Amex suspends applications for the British Airways Accelerating Business credit card (again)

In February 2023, the British Airways On Business website went down. Over a year later, it is still down.

Even by the standards of British Airways IT, this is quite an achievement.

If you’re not familiar with it, On Business is the other British Airways loyalty programme. Instead of rewarding flyers, it rewards your company when you travel.

Amex suspends applications for the British Airways Accelerating Business credit card

It is fundamentally the same as Avios in structure. You earn On Business points for every flight your company books. They can then be redeemed for flights or for upgrades.

You can collect both Avios and On Business points on the same flight. You collect Avios as a flyer and On Business Points as a company.

There is a credit card linked to British Airways On Business – the British Airways Accelerating Business credit card, reviewed here.

It’s not a bad product:

  • You receive an impressive bonus of 30,000 Avios when you spend £5,000 in your first three months
  • You earn 1.5 Avios for every £1 you spend
  • You earn 100% more On Business points for every £1 you spend with British Airways using the card.  For most small businesses, this means you will receive an extra 1 On Business points per £1, ie 2 per £1 spent vs the standard 1 point per £1 spent.

Unfortunately the problems with the British Airways On Business website mean that American Express has – yet again – withdrawn the Accelerating Business credit card to new applicants.

It was originally withdrawn in April 2023. However, with BA promising that On Business would be back up and running, Amex opened it up for new applications last November. Big mistake.

It’s not clear what is happening with On Business. A BA staffer swore in February 2024 that it would be back within a month. It’s also not clear why members have not been told what went on because it is their data that has been impacted.

  • Lady London says:

On Business was a great scheme. Useless if you wanted to use the points for travelling Business though, as insane uplift from Economy.

It worked for me even though I closed my account some time ago.

I am just wondering how is British Airways getting away with the scheme being down for so long, and saying nothing. You’d think they’d just wind the scheme up and make a settlement to everyone. Then start again if they still wish to have a business scheme in that segment.

Iberia and AA both have Business schemes also though and when I looked they did not have silly restrictions like having a VAT number which excluded a lot of genuine business activities.

    • CheshirePete says:

Didn’t OnBusiness show Iberia and AA branding when you logged in? I always assumed it was a tri scheme. But those have separate ones also?

    • Bagoly says:

And a way to get something back on an (ordinary Avios) redemption flight – the “taxes and fees” cash element generates (or at least did) OB points.
I finally worked out that to put the OB number on to a ticket as well as BAEC number, one needs to enter the OB999999999, including the OB (and not the login account number).
Outstations don’t seem to know how to add it at check-in, I’m not sure that it works when booking, but MMB seems reliable.

      • Rob says:

Yes, it’s bizarre that there are separate log in and account numbers. Making you add OB at the front just adds to the mess.

      • Return2sender says:

Ahhh thanks for this info. Couldn’t figure out why my OB number was being rejected on a booking.

    • Rob says:

Reward availability is also great as linked to certain buckets of seats.

  • Return2sender says:

Just tried adding my OB number in full to 2 separate Qatar Airways redemption bookings made and purchased with avios through ba.com. Error message is returned saying ‘sorry we are unable to add the membership number to this booking because no eligible airline is present in the itinerary’ So it appears that you don’t get anything for those ‘taxes and fees’ ex LHR.
