News in brief:

Conrad Singapore Orchard hotel now open

Hilton has opened the Conrad Singapore Orchard hotel. The website is here.

Set on Orchard Road, this is a full top-to-toe refurbishment of the old Regent Singapore. IHG is probably jealous that, having bought Regent, it missed out on the chance to retain what looks like a lovely property.

The 10 restaurants and bars, including Michelin-starred restaurant Summer Palace, have been open since last year but you can now stay the night too. A picture of the lobby is below.

There are 445 ‘newly imagined’ guest rooms which take their design cue from the nearby Botanical Garden. To quote:

“Floor-to-ceiling windows, complemented by plantation shutters, invite nature from the outdoors in. The spaces have been designed using serene, natural tones in sand, cream, and muted greens, accented by signature palm motifs and potted tropical trees.”

There is also an outdoor pool and an Executive Lounge.

According to the website, there is an extra incentive to book. You will earn an additional 5,000 Hilton Honors Points per stay if you book by 30th April. Your stay can be at any point up to 30th June.

Hilton launches its latest brand – LivSmart Studios

Hilton has launched its 22nd brand – LivSmart Studios.

(The chain really needs to pull its finger out. Just 22 brands? Come on! Marriott is now at 31 and Accor is at 42.)

It is aimed at the long stay market, and at a lower price point than existing Hilton long stay brands. We don’t see any of Hilton’s long stay brands in the UK, and given that features of LivSmart include ‘outdoor patios with grills’ and ‘a communal fire pit’ I doubt we can expect LivSmart either.

All suites will have a fully equipped kitchen including a full size fridge, dishwasher, microwave and two ring cooking surface.

Weirdly, the lobby is described as ‘hyper functional’. The brand standard is that there must be a clear line of sight from the front desk to the fitness and guest laundry areas (no idea why!). All sites will feature a ‘simple retail market’.

The first one will open in Kokomo, Indiana if you are passing through at any point.

The Conrad has been desperately in need of a refurb but I wouldn’t stay there given the noisy location and pretentious layout.

  • Paul says:

I read the other day that a refit of a cruise liner worked out at $300,000 per berth. This got me wondering, does anyone know the fit out cost of a hotel room?
I imagine the bed is a major component , especially high end hotels. I also imagine HI express and premier in are daily cheap hiven pre fab nature of build. But what does it cost z Conrad, intercontinental etc to fit out a basic room

    • CamFlyer says:

Perhaps someone who is heading out on the BA flight CVG (following up on the article a few weeks back) will post a report.

[CVG is the closest BA nonstop destination to Kokomo]

      • CamFlyer says:

This was supposed to be in response to Stu P’s comment regarding Kokomo.

    • Ken says:

At $300k per berth it would be cheaper to buy & fit a brand new ship !

Even $300k per cabin sounds way too high.

What do we mean by re-fit ?

How old is the ship, what are the requirements?

Can range from a refresh that might take 8 weeks to changes to the hull, conversion to hybrid power system, boilers etc that would take a year.

  • Stu p says:

Kokomo? That’s where you wanna go!

  • Michael C says:

It’s very early days, of course, but reviews for the Conrad have so far been what is politely known as “mixed”!
Hope it settles down as I have very fond memories of this property – just down the road from my old office, and known at the time as Regent-Four Seasons. Location and bones of the building are great.

  • Graviation says:

I booked the Conrad about a fortnight ago, as soon as it became available again. A good choice for those into architecture AND points! It’ll be another hotel by the late John Portman to tick off my list; I’m a big admirer of his hotel architecture. He also did the three in Marina Square, as well as the Bonaventure in LA, Marriott Marquis in Times Square and many others. I don’t recall receiving the 5k points offer though, so will have to check.

  • AlanC says:

Might give the Conrad a go.
Going ex Dub on Etihad Feb school week and IHG award nights are zero that week.

  • BBbetter says:

The hotel is run by the same group who run the Conrad centennial, making it easy for them to use the brand again, though am sure Hilton would’ve preferred another sub-brand.

  • Panda Mick says:

I’ve stayed at the Conrad Centennial near Marina Square a few times (will be there again in April). Location is great (for me), it’s quiet, right by the MRT, has a great executive lounge and gym, and they let me check in at around 9.30am every time (time of the SQ flight from LHR).

Has an amazing bar and small outside area too 🙂

But, there’s obviously some really swanky place nearby as there’s always a row of McClarens, ferrari, etc, outside

The rooms are lovely too. I have genuinely no complaints about the hotel.

Sadly, Orchard Rd is just too far from work to justify 🙁

    • Qrfan says:

100% agree. We loved our stay at the Centennial too. Would definitely stay there again whenever we go back.

    • smblcklck says:

Stayed in November I thought it was looking a little tired tbh. The bar is anything but amazing, most of the public areas feel like they are untouched from the day it opened.

Agree that the exec lounge and staff are very good though.

    • Michael C says:

Is that the bar with the DIY gin tonic menus? I loved that!
They also kindly set up a small room for us right next to the exec. lounge to cater for the kids.
Agree about the surreal cars outside!
Oh, and they have ice cream in the breakfast buffet.
