A valuable benefit that comes with The Platinum Card from American Express is £300 of annual dining credit. It makes a big dint in the annual membership fee.

Each calendar year – so it resets on 1st January – you receive:

  • £150 to spend in 180 or so UK restaurants
  • £150 to spend in 1,000+ international restaurants

You can spend the money over multiple visits to multiple restaurants if you wish. It doesn’t need to be spent in one go.

One of the most common questions asked in our forum is whether the £150 UK Platinum Dining credit can be used for a restaurant gift card. This is a handy way of using your credit if you don’t think you can make it to a participating restaurant before 31st December.

If you mean ‘a restaurant gift card’ you can order online then the answer is No.

However, if you want to use your £150 of UK Platinum Dining credit for a meal to enjoy next year, the most popular option is a gift card for ‘The Ivy’ group of restaurants.

You must buy ‘The Ivy’ gift cards in person to trigger the £150 Platinum dining credit. Do not buy them online because the dining credit won’t trigger.

You can learn more on the giftcard website here but remember – to get the £150 Platinum Dining credit to pay out, you must buy it in a participating branch of ‘The Ivy’.

PS. Remember that reader Tim has created an interactive map of restaurants where the Amex Platinum £150 dining credit can be used. Check it out here.

Ivy gift card worked fine for me in Birmingham. Had to pay for the gift card separately at the desk. I received confirmation emails from Amex before I had left the restaurant.

  • Simon says:

Any idea by when The Ivy gift card needs to be purchased to be part of this offer? Wondering about buying on 1 Jan… thanks.

I don’t know that it ends 31/12 but a) that’s when your £150 expires and b) it’s logical as you can redeem from 2 Jan.

          Rob, all,
I contacted The Ivy and they confirmed it runs to the end of the month. (I have already used this year’s credit but was thinking of banking next year’s in early January before giving up the card before it renews in Q1.)

Lunch booked at the Ivy on Saturday and will top up to hit the £150 bill mark.

I also bought a load of HN confectionary online to trigger the £50 credit too. Fancy salted caramel biccies, strawberry macaroons amongst others. Pricey and quality is a bit meh but the packaging is pretty and the delivery was quick. It has been a week since the purchase and no Amex email or notification advising of the successful tracking, and online chat says to allow 150 days per their T&Cs.

    • Adam says:

I didn’t get Amex email for my HN credit, but credit still appeared within a few days of delivery arriving.

  • Alex says:

I was saving my dining credit to use at the Grove in Watford and decided to just check to see if any other options were added to the dining map only to find the Grove has been removed, so what I’m saying is best to double check before rocking up even if your chosen restaurant was on the list last time you looked.

Question about “The Ivy” gift card.
I think the manager at the Victoria Ivy did not understand me and gave me a normal £100 voucher. Does anybody know if this voucher supposed to have a spesific design?
He used same menus to create £100 and £50 vouchers and manually entered the values.

  • Ian says:

Just be aware that not all ivy locations are included.

    Ivy Exeter isn’t for example.

  • Sididdly says:

I’ve been to The Ivy Tower Bridge and The Ivy City over the past two days and both said that the £100 Champagne offer is only available online. Is this the case? I had about £80 credit on the dining offer so just gave up and bought a regular gift card for that value.

    • Rowan says:

I was told the same at Ivy Winchester today that this specific Champagne offer is only available to buy Online

    • C says:

I thought as much hence me asking the question on page 2 which was met with a slightly sarcastic reply from Rob

      • Rob says:

People have been able to buy them, hence the article. I don’t know if its a limited supply or they weren’t sent to all restaurants or if the restaurant staff are simply ill-informed.

        • CB24 says:

How do we actually know if we’ve bought the ‘right’ kind of voucher? I had a similar experience to Sididdly with staff in restaurant seemingly not knowing much about this offer. Upon further discussion, they reassured me that the offer would be honoured – but I’m beginning to wonder whether that’ll stick come actual attempt to use this next year.
If people have successfully booked the right voucher in store, can they let us know if there is anything distinctive on the card for example, that confirms this, please?

          • Sididdly says:

The two restaurants I went in both seemed very confident and knowledgable about the voucher. They didn’t appear to be just winging it with a response.

          • Shamrock says:

Good question. I will be visiting the St Paul’s Ivy tomorrow and would be good to know I’m getting the right voucher? Wouldn’t buy otherwise.

        • fede says:

it would be good to know which ivy you visited so other can go to that one to get the gift card?

  • Mark says:

My dining credit expires December 2024, can you please explain what resets in January?

    • Rob says:

We don’t know what happens in 2025 but you get a fresh £150 on 1/1/24.
