British Airways launches a status match – but only for US and Canadian residents

Well, after years of telling people that British Airways never does status matches, British Airways has launched a status match.

The bad news for the 90% of HfP readers who outside North America is that you don’t qualify. You must have a US or Canadian address to take part.

There is no fee to apply.

How does the British Airways status match work?

British Airways will match your status with seven airlines, as per the table below:

AirlineGets you BA Silver:Gets you BA Gold:
DeltaGoldPlatinum
Air Canada50K75K and Super Elite
LufthansaSenatorHon Circle
United AirlinesPremier GoldPremier Platinum, Premier 1k
Air France / KLMGoldPlatinum
Scandinavian AirlinesGoldDiamond, Pandion
Virgin AtlanticSilverGold

How long do you keep your British Airways status?

Six months, unless …..

How can you keep your status for longer?

You will receive your status for the usual period of time (eg until 31st March 2025, with a card expiry date of 30th April 2025) if you take two qualifying one-way transatlantic flights – so one return flight – within six months.

To qualify, these flights must:

  • be a British Airways-marketed flight in business (Club World) or First
  • be operated by British Airways, American Airlines, Iberia or Finnair
  • originate from the US, Canada or Mexico
  • land in Europe, Norway or Switzerland*
  • be eligible for earning Tier Points and collecting Avios (ie are not reward flights, staff tickets etc)

(It is ba.com that says ‘Europe, Norway or Switzerland’. As the latter two are obviously in Europe, this implies BA means ‘EU, Norway or Switzerland’ – but what about the UK in that case?)

If you do not complete two one-way transatlantic cash flights, you will be downgraded after six months.

I am assuming that – if you are matched to Gold and do the qualifying return flight – you will receive the usual soft landing to Silver for one year (to 31st March 2026) and then Bronze for a further year (to 31st March 2027).

If you are matched to Silver and do a qualifying return flight, I assume that you will receive the usual soft landing to Bronze (to 31st March 2026) even if you don’t requalify.

What are the benefits of British Airways Gold and Silver status?

We covered the benefits of British Airways Gold status in this article.

How do you apply for a British Airways status match?

Go to this page of ba.com. It explains what documentation is required.

Your account will be upgraded within five business days after your documentation has been checked.

I strongly recommend that UK members of BAEC do NOT switch their account address to the US to take advantage of this, because it will mess up a lot of things including your ability to hold a British Airways American Express card.

The deadline to apply is 7th May.

  • Tony says:

That should fill the lounges to capacity…..esp the new AMS lounge which makes its own BA customers premiums queue for
    entry…!!

  • Jim Lovejoy says:

The T&C seems to say that completing the qualifying flights will extend your status until March 2026.
“9. Eligible participants who … will qualify for an extension… for a further year.”
    Am I missing something?

    • Rob says:

Hmm. If you earned Gold from scratch then, yes, you’d get it to March 2026. My reading was that this match worked differently.

  • Mark says:

My 5 and 6 year old children are Virgin Silver and are in a UK based household account . We also have a US address . If I changed their address to the US one (whilst leaving mine as UK) and applied for the status match can you see any nasty side effect ?

    • Rob says:

On the face of it no, unless there is a rule saying all HHA members must live in the same country (but I don’t think there is).

  • Mark says:

Thanks . I’ll give it a go . It will save over £1000 in seat reservation fees for our July flights if it works

  • kai says:

Looking at the terms, it seems to suggest two return not one-way flights.

    • Rob says:

It’s confusing but that’s not what it says. It DOES imply that it has to be a return rather than 2 x one-ways although BA told me separately that one ways are fine.

Where Qualifying Flight is capitalised, it talks about needing one flight. Elsewhere it talks of two qualifying flights but that is NOT capitalised and so the definition given does not apply.

Basically …. two qualifying flights equals one Qualifying Flight.

      • Brett Dahlenburg says:

Rob, do you know if the flights need to be booked after the tier match is granted or will it work with an existing booking?

  • d3vski says:

just in time for the summer rush! Nothing to worry about too much… Americans can’t even use their BA status domestically without sacrificing. Their upgrades and precious redeemable miles.

  • John says:

    The landing page isn’t helpful:
!Want to keep your Silver or Gold Membership?
    To qualify, these flights must:
Originate from the US, Canada or Mexico
Fly to the UK and onwards to Europe
(note that it says these “flights”, plural; and it says “to the u.k. AND onwards to Europe”

Noting that the T & C’s say that ” A qualifying Flight is a published fare or a net fare…., for a round trip flight”

Almost seems like both flights have to be round-trip / return flights, and both have to originate in the US, etc.

  • Leonard says:

Tried signing up but keep getting “Sorry, there was a problem processing your request, please try again or call us.”

    Anyone else seeing this?
