Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

Haven’t read the posts so may have been covered……

    Has anyone asked BA…..WHY ?

    • Rob says:

It was in the City presentation last year. BA, Iberia and Lingus will align their TP schemes so they are identical. This means (for a start) they need to work to common dates, so BA is moving to the Iberia April-March model. All three will then move to a common TP earning model and all benefits will be standardised (so either Iberia gains a soft landing or BA loses it).

Eventually it will end up like Lufthansa Group where all your miles and status stuff for multiple airlines operates off miles-and-more.com and the airline websites have nothing to do with it.

      • David says:

Oh jesus. Looks more and more likely than soon we see the end of 34k to NYC for example and low taxes and fees from MAD? Hope I’m very very wrong.

        • memesweeper says:

The potentially useful discrepancies will disappear.

No reason to think the airlines will align their fares, fees and charges from different airports. Madrid is a different market to London.

Aligning reward flight saver is going to be a nightmare!

Overall – for the canny reader of small print who likes to exploit sweet spots – this is never going to be good news. But I’d not imagine everything is going to get worse in every dimension (BA adopts IBs no refund policy on partner redemptions; IB adopts BAs London YQ from Madrid; Aer Lingus adopts IBs redemption chart etc).

  • Sideshowbob says:

    Thank you.

  • Mark I says:

What may be interesting is how this will impact those starting out on a BAEC tier journey. In the past, people may have taken one flight and enrolled and then developed a plan to get the points needed over the next year, a reasonable time frame for someone starting to play with the system and an incentive to stick with BA for flights for the next year. Now, well say a flight at Christmas means that they only have a few months to add to those points and move towards a tier, may well not be long enough and they may decide not to bother and investigate other carriers.

  • James Andressen says:

So as a December 2024 renewal, the most advantageous would be to book flights to earn tier points this year after April rather than before.. because then I can carry these over?

    • Rich_A says:

December as well. That is my understanding too.

    • Mikel says:

That’s my understanding too. I’m December too and based on the helpful advice from the HfP team, my Istanbul trip is now on hold until after April 1st

  • Matthew says:

I think I’m still getting confused. My current year ends August. If I go up to Gold in September 2024, will I retain that status all the way up to August 2026? I.e. for the rest of that membership year, plus the one after? Or will I effectively lose 5 months of Gold and it will end in April 2026?

    • NorthernLass says:

Ends April 26, according to what we’re being told ATM.

    • Charlie says:

This is one of the grey areas. Your current year ends August 8th. If you then yield 1,500 TPs between August 9th 2024 and September 30th 2024 you would have been gold until 30th September 2026, but under the new system will only be gold until 30th April 2024 – unless of course, BA don’t update/destroy their IT until after 1st October 2024, in which case you should already have the 30th September 2026 expiry date on your account, which should trump the new system (probably). 😉

      • Alan T says:

I’m assuming I will lose 7 months (Apr 26 v Nov 26) on my planned re-qualification by end Nov 24 (Oct TPY end – only 80 TPs this year) but given BA’s renown incompetence with IT maybe I can hope? 😉

  • Alan M says:

Hi Guys. BA haven’t thought this through enough as this really doesn’t work for me. Mainly because I plan my Tier Point earning year to retain Gold. My membership renewal ends on 8 October 2024. I will earn, unusually this Tier Point earning year, 1500 points by the middle of March 24 and therefore will retain Gold until 31/3/25. From March until 8 October 2024 I have booked a number of flights either Economy, Reward or using up Avios. I have therefore calculated that I will only have earned 15 Tier points for the period 1/4/24 – 8/10/24 which will be credited back to my shortened tier point earning year. This means between 8/10/24 & 31/3/25 I’ll have to earn at least 1485 Tier Points to retain Gold for 25/26. Have I got this right?

    • John says:

No. Why don’t you read the article above? It’s very clear.

    • Charlie says:

Clearly BA didn’t consult you Alan 🙂 You are currently gold until 30th November 2024. You will have earned 1,500 TPs this year to extend your status to 30th November 2025. Had these 1,500 TPs been yielded after 1st April 2024, then your gold status would have been extended to 30th April 2026. As things stand, you will be gold until 30th November 2025, then silver until 30th April 2026, then bronze until 30th April 2027 ( presuminbg everything else remains constant).

  • Len says:

We have two BA holidays booked between April 24 and July 24 that will attract 1600 tier points and take us both past the 2500 that triggers a Guf2. My partners year ends in August and mine in September. We have another holiday booked in November that will attract 1120 tier points. If we are both recredited 1600 that will again take us past 2500. Are BA likely to award us two more Guf2s?
I live in hope, she who must be obeyed less so.

    • Angelamc11 says:

I would say yes. If you are starting a new year, albeit shorter, it would make sense that this would be a yes.

    • Angelamc11 says:

Just to add, if you moved the Nov holiday to before end of August, you could both have the GUF1 at 3500 points, giving 4 GU vouchers each. You would then start the new period with over 3500 points, gaining them again. Potential 16 x GUF vouchers 🤣🤣

      • Charlie says:

More than likely not. You’ll get extended status between 31st October 2025 and 30th April 2026 and your wife will get extended status from 30th September 2025 to 30th April 2026 because of those 1,600 tier points, but the second GUF2 – and you are in a grey area – would arguably only be attributed if you yielded 2,500 points between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025. And that’s dependent on BA’s IT system not working properly. 🙂

    • Charlie says:

      No

  • Ishan says:

Thank you. This is exactly what the BA page needed to say. HfP once again showing why it’s a great resource.
