Tickets are now available for cash or Avios at ba.com.

British Airways launches flights to Tromso

Here are the details:

  • Flights will launch on 1st December
  • There will be two flights per week on Thursdays and Sundays
  • ba.com does not currently say which terminal will be used at Heathrow
  • Times vary but leave Heathrow around 8am and return from Tromsø around 2pm
  • The flight is blocked at 3 hrs 35 mins outbound and 3 hrs 45 mins inbound – bring a good book ….

To quote BA:

The Norwegian city is known as being one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis, thanks to its central position in the northern lights’ oval. With average winter temperatures ranging from 0°C to -5°C, the destination’s abundant snowfall also lends itself to winter activities including skiing, mountaineering and whale watching.

This winter wonderland, which is in the Arctic Circle, is also a popular destination for those who enjoy exploring Christmas markets. The city’s most picturesque market and its Christmas tree is located in the main square, Stortorget.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said: “Those who missed the northern lights in the UK need not worry! We are excited to welcome Tromsø to our route network – it is a growing winter leisure market thanks to its abundance of cold-weather activities and we’ll be the only premium carrier operating there from the UK. We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.”

What do flights cost with Avios?

In terms of Avios, you are looking at:

  • 29,000 Avios + £1 return in Euro Traveller
  • 51,500 Avios + £1 return in Club Europe

Other ‘cash and Avios’ combinations are available and the ‘£1’ option is usually not the most efficient choice. 20,000 Avios + £35 is a better deal in Euro Traveller, for example, unless you are using a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher.

If you are using a Barclays Upgrade Voucher from Barclays Premier or the Barclaycard Avios credit cards, you are forced to use the £1 option above. Club Europe would cost you 29,000 Avios (saving 22,000 Avios) + £1.

  • DanATC says:

Grabbed the last two CE Avios seats for the weekend (Thurs – Sun) before Christmas – thanks HfP!

  • Paul says:

Flying from T5 at Heathrow. Just booked mine.

  • JdeW says:

At 3hrs 35 min, will this be an 80 TP flight?

    • L Allen says:

No, it’s only 1400 miles. I just looked it up as I was hoping the same!

      • Mark says:

Why wouldn’t it be? At 1408miles it’s longer than a number of well known 80TP routes (eg, HEL@1151, MLA@1282, OTP@1311)

The Avios Flight Calculator doesn’t “recognise that route and airline combination” when you try to find out.

    • Jonathan says:

It’s a flight I won’t be jumping at the chance to be booking, sat in a CE / ET seat for other best part of 4 hours

  • Paul says:

My cheapo economy Avios ticket says 10TP

  • TomB says:

BA website has been saying ‘error’ for days now when I try and find/search/book any reward flight seats. It’s not on Seat Spy etc either.
