A valuable benefit that comes with The Platinum Card from American Express is £300 of annual dining credit. It makes a big dint in the annual membership fee.

Each calendar year – so it resets on 1st January – you receive:

  • £150 to spend in 180 or so UK restaurants
  • £150 to spend in 1,000+ international restaurants

You can spend the money over multiple visits to multiple restaurants if you wish. It doesn’t need to be spent in one go.

One of the most common questions asked in our forum is whether the £150 UK Platinum Dining credit can be used for a restaurant gift card. This is a handy way of using your credit if you don’t think you can make it to a participating restaurant before 31st December.

If you mean ‘a restaurant gift card’ you can order online then the answer is No.

However, if you want to use your £150 of UK Platinum Dining credit for a meal to enjoy next year, the most popular option is a gift card for ‘The Ivy’ group of restaurants.

You must buy ‘The Ivy’ gift cards in person to trigger the £150 Platinum dining credit. Do not buy them online because the dining credit won’t trigger.

You can learn more on the giftcard website here but remember – to get the £150 Platinum Dining credit to pay out, you must buy it in a participating branch of ‘The Ivy’.

PS. Remember that reader Tim has created an interactive map of restaurants where the Amex Platinum £150 dining credit can be used. Check it out here.

Regarding the buying of Hilton points. Last night I saw a comment somewhere, thought it was this article but must have been somewhere else, that somebody was facing a currency conversion rip-off as the site detected they are in the UK and was marking up the price by 4.1%.

That is a pet hate of mine, and so I conducted a bit of quick research. I can confirm the following, for anybody facing that predicament:
    1. Whether it comes up in points or dollars has nothing to do with your IP address.
    2. To be offered the actual price in USD instead of marked-up GBP, perform the following in this order: enter a US address, remove your UK address, sign out, delete all Hilton cookies, sign back in.

Thanks, I spotted the FX was pretty off the other day and tried changing to a US IP but no luck. Will try the above

As the Hilton points offer is (now) priced in GBP is it possible to pay on my Hilton Honors Barclaycard c/card ? If so ,what would the implications be regarding the transaction? Would it be classed as a ‘cash’ transaction and /or be requiring a currency conversion fee

Has anyone heard anything about Loganair? Things OK there? Will they make it through the winter?

  • Andrew says:

Why no Amex restaurants in Denmark, Ireland or Slovenia.. countries I’m visiting in the next 12 months

Going to Trieste as well but the only restaurant is a Michelin 2 star… maybe the £150 makes it semi-affordable…

  • C says:

Can you buy the gift card at an ivy restaurant to trigger the dining credit and get the free champagne or is it only the online voucher that comes with the champagne?

    • Rob says:

You can buy it in a restaurant. We wouldn’t have written the article otherwise as there wouldn’t have been much point 🙂

  • dave says:

So in effect could I go and buy a £150 ivy gift card in store and book a visit in March and use both the voucher and next years credit for £300 savings and a bottle of champange?
