News in brief:
Hilton buys the NoMad brand to accelerate its ‘luxury lifestyle’ plans
Hilton has acquired the NoMad London hotel in Covent Garden, in an intriguing acquisition.
Technically, it has acquired a majority interest in Sydell Group which owns the NoMad brand. Sydell is also a shareholder in The Ned, alongside Soho House, but this is not joining Hilton.
Hilton has been known to be planning a ‘luxury lifestyle’ hotel brand for some time to compete against Marriott’s W and the like. It seems that acquiring the NoMad brand is a way of speeding this up.
NoMad London is, admittedly, a very well regarded hotel. However, NoMad offshoots in New York and Los Angeles have closed. NoMad Las Vegas, which is run by MGM, is not included in the deal and will be rebranded. It’s not a lot to show for a 12-year old brand.
Despite this, Hilton believes that it can eventually open 100 NoMad hotels globally, and that 10 are in ‘advanced stages of development’.
Sydell will retain responsibility for designing the hotels whilst Hilton will take charge of development. NoMad London will join Hilton Honors later this year.

Barcelona gains a Grand Hyatt hotel
Hyatt has announced the opening of the Grand Hyatt Barcelona hotel.
The hotel is not new but a conversion of an existing property. It was previously the Hotel SOFIA Barcelona, part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection since 2018. It has since been refurbished to bring it in line with Grand Hyatt standards.
The Grand Hyatt Barcelona is located in the Les Corts district of the city, on its Western edges. Landmarks nearby include the Monastery of Pedralbes and FC Barcelona’s home at Camp Nou. It is a 15-minute metro ride into the city centre.
The hotel has 465 rooms including 49 suites and a penthouse. There’s also a large spa and pool as well as a number of meeting and conference rooms and four restaurants.
