Three bits of UK airport lounge news:

The No1 Lounge at Luton Airport is ready to go

If all goes to plan, the new No1 Lounge at Luton Airport opens tomorrow. The website is here.

Rhys got a sneak peak yesterday. A lot has changed since the Clubrooms days, with the space fully ripped out and redone.

It MAY be open today as a soft launch. If you are flying from Luton today it is worth having a look, especially later in the day. Walk through the shopping area to the end (the Aspire lounge will be on the left) and there is a corridor to your left. The lounge is there.

The photo below is how the Clubrooms lounge looked, pre pandemic.

The existing Aspire lounge was due to close at the end of business today. It will reopen as a My Lounge in July.

The new No1 Lounge is substantially smaller than Aspire. Until both lounges are running in tandem in July, I strongly suggest paying £6 to reserve a slot if you have a Priority Passthe link is here.

You can book a visit for cash here. It will be open from 4.30am to 8.30pm.

No1 Lounge Luton Airport

The Clubrooms lounge at London Gatwick South is back

I’m not sure what took them so long, but No1 Lounges reopened its Clubrooms premium lounge in London Gatwick’s South Terminal (the BA terminal) this week.

It is in the same spot as the No1 Lounge, on the upper level. Once you have cleared security – and this goes for all of the Gatwick South lounges – do NOT head down the escalator. Take the doorway to the left and you are fed directly onto the mezzanine.

We have never reviewed this lounge in detail (I was only there once, in 2015, on a pre-opening tour) so we need to get down there.

If you have a Priority Pass there is a £15 upgrade fee for Clubrooms. You can reserve a spot in advance here.

You can find out more, and book for cash, on the lounge website here. It is open from 7am to 8pm.

Spitfire Lounge Southampton Airport

The lounge at Southampton Airport is reopening

Another airport which has not been in a rush to fully reopen its lounge is Southampton.

When it first reopened post-pandemic it was only open around the handful of British Airways flights per week.

The Spitfire Lounge has been fully closed for a while but reopens on 16th December. I’m not sure what work has been done in the interim.

The good news is that it will now be open seven days per week. It will be open from 5am to 5pm.

Our last review of The Spitfire Lounge is here but we have been invited down to have a fresh look. Keep an eye on HfP in January.

Southampton Airport has big growth plans. The new runway extension allows the short-haul aircraft used by easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair to land. Until earlier this year it was restricted to propeller and smaller (BA Cityflyer-style) jet aircraft only.

You can find out more, and book for cash, on the airport website here.

  • Stuart says:

Are there any news regarding new airlines/routes at Southampton? Please HfP, not just BA Cityflyer routes. News seems to be zero since the runway extension. Would EasyJet move in or Ryanair relocate from Bournemouth since Southampton serves a larger catchment area (lots of urban sprawl eastwards to Portsmouth and all in between) and has two motorways M27/M3 and the mainline train for both Waterloo and Cross-Country and is an quick one-stop to Southampton Central for the east and west trains (they do exist). It will surprise many here that Southampton should serve more than those travelling down from London.
My elderly parents much preferred Southampton for a Channel Island trip as the airport is small and quiet, so less stressful than Gatwick, although the latter is a direct train for them versus a change at Southampton Central (they’re not HfP-types so BAEC stuff is irrelevant to them).

    • Martin says:

Are you in the marketing department for Southampton Airport??

      • Nick says:

Southampton is a tin shed with a tiny runway to one side and a railway to the other. That’s not a bad thing though… for Channel Island flights especially it’s a spectacularly easy way to go (and you get great views of the south coast and IOW on the short flight).

It remains to be seen how efficient they can keep their tin shed once they have A319-size aircraft there heading to Spain, etc. More than one at a time and it’ll be hell on earth.

The lounge is lovely though, a true highlight in UK lounges. I hope they’ve kept the old style and ethos from pre-covid – the other best lounge (Northern Lights in ABZ) has lost most of theirs as they’ve tried to cut costs.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

I’m sure HfP will happily report new routes and / or new airlines ex SOU when such things are announced!

    • zapato1060 says:

Rob has approved new routes as we speak.

    • Richie says:

easyJet have already put their SOU flights on sale.

    • dave says:

Bournemouth airport is far better than Southampton, just terrible transport links. I cant imagine ryanair moving away from it, infact EasyJet are just testing the waters there as well as Southampton

      • ADS says:

I would have thought that both EasyJet and Ryanair could try out some Southampton routes using aircraft based on the continent (or W routings from Gatwick for example) to see how they perform

As a London resident, I’d love to see more SOU route options

    • Roger W says:

Great airport! Currently in France at the moment having flown from Southampton last Saturday on an almost full EZ flight. Stewardess informed me they had 7 passengers enroute from GVA outbound.

  • JDB says:

Having recently sold its LHR stake, Ferrovial has got plenty of cash to invest in SOU.

  • Jamal Ajjane says:

I traveled yesterday from London Gatwick south terminal and I was refused entry to No1 lounge and the reason they gave they only accepting people with reservations which incur a fee , also there was no queues. According to the manager I spoke to was not helpful, it doesn’t matter wether you have an AMX platinum card or priority pass they only accepting people with reservations and told me to go to aspire lounge.

  • Terri says:

Travelling from Luton tomorrow with a Dragonpass but the No1 lounge isnt on the drop down to book.

    • Rob says:

Weird. If you select Priority Pass it DOES show for reservation, but not DragonPass. Reckon you can book it as a PP?

  • Terri says:

I did a walk up and no, Dragonpass is bot accepted.

  • David Starkie says:

I agree with Stuart about SOU. It is great to use. However, the management need to improve the website. Difficult to find out where you can currently fly to/from.
