Jet2 to open a new base at Bournemouth Airport

Jet2 is moving to the south coast, with the announcement yesterday of a new base at Bournemouth Airport.

Bournemouth will become Jet2’s 12th UK base when flights start on 1st April 2025. (Yes, 2025 – there’s no rush to book.)

16 routes will be launched. Impressively, this will be done with a grand total of just two aircraft because most routes will only see one or two flights per week.

Jet2 to open a new base at Bournemouth Airport

Here are the routes planned, although I would expect some tweaking over the next 12 months based on how sales go:

  • Tenerife – up to three weekly services
  • Fuerteventura – weekly services (Wednesdays)
  • Gran Canaria – weekly services (Sundays)
  • Lanzarote – up to two weekly services (Mondays, Fridays)
  • Alicante – up to two weekly services (Tuesdays, Saturdays)
  • Palma – up to four weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays)
  • Ibiza – up to two weekly services (Thursdays, Sundays)
  • Menorca – weekly services (Sundays)
  • Antalya – up to two weekly services (Wednesdays, Saturdays)
  • Dalaman – up to two weekly services (Thursdays, Sundays)
  • Faro – up to two weekly services (Mondays, Fridays)
  • Madeira – weekly services (Thursdays)
  • Crete – weekly services (Tuesdays)
  • Corfu – weekly services (Wednesdays)
  • Rhodes – weekly services (Tuesdays)
  • Zante – weekly services (Thursdays)

Bournemouth Airport is already well served by other low cost carriers in the summer. Only two of these routes are new to the airport – Fuerteventura and Madeira. That said, the strength of the Jet2holidays brand should mean that the airline has no problem filling the seats, even on routes where it competes with Ryanair.

I suspect that this is a blow for Southampton Airport which was hoping to attract new routes like these following the opening of its extended runway – click here to see what Rhys found on his recent visit. Bournemouth Airports expects the Jet2 flights to create 100 new jobs at the airport.

Whilst it will be a year before we see these flights launch, Jet2 is gearing up for the imminent launch of a new base at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

You can find out more on the Bournemouth Airport website here.

PS. Before anyone asks, there is no Executive Lounge at Bournemouth Airport! There were plans, as we reported back in 2019, but something caused the project to be scrapped – even though it was far enough advanced for the airport website to have started taking bookings. Here is a render:

This is a return to their roots – Channel Express used be based at BOH before dropping the name for Jet2 completely

    • strickers says:

I remember doing all my initial training at Bournemouth 18 years ago. Even though the airline had launched from Leeds everything else was initially down South and moved to Leeds a few years later. We still even use the Chanex call sign.

  • david says:

Jet2 business model of slow growth and catering to a niche market has served them well. Even the most non-hfp type of person was telling me a few days back about their “premium” seats. Kudos to Jet2.

    • Chris R says:

I really would not consider Jet2 to be niche. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re the UK market leader for European package holidays, plus they’ll have decent share of flight only traffic.

      • Rob says:

Jet2 is very good. We took them to Dubrovnik two years ago from Stansted and could not fault them at all.

        • CamFlyer says:

          +1
I happily paid a premium to fly Jet2 over FR from STN last year, once flight only and once a package holiday (second time ever). The staff at both STN and TFS were excellent: they called STN management to clear the stalled queue of 30+ for oversize baggage check in (child car seat), and at TFS pushed us through without any stress when we misjudged rental car drop off and arrived only a few minutes before check in closed. The pre-ordered onboard food was also very acceptable. We’ll gladly fly them again, over BA (unless CE).

Love Jet2. One of the best budget airlines on Europe

    • Novice says:

I personally hate the airline after using it a few times; never again.

They only care about their niche market and nobody else during the flights.

The first time I wrote it off as maybe I was just unlucky but all of my 2 return so 4 flights were the same horrendous experience of drunk groups of passengers who were being given non stop drinks from crew members whenever they wanted and then cueing all the way down the length of the plane for the toilet. And being in my space as I was unlucky to have aisle seat she first time because it was only seat left.

The other 3 times: because of drunk passengers, there was no peace. There seem to be arguments going on in the flights so it doesn’t make a person feel safe.

I have nothing against people drinking but in a metal tube where you might one day need to evacuate I do take issue with airlines letting people get drunk and make the flights unpleasant for others. I have seen people drink in business but they never act like chavs.

      • Michael C says:

Have to admit that my only experience (MANY moons ago) was exactly like that: it was like something out of Airplane! Non-toddler children clambering over the backs of seats to the row behind, bottles being drunk in the aisles, and flight attendants serving as much and as quickly as possible.

To be fair, have heard many good reviews since!

      • david says:

You telling me you dont like a bit of fisticuffs 6 miles up in the air? It adds excitement/adventure to your trip. 😀

      • ADS says:

the only time I’ve seen police meet a flight I was on was LPA-GLA on 31st December 2017

we all had to stay in our seats whilst the guy was removed from the aircraft – for some drink related offence!

        • The Savage Squirrel says:

I’d be more inclined to ascribe this to flying to Glasgow on New Yrs Eve to be honest 😂.

      • @mkcol says:

        Astounded to read this given
A: personal experience of half a dozen of more sectors with them
B: their tagline of being the family friendly airline

      • Peter K says:

I’ve tried jet2 and it was a pleasant experience. Even if a little cramped in the seats with wise.
BA club last time had a man getting drunker, louder and more irritating all the way to Dalaman.
Food wise (pre ordered on jet2) were similar quality.
Sometimes you’re lucky with who you get as fellow passengers, sometimes you’re unlucky. The extra elbow room in club is the biggest differentiator in my opinion.

    • @mkcol says:

      What are these premium seats?
Every time I’ve used them it’s been a wafer-thin in a solid shell affair (still comfy enough for 4ish hours) and nothing different throughout the cabin.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

I live in Yorkshire and almost every short haul flight I take is with Jet2; no idea how many. Another one next week.
I have never encountered drunken groups or “bovver”. Not even once.
Maybe it is destination dependent. Admit it; you all are flying the Glasgow to Magaluf route regularly 😉

  • Dave T says:

We have used Bournemouth airport in the past but Bournemouth airport does not have good public transport links and during the summer months can be a nightmare getting to with all the extra holiday traffic , but good luck to Jet2 just wish they had chosen Southampton airport

  • davet says:

I think this is the right move for bournemouth, southampton should be attracting more of a flagship carrier like Lufthansa

  • RH says:

This is fantastic news, Bournemouth airport is great. Very quick and don’t get many delays when I fly. Just needs the airport lounge now!

  • June Summers Shaw says:

JET2 get good reports from those who live in Jersey. Can we add the Bournemouth route now to the destinations please?

  • Jr says:

    Couple of points.
    1. The executive suite that never was – originally announced because Bournemouth FC made it to the premier league
    2. Totally agree regarding public transportation to the airport. It’s woefully inadequate as only operates a few times per day. Perhaps MoreBus will bring a decent schedule in now that Jet2 will operate from BOH in 2025. However, the airport management won’t push for decent services when they making a mint out of the ridiculous drop off/pick up fee which is £5 for thirty minutes. The access road to the airport has been deliberately changed to stop walk up to the terminal from the traffic lights on parlwy lane

    • Callum says:

There’s a sign saying walking prohibited, but it’s incredibly easy. There’s only one small patch where you’re walking on dirt (or if raining, presumably mud) – the rest is paved.

It’s not ideal (definitely not with luggage), but the normal city buses stop about 50 minutes away from the airport – if it’s a nice day I’ll walk from there. Stretch the legs before being crammed into a tiny seat for 4 hours!

      • zapato1060 says:

Reminds me of the walk I do when I leave my car for free near Gatwick. Around 20-25mins walk but leave Mrs and bags at airport first obvs.

  • ADS says:

“the strength of the Jet2holidays brand should mean that the airline has no problem filling the seats, even on routes where it competes with Ryanair”

but you’d expect Ryanair to increase the number of their flights in the coming year to try and cement their position at BOH … so they may have to price aggressively to fill their planes 🙂

such a shame BOH has such lousy public transport

    • strickers says:

They will want the aircraft full of package holiday customers, don’t expect them to compete with Ryanair on flight only price.
