Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • Julian says:

    Fantastic Article. Thanks

BA IT Team should learn from HFP

  • Earthman says:

Sorry April 30 2027,I’m going to be too old to fly in 3027 and besides we’ll all probably be getting Scotty to beam us wherever then 😂

  • SG says:

to clarify, does this then mean,

My collection year starts on Jun 8 (existing gold). I have one flight remaining to renew. Based on yesterday’s article, if I took that final flight after April, I would get gold until April 2026. That is no longer valid?

So if I currently have 1350 tier points. And I take a 150 TP flight in May 2024, when would my status end? July 2025 or Apr 2026

    • Rob says:

Correct. When BA said (indeed, does still say) that ‘anyone who earns status during the transition period [1 April to 31 March] gets it to 30th April 2026’ they were wrong.

      Well, not quite wrong.

ba.com talks about TWO ‘transition periods’ – the full year (1st April to 31st March) and your own personal ‘transition period’ from the end of your next year to 1st April 2025. The two are discussed interchangeably without clarifying which one they mean, hence the confusion.

      • BA Enthusiast says:

        that’s good news. Thanks Rob!

All of this sound like a planned multi phase simplification of BAEC (avios subscription to generate direct revenue, move to revenue based avios, simpler tier point earning model). I suspect a change in TP earning model itself coming next?

  • Barnaby100 says:

    Sorry still confused
Year ends 9th feb. 2000 tier points so retain gold
Flying next week 500 tier points. Will typically retain gold by august

Is it saying that when i retain gold this year it will only be until 31st march 2025

Points earned after april will count for reaccreditation on 1st april but the 500 from next week will not and so despite going over 1500 i will lose status on 31st march 2025 unless i get 1500 between april 2024 and april 2025 and not the 1000 planned for and booked?

    • Rob says:

“Your tier point collection year will renew on 9th February 2024 and continue as normal until 8th February 2025. Any status earned or renewed during this period will be valid until 31st March 2026.”

  • LittleNick says:

Great article and explanation, clarifies a lot, appreciated. Thanks HFP team

  • Mikel says:

Stop all this praise for the HfP team. They’ll be charging us for advice soon 🤣

  • Peter says:

8/9/24 year-end. I will have 1,100 TP on 31/3/24, so will retain Silver until end October 2025. That’s clear.
Then in April and May I earn another 500 points, taking me to Gold until end October 2025. That’s clear.
“A Tier Point Adjustment will be made at the start of your shortened collection period (on 9th September 2024), re-crediting any tier points and qualifying flights you earned from 1st April 2024 – 8th September 2024.” So on 9th September 2024 (assuming no other TPs earnt between May and September), I will be credited with the 500 TPs earned in April/May. That’s clear.

It’s the next line in the article that confuses me.
“Any status earned or renewed during this period will be valid until 30th April 2026”

The word “earned” here is not clear. I will have gone from Silver to Gold in this period from the extra 500 points. Will the uplift to Gold be counted as “earned” and therefore valid until 30th April 2026?

    • Rob says:

If you reach Gold between 9 Sep 24 and 31 Mar 25 you keep it to 30 April 26.

  • aceman says:

ok i’ve just dropped to bronze (weirdly? on feb 1st) a friend is gifting me silver on the 9th feb. when will that expire? 30th april 2026? thats a pretty decent gift if thats the case!

    • Charlie says:

If your year end is 8th February, and you are gifted silver on 9th February, then it will be valid until 31st March 2026, presuming you yield no more TPs between now and then. It may be prudent to give it a couple of extra days before the gifting.

    • sayling says:

That’s not weird… collection year-end of 8th Dec, status expiry – end of January.
