From 2025, British Airways is changing your Executive Club membership year. It will be aligning tier point collection years for all members to start on 1st April.

British Airways has updated its Q&A during Tuesday to reflect issues which we raised earlier in the day, and we now have a little more clarity.

The biggest winners are families where everyone has a different tier point year end. You can currently have a situation where each family member takes exactly the same flights but some gain status whilst others don’t. This problem will go away.

The biggest long-term downside is that the ‘grace period’ is cut from 7 weeks to 4 weeks. At present, your year ends on the 8th of the month but you retain your old status until the end of the FOLLOWING month. Going forward, all membership years will end on 31st March and all tier statuses will adjust on 30th April.

Why is British Airways doing this?

The official reason is ‘simplicity’.

You can’t argue with that. The current trial of awarding tier points for British Airways American Express spend, for example, is not working as well as it should because of different membership year end dates.

The real reason is probably to align the BA system with Iberia, which already uses April to March membership years, in advance of a joint change to the BA / Iberia tier point system at some future date. This seems likely to involve some sort of revenue or credit card spend metric, given how the world is moving.

How BA tier point collection years currently work

At the moment, your tier point collection year is based on the anniversary of the date you joined British Airways Executive Club. Your tier points would reset on the 8th day of your anniversary month.

For example, if you joined in March, your membership year would reset on 8th April. If you joined in November, it would be 8th December.

This meant that the entire cohort of British Airways Executive Club members is spread across twelve possible membership year end dates.

(This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Whilst frustrating for families, it avoids any spike in call centre activity or tier point runs which will occur when everyone has the same date.)

How tier point collection years will work going forward

From 2025, British Airways is aligning tier point collection years for all members.

That means that instead of twelve possible combinations, everyone’s tier points will reset on the same date.

British Airways has chosen to follow the UK fiscal year, starting on 1st April and ending on 31st March.

That means you’ll need to earn enough tier points to qualify for Bronze, Silver or Gold status within this period.

The change will occur on 1st April 2025.

I’m not sure that 1st April is, logically, the best option because of how Easter moves from year to year and this tends to be a period with reduced corporate travel. In some years it will make it harder to push through additional flights in the weeks leading to 31st March. It will also impact leisure travellers who use long-haul cash flights over Easter to drive their tier points.

What this means for you

Depending on your current membership year, this change will affect you differently. For that reason, we have put together a separate article outlining how the transition from now until 1st April 2025 will be handled, which you can read here.

However, the bottom line is:

– If your membership year ends before the new rules kick in (1st April 2025), this year will be as normal
– Your next membership year will end 31 March 2025 regardless of how short this will be
– To make up for it, BA will re-credit any tier points earned in your old membership year from 1st April 2024 to your new partial membership year

Everyone’s tier point balances will reset on 1st April 2025, which will become the first full year under the new, aligned system.

What about your existing status?

Here is what British Airways says:

“No, there will be no change to:

  • Your current Tier status
  • The benefits you receive according to your Tier status
  • The way you can renew or upgrade your status during your Tier Point collection period ending on or before 8 March 2025

Any Tier status earned in your next Tier Point collection period ending on 31 March 2025 will be valid until 30 April 2026.”

BA has now updated the FAQ following our queries to add:

Any existing status valid beyond 31 March 2025 will continue for the full duration.

These means, for example, that if you have already earned Gold status in your current membership year, which ends 8th October 2024, your status will remain valid until 30th November 2025. It will not be shortened to end on 30th April 2025.

However, your ‘soft landing’ period will be reduced. In the example above, even though British Airways is allowing you to keep your Gold status until 30th November 2025, your soft landing to Silver – assuming you don’t requalify – will only last until 30th April 2026 and not 31st November 2026.

Conclusion

The changes BA is making to the Executive Club mean it make it simpler to understand. Rather than twelve different possible membership years, based on your anniversary of joining, everyone’s years will start and end on the same day.

(Of course, this also means that a lot of people will be doing tier point runs at the same time. I suspect flights to Sofia in Club Europe will be fully booked for all of March 2025, as this route earns 160 tier points return for around £200 in a sale.)

The change will also align BAEC with Iberia Plus, and should also simplify the IT backend required to make it all work if the programmes are moved to the same platform.

The good news is that BA is implementing a year-long transition period. This is a fair way of moving to the new system and allows everyone to earn status under both the new and existing system.

    A bit confused.

    At first I read it that my status that originally would end in 2025 would now end 2026, but BA’s wording in its worked examples now makes me unsure:

    Your current Tier Point Collection Year will continue as normal until 8 November 2024
    Your next collection period will be 9 November 2024 – 31 March 2025
    Tier Point Adjustment: we’ll add on any Tier Points you earn during 1 April – 8 November 2024 to work out your Tier status from 1 April 2025
    Any Tier status you receive during the transition period will expire on 30 April 2026

    I did a TP run at the end of last year to get two years of status – so, in old BAEC account terms, all of this year 2024 and all of 2025.

    I have 600+ points sitting in my account at the moment, and in the old BAEC world, that would have given me silver status until the end of 2025.

    BA’s wording now seems to suggest it could disregard these TP, as it states any tier points earned during 1st April – 8 November will be used to work out status – it says nothing about existing points earned prior to this period.

    So what about those tier points earned before this period and sitting in my account?

    Are they a) disregarded as they are not earned 1st April 2024 to 8th November 2024, or b) do they simply mean that any points accumulated will be counted from 1st April onwards?

    Or have I misread/misunderstood this element?

      They count towards the current system and status based on your 8/11/24 year as normal.

      But any earned from 1/4/24 will also count in your ‘new” collection year of 1/4/24-31/3/25

      I’m in exactly the same position with an 8 Nov collection year end. I’ve already requalified for silver until 31/12/25 due to flights taken in Jan 2024. I won’t be earning 600+ TP in the period 01/04/24-31/03/25. According to the faqs it looks like I’ll drop to bronze from 01/05/25 and lose 8 months of silver status next year

    From the perspective of an individual, I disagree with the suggestion that this change amounts to a simplification.

    The system will be exactly the same – not more or less simple. There will just have been an arbitrary change to the relevant dates, potentially leading to some unfairness in the transition.

    From the perspective of BA it IS a simplication.

        My partner and I have flown exactly the same flights together for years but ended up with different BA status levels, so at least this will be resolved in the future.

    I think (?) I may have struck lucky for once, inasmuch as there’s no real change for me. My tier point year end is 8th April 2024 and my next ‘going for 2 years of gold’ tier point run starts on 9th April. So, I am neither better nor worse off unless I squeeze in a few extra points between 1st and 8th April 2024 – don’t think so!

      I have the same year end. My reading is that we lose one month of Gold, but we do seem to have got off lightly.

    @Rob – so you suggest that BA is now potentially considering a revenue based TP earning model? Eventually then from 2026? And this might be the reason why they want to reset all TPs and earning by that date?

      They have already said (see Capital Markets Day) that there would be ‘elite status parity’ between BA and IB, so whatever scheme is used it will be shared by both airlines.

      The only reason to stay as they are is that Lufthansa has just moved to the BA model, which may make BA wonder why they want to move away from it. Dumping the leisure market (which is what revenue based status effectively means) is also, on paper, exceptionally dumb if business class business travel doesn’t return.

      Qatar Airways Privilege Club already operates a similar model, the more cash you spend on your tickets, the quicker you’ll achieve status, so it’ll almost certainly be only a matter of time before just about all airline programs use this type of earning structure

    My current status renews on 9 March and I have a few flights and hols which will see me as Gold which I would expect to retain – under current system- until April 26.
    Not sure if I’m going to lose out on the 480tps I’m going to earn in late March 24 as BA state they are only looking at points earned from 1 April 24-31March 25 to determine status from 2025 in which case I’ll end up as silver. So lose a year of Gold. Hoping I’ve read this totally wrong!

      We discussed this earlier, I am in the same situation. Noone knows really. But I would argue, that they need to fulfill their contractual obligations at least for flights booked before the changes came into place. Same is true for Avios earning.

      You’re not losing out. If you requalify for Gold before 31st March 2024 you will retain your status under the existing rules – to April 2026.

        But I’m not re qualifying! I’ll get gold between 9 March 24 and August 24. Under current rules I’d be gold for the rest of my year and the following year ( which would end on 8 March 26) however 480 tps will be earned between 9-31 March 24. Will these be discounted? And I’ll end up silver 25-26?

    Not sure if anyone else has commented on this, but it’s going to make end-of-year TP runs more expensive: right now, they’re spread out over the year; after this they’ll be concentrated in Feb/Mar, which means extra demand on favourite routes, higher fares, etc.

    I have to ask myself: did that play into the calculation here?

    I will retain Silver in November so assume [in some way] I will retain Silver for next year? Surely it won’t end in April?

      Anyone who earns status between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025 will retain that status until 30th April 2026.
