Excellent Manchester to New York and Orlando Avios availability in Aer Lingus business class

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It’s now three years since Aer Lingus started its direct services from Manchester to New York, Orlando and Barbados.

Whilst very useful for Avios collectors in the north of England, these services have historically seen very little in terms of Business Class availability for redemptions.

This seems to be changing. And, of course, you can now use British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion vouchers on Aer Lingus (and indeed Iberia).

The new Aer Lingus redemption booking site makes it far easier to flick through dates and see how much availability is there. All three routes are looking pretty good – unless the website is having teething trouble and throwing up false availability.

I searched for the next six months. Here are the number of days with outbound Avios availability in Business Class from Manchester to New York JFK:

  • April 2024 – 13 days
  • May 2024 – 21 days
  • June 2024 – every day
  • July 2024 – 29 days
  • August 2024 – 29 days
  • September 2024 – 28 days

I would expect inbound availability to be tighter because those are overnight flights. Some people will mix and match an Economy outbound for the day flight with a Business Class flat bed return.

This analysis was done via aerlingus.com. I can’t be certain that ba.com will see the same number of seats. This is only an issue if you want to use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, since this requires you to book via ba.com.

(I explain how to book via aerlingus.com in this article from yesterday.)

I didn’t do the same exercise with Orlando but it also looks very open in Business Class. I did check August 2024 and there are 28 days with outbound Business Class availability, and usually three seats.

The Barbados service is still running until the end of May and then takes a break until the autumn. May is wide open with up to five Business Class seats available, albeit there are only three flights per week.

Remember that Aer Lingus does not guarantee to open up any Business Class seats on its flights. It does guarantee four seats in total, but these all appear to be in Economy. Seeing this much availability is a bit spooky to be honest.

How many Avios are needed?

This PDF shows the number of Avios required for Aer Lingus redemptions but the Manchester services are not listed.

However, this is the New York pricing from Manchester:

  • Economy (off peak): 13,000 Avios each way
  • Economy (peak): 20,000 Avios each way
  • Business (off peak): 50,000 Avios each way
  • Business (peak): 60,000 Avios each way

This is the Orlando and Barbados pricing from Manchester:

  • Economy (off peak): 16,250 Avios each way
  • Economy (peak): 25,000 Avios each way
  • Business (off peak): 62,500 Avios each way
  • Business (peak): 75,000 Avios each way

What are the taxes and charges?

Very reasonable, given that Air Passenger Duty can’t be avoided. This is what you pay between Manchester and New York in Business Class on an off-peak date:

Aer Lingus Avios taxes manchester to new york business class

With an Amex companion voucher, you’d be looking at 100,000 Avios + £895 for two people. Remember that you need to book via ba.com (the same taxes and charges apply) to use a companion voucher.

What is Aer Lingus like in Business Class?

Here are our latest Aer Lingus business class reviews:

I think that Manchester is now running exclusively with the A330 fleet, but check. It is the same seat regardless, the only difference is whether you have a single aisle or two aisle aircraft. It is the move to ‘all A330’ aircraft which has presumably allowed the increase in the number of Avios seats.

  • Erico1875 says:

Surely from Manchester for 2 peopke and companion voucher will be 100K Avios + £895.24 (497.62 ×2)

  • Bigmaggot says:

Yes 3 business seats only available, nothing for families!

    • Scottpat78 says:

What if you only have 1 kid or a single parent with 2 kids? Are they not families?

Some folks will have a dig at anything. If it doesn’t suit you, move on. We are a family of 4, so this probably won’t fit for me.

    • zapato1060 says:

Yep, there was me thinking me, my wife and son were a family. How silly of me.

    • MT says:

Put the adults in economy and kids in business… sorted!!

    • bafan says:

For the love of god, shut up.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

And if it was 4 than how is that fair for families of 5?

I’m sure some families will be more than happy with 3 rewards and getting a cash ticket for the rest..

    • VerdantBacon says:

There aren’t enough business class seats for me to get my kids, parents, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews on board, how is this useful for families?!

      • Bigmaggot says:

        Average family is 4

        • Rob says:

Without wishing to state the obvious, unless you had twins, any family of 4 would have been a family of 3 at one point.

        • Richard E says:

Well, this comment opened up my demographic curiosity…

Mr Google (yes, I’m being lazy) tells me:

“The average UK family has 1.7 children, the average family also has 1.4 parents. So if you had 10 typical families in a park, there’d be 17 children and 14 adults.”

My maths tells me that is an average family size of 3.1. That’s mathematically more caused by single parent families than single child families.

          Also:
“The United Kingdom had an average household size of 2.4 people in 2021.”

Sooooo, 3 business seats is looking useful for a lot of people.

(I say as part of a family of 4… I’d happily grab 3 business seats on miles and pay for the extra one)

          R

          A very lazy search.

I wasn’t aware maggots maintained any type of relationship with their families @BigMaggot

Pour boiling water or a vinegar solution on maggots for natural ways to eradicate.

  • MT says:

What is immigration like in NYC these days. Does it make more sense to fly via Dublin and clear immigration there?

    • Graham C says:

Luck of the draw. It took us 90 minutes to clear Houston last month, it was terrible. Very little desks were open.

Any opportunity to avoid it at the other side should be welcomed I’d say. YMMV.

    • The Original Nick. says:

DUB – BOS, then just get the Amtrak down the coast to NYC. That’s what I have done in the past. A night in Dublin, a night in Boston then 3 or 4 nights in NYC. Then you have options to fly back.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

You are adding extra time at the front end – and likely more time than any delay on arrival what with the flight to Dublin and the pre clearance process itself.

Depends on day of the week and what other flights arrive at the same time.

If you land after a flight from an exotic destination whose arrivals require more processing then that’s going to cause delays for you for example.

    • Tom says:

Toy also avoid UK APD if you originate in Dublin. That is a biggie.

  • NorthernLass says:

How far out does EI usually release seats or is it random?

  • Lev441 says:

Rob – any idea if there are plans for aer Lingus seats to be included in seats spy now they are available on their own website?

    • NorthernLass says:

That would be extremely helpful – at present you have to wade through all the LON departures if searching on ba.com!

    • Rob says:

      Not heard anything.

  • cmh52 says:

Anyone actually able to combine their Avios without getting ‘Combine my Avios is not available at the moment. Please try again later’? It’s been like this since shortly after the new site launched!

    • Rob says:

It’s done, they are aware – had an email from Lingus yesterday.

      • cmh52 says:

Thank you – good to know it’s just not my issue

      • Novice says:

And this is sort of off topic but what is up with Amex. There’s no live chat anymore. I personally prefer live chat.

        • zapato1060 says:

Comes and it goes sometimes. Unless this time its perm.

          • Novice says:

Ok thanks 🙏 I just noticed this week because I haven’t received signup bonus for my amex gold so wanted to chat with them. I have found that I can articulate my problems better in writing rather than getting annoyed on the phone 😂

      • SR says:

        Hi Rob
I attempted a combine on avios.com on 16 Feb but error message popped up that it failed.
Next thing I knew all my avios disappeared from my BAEC account but didn’t go to avios.com account and no email confirmation from either avios.com nor BAEC.
I have called BA several times with no luck.
Please please advise me what to do next or who to contact.

        thanks

        • Rob says:

          No idea, sorry.

        • cmh52 says:

Have you any other accounts that were previously linked to avios.com like Vueling? When I tried to move mine from BA to Aer Club the other morning they went to my Vueling account

          • SR says:

No nothing else linked to avios.com just aer club, not sure what to do now, I feel like I have been robbed of 280,000 avios. I just need someone in the avios program to talk to and retrieve my avios.
            Any ideas?

  • Wally1976 says:

If anyone’s interested, these are the return economy pricings for MAN-NYC on Aer Lingus, peak date, obtained from ba.com:

    40000 Avios + £ 307.62

    36000 Avios + £ 457.62

    30000 Avios + £ 667.62

    26000 Avios + £ 717.62

    23000 Avios + £ 767.62

    20000 Avios + £ 817.62

    • Andy says:

Looks like great value to me considering you can get £400 cash return (granted I might be looking off-peak).

  • FrequentFlyer89 says:

On Aer Lingus I am seeing 125,000 Avios + £458.23 for 1 Adult MAN-MCO return.

Yet a 2-for-1 voucher search on BA for same flights is: 180000 Avios + £ 916.46 Obviously with lower Avios higher cash options too.

    Am I missing something?

    • Rob says:

Yes, but no idea what. All of the price checks I did yesterday worked fine on ba.com and matched the Lingus site.

      • FrequentFlyer89 says:

Something odd is going on with the pricing. A random search for a Saturday to Saturday in August 2023 gave me the option of ~£900 + 95K Avios (amazing value for that time of year)

The February 2024 example I gave above is nearly double the Avios?!

    • weejasser says:

I’m getting the same results. The cash price is also wildly different on aer lingus/ba websites. Man-Mco £536 on aerlingus.com with a bag yet same flight on ba.com is £696.
