From 2025, British Airways is changing your Executive Club membership year. It will be aligning tier point collection years for all members to start on 1st April.

British Airways has updated its Q&A during Tuesday to reflect issues which we raised earlier in the day, and we now have a little more clarity.

The biggest winners are families where everyone has a different tier point year end. You can currently have a situation where each family member takes exactly the same flights but some gain status whilst others don’t. This problem will go away.

The biggest long-term downside is that the ‘grace period’ is cut from 7 weeks to 4 weeks. At present, your year ends on the 8th of the month but you retain your old status until the end of the FOLLOWING month. Going forward, all membership years will end on 31st March and all tier statuses will adjust on 30th April.

Why is British Airways doing this?

The official reason is ‘simplicity’.

You can’t argue with that. The current trial of awarding tier points for British Airways American Express spend, for example, is not working as well as it should because of different membership year end dates.

The real reason is probably to align the BA system with Iberia, which already uses April to March membership years, in advance of a joint change to the BA / Iberia tier point system at some future date. This seems likely to involve some sort of revenue or credit card spend metric, given how the world is moving.

How BA tier point collection years currently work

At the moment, your tier point collection year is based on the anniversary of the date you joined British Airways Executive Club. Your tier points would reset on the 8th day of your anniversary month.

For example, if you joined in March, your membership year would reset on 8th April. If you joined in November, it would be 8th December.

This meant that the entire cohort of British Airways Executive Club members is spread across twelve possible membership year end dates.

(This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Whilst frustrating for families, it avoids any spike in call centre activity or tier point runs which will occur when everyone has the same date.)

How tier point collection years will work going forward

From 2025, British Airways is aligning tier point collection years for all members.

That means that instead of twelve possible combinations, everyone’s tier points will reset on the same date.

British Airways has chosen to follow the UK fiscal year, starting on 1st April and ending on 31st March.

That means you’ll need to earn enough tier points to qualify for Bronze, Silver or Gold status within this period.

The change will occur on 1st April 2025.

I’m not sure that 1st April is, logically, the best option because of how Easter moves from year to year and this tends to be a period with reduced corporate travel. In some years it will make it harder to push through additional flights in the weeks leading to 31st March. It will also impact leisure travellers who use long-haul cash flights over Easter to drive their tier points.

What this means for you

Depending on your current membership year, this change will affect you differently. For that reason, we have put together a separate article outlining how the transition from now until 1st April 2025 will be handled, which you can read here.

However, the bottom line is:

– If your membership year ends before the new rules kick in (1st April 2025), this year will be as normal
– Your next membership year will end 31 March 2025 regardless of how short this will be
– To make up for it, BA will re-credit any tier points earned in your old membership year from 1st April 2024 to your new partial membership year

Everyone’s tier point balances will reset on 1st April 2025, which will become the first full year under the new, aligned system.

What about your existing status?

Here is what British Airways says:

“No, there will be no change to:

  • Your current Tier status
  • The benefits you receive according to your Tier status
  • The way you can renew or upgrade your status during your Tier Point collection period ending on or before 8 March 2025

Any Tier status earned in your next Tier Point collection period ending on 31 March 2025 will be valid until 30 April 2026.”

BA has now updated the FAQ following our queries to add:

Any existing status valid beyond 31 March 2025 will continue for the full duration.

These means, for example, that if you have already earned Gold status in your current membership year, which ends 8th October 2024, your status will remain valid until 30th November 2025. It will not be shortened to end on 30th April 2025.

However, your ‘soft landing’ period will be reduced. In the example above, even though British Airways is allowing you to keep your Gold status until 30th November 2025, your soft landing to Silver – assuming you don’t requalify – will only last until 30th April 2026 and not 31st November 2026.

Conclusion

The changes BA is making to the Executive Club mean it make it simpler to understand. Rather than twelve different possible membership years, based on your anniversary of joining, everyone’s years will start and end on the same day.

(Of course, this also means that a lot of people will be doing tier point runs at the same time. I suspect flights to Sofia in Club Europe will be fully booked for all of March 2025, as this route earns 160 tier points return for around £200 in a sale.)

The change will also align BAEC with Iberia Plus, and should also simplify the IT backend required to make it all work if the programmes are moved to the same platform.

The good news is that BA is implementing a year-long transition period. This is a fair way of moving to the new system and allows everyone to earn status under both the new and existing system.

    Can you help me understand what my soft landing to BA silver will mean be based on the new rules?
    My tier point year ends in a few days on the 8th of February and I managed to earn enough tier points for BA Gold status. My BA Gold Status will accordingly run until 31st March 2025. If I don’t requalify for Gold, I will soft land on BA Silver, starting from 1st of April 2025 until 31st of March 2026? Am I missing anything?

      I have the same year end date, 8th Feb. I made Silver in August 23 so expected to keep that until Feb 25 but will now have it until 31st March 25?
      I’m in Madrid now flying back on Weds 7th so still no point in upgrading. I also have a trip end of March coming back 3rd April so may be worth upgrading the homebound flight as it’ll be counted towards status after April 25 to retain Silver?

    I have booked a trip for march, which will get me to gold status. My TP collection year ends 8th July.

      your status would run until 31st August 2025 so don’t think you’ll be affected yet!

      It’s status earning status in your next year which might be as you would have earned until 31 Aug 26 but instead it’s only until 30 Apr 26 same for a soft landing to Silver. You’ll be cut short 6 months.

    Can anyone advise on this please as unclear on the impact. My year end is August 2024 and I have 880 TP and no trips planned until after August. Does this I will need to achieve 600TP by April 2025 to retain silver?

      You keep Silver until either April 2025 (if you believe ba.com) or August 2025 (if you believe what the BA press office told us).

      To retain it further, you can either earn 600 TP between April 2024 and March 2025 OR you could sit back until April 2025 and start collecting then as part of your April 2025 to March 2026 year (knowing you have Silver anyway until August 2025).

    How does it affect anyone who’s tier point collection period ends in January.

    As far as I can see.

    Your status is based on the current year. Let’s say that you are Silver from 1st March.

    Do you drop to Bronze at the end of March?

    Reading the BA page it appears that you do.

      – Your current Tier Point Collection Year will continue as normal until 8 January 2025
      – Your next collection period will be 9 January – 31 March 2025
      – Tier Point Adjustment: we’ll add on any Tier Points you earn during 1 April 2024 – 8 January 2025 to work out your Tier status
      – Any Tier status you receive during the transition period will expire on 30 April 2026

    What doesn’t seem to be addressed anywhere is the eligible flight requirement. If someone’s current year end is in March, their next collection periods will be 09 Mar 2024 – 08 Mar 2025 and then the shortened 09 Mar 2025 – 31 Mar 2025 with TPs from 01 Apr 2024 brought forward. Would they have to take 4 eligible (BA/IB) flights in the 23 days of the second collection period to maintain status? The BA FAQ doesn’t mention bringing forward the eligible flight count.

    I think it’s clear how the calculation of points works for year ending 31.3.2025 but what happens to status is pretty unclear.

    I see three possibilities for expiry of status:
    A) fixed end date of 30.4.2025 for anyone not renewing by 31.03.2025
    B) grandfathering expiry date so no-one loses months of status
    C) extending everyone who renews between now and March 2025 to 30.4.2026.

    Some of the announcement/ FAQs points to A or C and the “no-one losing out” message points to B or C. I think A or B are most likely.
    – A appears quite harsh but the double-count of TPs earned between 1-4-24 and normal year end makes it less punitive than it might appear. Simple and will reduce number of flyers with status, but makes no difference to those who will retain status.
    – B might be a bit harder to do but is probably fairer on people likely to lose status or drop a tier
    – C is probably overly generous and leaves people with a window from current year end to 31.3.2024 with no incentive to earn TPs to retain status.

    My money is on A.

      ‘A’ would be crazy – stripping Golds of 6+ months of status in some cases? I agree that this is how ba.com currently reads but we are told it is ‘B’. To be honest I was expecting ‘C’.

        All depends how much BA cares about people who are losing status, I guess. If B is easy to implement it would be a no-brainer. C would be great for me but I just don’t see that happening. Will be pleasantly surprised if it does though.

    Nope, brain won’t process this. I have 160 atm. I have enough flights booked beween now and end Dec to retain silver. My tier year is Jan.
    Website says status collection will continue as normal. But then it says anything 1 April 24 – 8 Jan 25 will be added to Jan-Mar 25.
    Can someone translate please?

      you’ll effectively get a second shot at gaining or upgrading your status, I think you’ll also get status for slightly longer as what would have ended 28th Feb 26 will now end 30 Apr 26

      If you don’t meet it by Jan 8th you’ll get 3 more months to get the extra TP instead.

      I think everyone is over complicating if your year ends before 1/4/25. On that date the system will just look at flights and TP in the past 12m to see if your status would change from what you already have.

      You will retain Silver in December. That will be valid until end of April 2026.

      On 1st April 2025, BA will recalculate your tier point balance, looking at flights 1st April 2024 – 31st March 2025. If you qualify for status at that point, it will be added to your account, but no changes will be made to any status you have already earned (so you will be fine, and your Silver will remain valid until April 2026.)

    So just to confirm – my double TP holiday booked for March counts for nothing? Had it been booked for April it would have counted till next year?

      No, it counts in terms of renewing status this year.

      However, if your holiday was in April it would double-count and also help towards requalification the following year.
