Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • HampshireHog says:

ok fine but what about soft landings if you don’t keep your current tier, will they all stop at 30 April 2026?

  • Britsinvade says:

Hallelujah! Thank you for bringing some clarity to this!

  • daveinitalia says:

It doesn’t seem too complex to me:
    – If your membership year ends before the new rules kick in (1 April 2025), this year will be as normal
    – Your next membership year will end 31 March 2025 regardless of how short this will be
    – To make up for it, any TPs earned in your previous year from 1 April 2024 will carry forward to your new partial membership year

    Am I missing anything?

    • Rhys says:

That’s correct. But it certainly wasn’t clear from the BA website!

    • Jordan D says:

Exactly – the whole article could have been summarised like this. Not sure what’s so confusing for everyone.

    • Giulietta 34 says:

Very clear but when those TP’s are calculated-what do they then inform? If I have gold til Jan 2026(April 2026? On new scheme?) does the TP adjustment inform my soft landing status? And if so-til when?

      TIA

  • Tim says:

Based of HFP assessment if you are about to move up a tier is it worth holding off till April 1st 2024?

    • Rhys says:

That will depend on your exact membership year dates, as the transition period will affect different membership year start dates differently.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

This is an excellent summary so well done to the two of you for preparing it!

I hope people fully read the sections based on their collection year end dates to see how they are affected

  • Skywalker says:

This is much more like it, and what BA should have done to begin with.

@Rob and @Rhys, I hope BA pays you well for having done their jobs for them.

    • polly says:

      +1
Pity the vast nos of baec members who don’t have hfp to guide them. We will be losing 6/12 of silver soft landing. Let’s hope BA chose to add those months on for the 1st year or two, so folks don’t miss out too much.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

BA did do a lot of this as they prepared sections (like here) for each month of the year.

The problem was a lot of people didn’t read them properly!

  • TokyoFan says:

So for those of us with May 8th collection year end, who were planning on hitting the Amex 15k for 100 TP spend post 8th May to ensure it goes to next year’s status, if we reach it in April, and then manage another 5k spend by 31/05, we get the 100 for this collection year, then 150 for next? (Too niche?)

    • Andy says:

I have the same time line and position (and have already renewed my status). Remember spend offer ends 21st May. Also bear in mind avios cut off is 6 days before Amex statement date. So I have a statement date of the 5th. I need to trigger the 15k spend no earlier than 31st March (credited end of April the 100 points) and then spend the additional £10k before 21st May.(to get remaining 100 points). So with change I now have an extra month window to time my spending

  • DanMM says:

    Thanks for trying to clarify
However there needs to be more of an emphasis on the effect soft-landing will have, someone with and end Feb date will lose 11 months of status vs someone with end April date who won’t notice much. From what I can see this is the biggest material effect this change has.

    • Rhys says:

It’s a work in progress. We thought it was important to publish this information as soon as possible.

      • DanMM says:

“Yes, you may be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing”
sounds like it is just something we have to put up with. But it’s the difference between 1m vs 1y of status – so a big deal. I hope BA will address this (or there is sufficient push back from those affected)

    • Rob says:

Is a soft landing an ‘official’ BAEC benefit though? I’m not sure it is. If it’s not an ‘official’ benefit then you’ve got your answer.
