News in brief:

An update on HSBC’s 25% Avios transfer bonus

As we covered last month, HSBC has launched its ‘roughly annual’ 25% bonus on conversions of HSBC Premier credit card points to Avios.

The offer runs from 3rd June to 17th July.

The 25% bonus has historically been added instantly, although the T&C say that it can take 14 days. We were a little surprised when readers reported that the bonus was not appearing straight away, but the rules did allow for this.

However, a couple of days ago the 25% bonus did start posting instantly for new transfers.

If you transfer points from HSBC to Avios today, you should get the bonus within minutes.

The big question is what happens to people who transferred between 3rd June and (roughly) 27th June? It is now beyond 14 days for those who jumped in early and no bonus has appeared.

The HSBC call centre has been less than useful, including telling some people that our article was untrue. This is despite the fact that the conversion is promoted via a pop-up in the app.

Hopefully HSBC and/or Avios can get this fixed quickly.

IHG is running a short European sale

IHG has launched a ‘Book Early and Save’ promotion covering its hotels in Europe.

This is a surprisingly long offer – it runs until 12th September and you can book for any date in the future.

The headline offer is 15% off Best Available Rate, albeit sale rates are non-refundable and non-cancellable. In reality, you are probably saving about 5% on the usual Advanced Purchase rate.

You can find out more on this special page of the IHG website.

Remember that you may also have been targetted for an IHG / American Express cashback offer. This is worth £75 back when you spend £300 at participating IHG hotels across Europe by 11th August. You can find out more here.

Also did a small test first because as we’re dealing with HSBC, it’s the only sensible approach. In my experience they are are the most inept of the big banks, and always have been. I wouldn’t be surprised if they used Post-Its for this and the first load blew out the window. I’ve landed complaint after complaint for their continually archaic and fallible systems. Having just transferred an ISA that took a good week over the already long quoted days and I had to ink and post in the form. Responses to my complaints can generally be summarised as “We acknowledge what you are saying, and we are not going to change. Case closed.”. And don’t bother with branches, they’re just telephone call centre number reading robots.
Lets give this another go then…

    Data points:
06/06/24 – transferred small test amount – no bonus
26/06/24 – transferred all points expiring at end of June as time was running out – No Bonus
01/07/24 – Read article above, transferred rest of points expiring September. Instant bonus.

    • Moonwards says:

Does it say somewhere when your HSBC points are expiring? I can’t see these details anywhere obvious.

      • Sam says:

Yes. There is a detailed guide in one of the recent hsbc threads

      • Steve says:

Sam is right, but my own experience has been very hit-n-miss. Recently got better, I had an email laying out what expires in next three months….but that was a first. If you don’t keep v good records, you can get stuck.

I transferred my full balance nearly a month ago and have had no bonus posted. I called HSBC Premier earlier and they were fully aware of the issue. They said they’ve been running another points / voucher promotion for non-Premier customers and it’s created a 5 day backlog. I don’t buy this, as the bonus points have always been added virtually instantly in the past, suggesting there isn’t any human involvement in the process of posting them.

It seemed to me that he was kicking the can along the road, but I’ll call back in a week if there’s been no movement.

    • Steve says:

Did same but call centre had no clue…perhaps because of weekend. Have logged the problem and let’s see what happens.

  • Kevin C says:

Using Hyatt points at Lindner hotels has done me well during the Euros as hotel rates have been high. I booked my son and friend into one and got around 6p per point. As an added bonus, the French team were staying there before their first match. They probably didn’t book on points though.

  • Lumma says:

The most maddening thing about HSBC is that you can no longer make cash deposits to First Direct accounts in their machines since FD switched their debit card to Mastercard and have to instead fill in a deposit form and queue up

    • John says:

Oh really, that was the only reason I was keeping my FD account (and I don’t even know which HSBC branches have human tellers any more, they’ve all been converted to machine only)

  • Robert says:

Where should the Avios appear after transferring from HSBC? I can see them outgoing on HSBC account, but in my BAEC account I only see ‘Am-Ex finance card’ from my BAPP?

  • Tony says:

Hello – I have just converted HSBC points to Avios.

    1) nothing posted “instantly” as described by a few people here. It’s been an hour so I assume it will take a while – but it’s not instant?

    2) Bonus points were not shown during the transfer. I received the following message on the HSBC screen:

    Airline: British Airways Executive Club
    Airline miles received: 99,000
    Reward points spent: 198,000

So i assume the 25% bonus will only show in my BAEC account when the points arrive?

    • Rob says:

All HSBC transfers, to all partners, are meant to be instant – and indeed are in my experience.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I made 3 transfers and all were instant have you refreshed your app ? Trying logging in and out of the website.

It won’t show on your transfer screen but rather show up in your Avios account.

  • Chris says:

Just called as I transferred a bunch of points on the 8th and whilst the standard transfer worked, but no bonus pointed turned up. Apparently there is a system (err human probably) error and the points should be credited by the 4th July.
We’ll see if that happens, felt like I was being kicked down the road to get me off the phone…

    • Rob says:

£100 compensation will be paid if you ask. They start at £20 but seem to have authority to go to £100 without supervisor approval. (So say other readers via email)
