An attractive eBay offer with Nectar looks a better deal than Avios

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Nectar and eBay have brought back their intriguing ‘rebate’ promotion. When I say ‘brought back’, we last covered this in 2015 although I’m sure it must have been re-run at some point in the last nine years.

Let me say upfront that this may be targetted. Look under ‘Partner Offers’ in the Nectar app to see if it is there.

Assuming you can see the offer and you register, if you cash in your Nectar points for eBay credit by 31st May, you will get a 50% rebate of the points back into your Nectar account.

Let’s look at how this works.

eBay 50% nectar rebate offer

Imagine you convert 5,000 Nectar points to eBay credit. You would usually receive a £25 eBay voucher – the usual 0.5p per point.

However, on this occasion, Nectar will refund you 50% of the points.  This means that you have only paid 2,500 points for your £25 of eBay credit.  That is 1p per Nectar point which is an excellent deal, and better than converting to Avios.

There are two restrictions to note:

  • the maximum rebate is 2,500 Nectar points – so the highest value voucher you can order is £25 for 5,000 Nectar points
  • you only get the rebate on the first voucher you order (the comments below say that you DO get ‘change’ from a partly used voucher, so ordering a large denomination is not a problem)
eBay 50% nectar rebate offer

It is NOT worth converting Avios into Nectar points at 1:1 to take advantage of this offer, even if you think 1p per Nectar point is a good deal. This is because you need to factor in what you do with the rebated points.  Take a look at this example:

  • imagine that you transfer 5,000 Avios into 5,000 Nectar points
  • and then spend 5,000 Nectar points on a £25 eBay voucher
  • you would get 2,500 Nectar points refunded to your Nectar account
  • which you could convert back to 1,500 Avios

You would have spent 3,500 Avios to get a £25 eBay voucher, which is not a great deal.

If you already have up to 5,000 Nectar points in your account then this is an excellent deal and you are genuinely getting 1p per point on however many you convert (max 5,000).

You need to link your Nectar and eBay accounts before you can do any of this, which you can do here. You can then register for the offer via the Nectar app, assuming you are targetted.

Pretty sure this is wrong: “it appears that you don’t get ‘change’ from Nectar vouchers and need to spend the full amount in one go”. I have a £50 voucher from January where I only used £13.99. I’ve just checked and there is still £36.01 available to use.

    • Rob says:

Thanks. Happy to be proved wrong – the T&C do not cover this.

  • Alex says:

I like how you said “need” to go to Birmingham and not “want”

    • TGLoyalty says:

If you want to go to Birmingham I wouldn’t recommend this hotel as it’s a pretty long walk from the centre and in a uni campus so not much about. The parking is also across a pretty busy 4 lane A road.

      Completely doable but not great.

The Delta is also out of the city but had parking on site and actually a better walk into the centre and puts you on the right side of the city for the Botanical gardens, Edgbaston and Harborne. Digbeth and Moseley are probably similar from both.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        To add

The Grand is the best hotel in the centre then I’d say Hotel du Vin then Park Regis (all have 0 points or loyalty angle). Malmaison is pretty boring and getting dated.

The Crowne Plaza is having a room refurbishment but the AC is probably still loud and imagine the walls are still thin unless they’re insulating as part of the refurb.

As an aside Hampton Manor has actually made themselves available via Hyatt MMS so thats a great choice for anyone looking to stay in the midlands.

        • Tom says:

          The Hyatt is decent too.

Grand is the only 5 star place though.

    • Can2 says:

      Isn’t that true?

  • jonathan says:

From a fair amount of experience in the past, I have been able to get change from these vouchers, if that helps. This seems a much better value redemption than a lot of Nectar options

  • JPK says:

Is there anything to do in Birmingham if we went for a weekend? Other than walk round city centre shops with the same chain stores as everywhere else, drink in Wetherspoons, and eat Wagamama or Nando’s?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Opheem is a two Michelin star restaurant.
Passing Fancies is a highly rated bar within the U.K. not just Birmingham.
Fox and Chance another great choice
Madeleine bar in the Grand another top choice

Plenty of great independent choices to eat and drink around Moseley, Edgbaston, Harborne, Strichley etc

Askbarney.co.uk is a great resource for finding amazing independent places to eat.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Pubs

The Trocadero, Head of Steam, Old Joint Stock, Lost & Found, Purecraft, The Colmore, Canal House, Hare & House

Try Medicine Bakery, Perch or Yorks for breakfast/brunch/coffee. bonehead, the Oyster Club, Laghi’s or Tiger Bites Pig for lunch or even Hockley Social Club for street food/beers.

Try a mixed grill at The Covered Wagon (amazing butter chicken too) or Copper Fox Grill or Soho Tavern (short/cheap train to Hampton in Arden and 10 mins walk), Hampton Manor similar but has some great restaurants inc Smoke any a pop up bakery on Sat/Sun too

I could go on but the answer is yes if you do even the slightest bit of research you’ll find and amazing city.

    • The real Swiss Tony says:

That probably sums it up. Maybe a bit harsh on the restaurant front as there are some good independent places, great curries etc.

There’s theatre, sport etc, but you’re probably not going to tack that sort of thing on – it’s likely the main driver. It’s also impossibly busy at the weekend, I think by virtue of the massive catchment area the city covers.

Stratford upon Avon is just down the road.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Every city centre has the same chain shops because frankly shopping in city centres is dead. It probably has all the same crazy golf, darts(flight club etc), cricket(sixes), axe throwing etc etc attractions too but that’s the new social fad hitting all cities and depending on where you live might be new or the same old crap.

It’s the local cuisine, pubs, bars, hospitality that differentiates every city now.

    • Harry T says:

      Drive back to civilisation.

      • Harry T says:

Partially joking. The Dishoom there was pretty good, the Edinburgh one has a better ambience though.

        • TGLoyalty says:

The bar downstairs is certainly busier but the food is far better. A top brunch spot and don’t forget to order the masala beans.

    • paul says:

IF you can plan ahead you might be able to get a reservation at Birmingham Food College – an excellent dining experience not too many know about (or can get a reservation for).

Great science museum, more canals than Venice, tram service just to say you’ve done it lol, history tours (back to back houses, the coffin works), HoHo bus, 3 arena music venues, lots of local music, 3 theatres, countless sporting venues…

  • Ren16 says:

Just tried to get into my Nectar card online account to find it locked for some reason. Used the chat function and gave over lots of information multiple times to eventually be told that unless I could tell the agent exactly when I started the Nectar account there was nothing she could do. Who would even keep tabs on that information, especially when the account was started donkeys years ago?

  • TooPoorToBeHere says:

Ebay Nectar vouchers are definitely redeemable in part – I use this heavily/frequently.

  • memesweeper says:

1 Amex MR = 1 Nectar … so if you need to top up Nectar to get a full size £25 voucher this is a reasonable deal (better than Avios). I think?

    • Rob says:

As a top up yes, but not to fund 100% of the redemption – because when you get the 50% rebate what are you doing with them? You are locked in to a low value Nectar redemption.

  • Matt H says:

How long does it take for the nectar rebate to reappear back in my account? Thanks

    • Stephen says:

Anyone got experience of this yet? Is it immediate or do you have to wait to end of promo?
