Tromsø will now become the most northernly destination on the British Airways network.

Tickets are now available for cash or Avios at ba.com.

British Airways launches flights to Tromso

Here are the details:

  • Flights will launch on 1st December
  • There will be two flights per week on Thursdays and Sundays
  • ba.com does not currently say which terminal will be used at Heathrow
  • Times vary but leave Heathrow around 8am and return from Tromsø around 2pm
  • The flight is blocked at 3 hrs 35 mins outbound and 3 hrs 45 mins inbound – bring a good book ….

To quote BA:

The Norwegian city is known as being one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis, thanks to its central position in the northern lights’ oval. With average winter temperatures ranging from 0°C to -5°C, the destination’s abundant snowfall also lends itself to winter activities including skiing, mountaineering and whale watching.

This winter wonderland, which is in the Arctic Circle, is also a popular destination for those who enjoy exploring Christmas markets. The city’s most picturesque market and its Christmas tree is located in the main square, Stortorget.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said: “Those who missed the northern lights in the UK need not worry! We are excited to welcome Tromsø to our route network – it is a growing winter leisure market thanks to its abundance of cold-weather activities and we’ll be the only premium carrier operating there from the UK. We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.”

What do flights cost with Avios?

In terms of Avios, you are looking at:

  • 29,000 Avios + £1 return in Euro Traveller
  • 51,500 Avios + £1 return in Club Europe

Other ‘cash and Avios’ combinations are available and the ‘£1’ option is usually not the most efficient choice. 20,000 Avios + £35 is a better deal in Euro Traveller, for example, unless you are using a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher.

If you are using a Barclays Upgrade Voucher from Barclays Premier or the Barclaycard Avios credit cards, you are forced to use the £1 option above. Club Europe would cost you 29,000 Avios (saving 22,000 Avios) + £1.

should work if you put in TOS and proceed too

    December in northern norway?

    • NorthernLass says:

You’ll probably need your big coat.

    • Geoff says:

It’s fine. Two/three jumpers, a big coat and a hat and you won’t feel cold at all

    • ThinkSquare says:

We went in February and it was warmer than at home. Prepare yourself for very short days though

      • Odd says:

Lived there for five years, and can attest the winter is very mild for its lattitude, given the gulf stream effect, but after the end of November, there is no sunlight , and just an hour or two of ‘twilight’ type light around noon.

  • sayling says:

“We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.”

And just outside the double TP BAH minimum requirements… 🙄

    • PeteM says:

You can stay for a week 🤩

      • NorthernLass says:

Or add a domestic connection plus extra hotel night. But we don’t know whether cash prices will make this even a desirable option.

        • MT says:

I had never thought if this, is it actually allowed! Can you for example do the full 5 nights hotel or car hire in the UK and then fly the international leg? If so it could work very well for me!

          • Rob says:

No, rules now say the car / hotel has to be inbetween the flights.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Thought it had to be between your first and last flight. So even a rental between LHR and domestic connection counted.

    • Lady London says:

I’d Open Jaw and come back from somewhere else. Or start somewhere else and come back from here.

    • L Allen says:

No reason why you can’t fly GLA-LCY, stay in London for 2 nights then do LHR-TOS-LHR for 3/4 nights all on the same holiday booking.

  • Anna says:

I tend to avoid cooler climes, and much prefer Mediterranean destinations, as an avid naturist, Norway is a bit chilly.

    • AndyGWP says:

Agreed – there’s no way I’d want to be naked in Norway in December!

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

        Perhaps a sauna?

        • NorthernLass says:

I’ve read they have saunas and then you run outside in the snow and hit yourself with birch twigs or something for the circulation 🤷‍♀️😂.
I’m far too inhibited for any of it though.

          • Colin MacKinnon says:

Might be fun to watch if it’s too cloudy for the Northern Lights!

  • Danny says:

Iberia will also launch Madrid to Tromsø. Might get 140TPs in business?

  • conspicuous-capybara says:

I’m always glad to see BA expand their Norwegian network, but surprised that Tromsø is ahead of Bergen and Stavanger (which they flew to for a number of years) in the pecking order.

HFP readers who haven’t been to coastal Northern Norway before might be surprised at how (relatively) mild Tromsø is, largely thanks to the Gulf stream. The average high/low temperatures in December are 1c/-4c respectively – certainly nothing as cold as interior northern Nordic tourist destinations like Lapland, where it’s -7/-14c and can often go down to below -20c, whereas Tromsø almost never see the mercury stoop below -10c.

    • Thaliasilje says:

You forget the wind which makes being outside a very unpleasant experience.

    • Peter says:

Never got above -15C when I was there in early March. Watching the northern lights outside of the town it was down to -27 and -20 when skiing during the day.

      • Odd says:

The mildness extends to the wind, unless you happen to be there during a storm, there is no drastic difference in the effect of wind, given that Tromso is an island separated from the open sea by many other islands. I would say during the winter temperatures are often around -10 to 0, while in Lapland it is usually 30 degrees colder. The general rule of thumb is that as you drive away from the coast, the temperature drops by a degree for every 10 km you drive, and the closest town in Finland is a bit over 300km away.

  • Davedent says:

Spent one Christmas / New Year there to be 100% I saw AB – never really got light averaged -20c. Not sure I will ever go back.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

You did see the the aurora though?

      • Odd says:

December is not a good time to go for the Aurora. Yes, since there is less sunlight you get more time to see it, but you are just as well off going in October or March when you can also avoid the polar night. Most tourist companies will still go ‘aurora hunting’ in the evenings anyway, so it doesnt matter that it’s pitch black at 2pm.

      • Davedent says:

Several times – snowmobiling was the best thing tho.

  • Tom says:

Exciting new destination. Booked for Feb half term. Win!
