Echo most of this; good to see a few more options opening up in the North West, albeit from a modest base!

I’ve already got one of the Leeds properties booked for next year and I believe another hotel (brand tbc) is opening up in Edinburgh soon.

    • JDB says:

@Gordon – perhaps Hyatt is better (and in my view has always been better) precisely because it doesn’t have such a big footprint. Other groups have rushed to create new brands and sign up hotels at a prodigious rate but then leave the estate to fester, no proper management of the franchisees or quality control. Hyatt using its name above the door of most hotels vs all these nonsense brands that hide ownership is very significant.

      • TGLoyalty says:

IHG and Principal springs to mind. The hotels are slowly leaving and refurbishments actually taking place

      • Gordon says:

@JDB Totally agree, I’ve stayed at all their AI properties Ziva and Zilara in Mexico and the Caribbean for many years now, (AI is not for everyone, but the staff are phenomenal and should be paid a higher wage IMO, to stop them from hotel hopping for an increase of salary) after their acquisition of the Apple leisure group, including the properties under the AMR Banner like secrets, Zoetry, to name a couple, I have stayed at a couple of secrets resorts since the takeover, but it was to early to say what effect this has had on these properties. I don’t doubt they will flourish under Hyatt.

Hyatt’s price point can be a tad high,(But some redemption booking are a steal) as the saying goes you get what you pay for.
Talking about continuity of staff, I returned to Hyatt Ziva riviera Cancun last year, (I know you look down on Cancun and prefer Mexico @JDB,) because I could not praise the staff enough, including the management, sadly upon our arrival I found the majority of staff (including a couple of management) had moved on, what a disappointment, as I do like to engage with the staff.

  • @thirdpassport says:

‘The Manner’ opening in New York City soon is also part of Standard International.

Hyatt Privé is my favourite TA program and this could be great news for guests. Secret Agent is good too but not quite as mature.

  • MarkyB says:

The Bunkhouse group of hotels are an eclectic bunch. I have stayed in a few of them and always had great experiences.

  • AL says:

The Standard also have a sub-brand – The Standard X, which is either already open or opening in Melbourne. Personally, I’m a fan of The Standard (although they really need to sort their front desk check-out processes out as I’m forever emailing for a receipt and waiting days for one), and I think integrating in to Hyatt makes a lot of sense if they’re trying to increase their footprint in, say, London.
