easyJet to open a base at London Southend airport

easyJet has been one of the few rays of light at London Southend airport since the pandemic, as virtually the only airline to run any scheduled services.

Demand is obviously going well because, in a major boost for the airport, easyJet is to make London Southend its tenth UK base.

Three aircraft will be based at Southend from next summer, creating 130 jobs for pilots and crew and many more in support roles.

Six new routes will go on sale today for travel from 1st May 2025:

  • Pisa
  • Gran Canaria
  • Dalaman
  • Antalya
  • Marrakech
  • Enfidha

Existing routes, served by aircraft based elsewhere, are expected to continue:

  • Amsterdam
  • Geneva
  • Faro
  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Malaga
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle

If you’ve never travelled from Southend, it is exceptionally easy to reach from central London with direct trains from Liverpool Street and Stratford. The walk from the station to the terminal door is literally just a minute.

U2 currently runs a twice weekly service SEN-ALC

  • TimM says:

Excellent choice of new routes from Southend.

    • ChrisBCN says:

Huh? Why aren’t you complaining that it’s more London routes?

  • BJ says:

I’m very impressed with these refundable Accor sales. If they fit within hotel promotions or some other category at the next HfP awards I think they would be a very worthy nominee.

  • Gordon says:

There was an increase on take up from the regions that prompted EasyJet to form a base a SEN, having 3 aircraft there permanently, and creating 180 jobs, which can’t be a bad thing.

    • HampshireHog says:

I think it’s a stretch to describe London Southend as in the Regions

      • Gordon says:

It’s in the regions of, Hockley, Rochford, Rayleigh, Wickford, 😉

      • Chrisasaurus says:

I think it’s also a stretch to call Southend London but it’s true that this isn’t exactly Hull…

  • SamG says:

Hmm, in the case of Newark I think the press release was correct and nothing has changed recently- it used to be that you couldn’t access the buffet unless flying CW or F but now it’s open to all passengers. F passengers have a small separate table service area . So depends what we are calling “pre flight dining!”

  • Oh really says:

    Ref: pre flight dining

What is the correction? It’s not clear from the text above.

    • Rob says:

Silver in Economy isn’t getting in any longer.

      • LittleNick says:

Nor Gold in Club World it seems? Won’t even through a carrot to golds

      • SamG says:

A Silver in economy can access the old “sleeper service” buffet dining in e.g. Newark that they couldn’t access prior to 2021. So the correction isn’t (fully?) correct 🙂

  • Paul says:

In the past you needed to be in First for table service or in Club for the buffet. So a Gold in traveller plus could not access the buffet, and would be told they’d get their meal on board.

The change in 2021 allowed the gold in traveller plus to access the buffet, for example. I do not believe this has changed.

  • Paul says:

If HfP don’t understand the rules around BA pre flight dining then there sure as hell is no chance for the occasional flyer. Everything I read about BA simply reconfirms my decision in 2017 to avoid them whenever possible. I am proudly a Gold card holder (1505 tier points last year) and have not stepped foot on a BA long haul plane since April 2017. More importantly, I have not had cause to complain, or to seek redress via EU 261, indeed I cannot recall the last time a one world long haul flight has left late! My around the world in Dec/Jan involved 7 flights and every one left on time. BA was not in the mix.

I do fly ShortHaul on BA especially from T3 where again I can avoid the substandard lounge experience.

The T5 First wing is perhaps the only tangible benefit I place value on.

    • Catalan says:

@Paul. You seem to fly BA the least but are possibly their most vocal critic. The mere mention of that airline puts you into a rage. How so?

      • Peter K says:

And though he seems to hate BA, and criticises them at every possible opportunity, he still uses their frequent flyer program.

Clearly the other airlines he loves so much are not as good in this area, but he’s silent on this topic that I’ve noticed.
