Save 33% on (almost) all reward flights in Virgin Atlantic’s Black Friday reward seat sale

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Red have teamed up to offer a 33% discount on ALL Virgin Atlantic destinations when you travel before 30th September 2024.

Premium and Upper Class flights are included.

‘2 for 1’ bookings made using a Virgin Atlantic credit card voucher are included.

It appears, based on feedback, that upgrades are not included.

Taxes and fees are unchanged and remain high, with an Upper Class redemption to New York pricing at around 63,300 Virgin Points + £996 off-peak. The 33% reduction in points from the usual 95,000 does take the edge off.

You need to book by midnight on Monday 27th November, departing before 30th September 2024. If your return flight is after 30th September 2024, the discount will only apply to your outbound flight.

The offer does not apply to the ‘we will open up any seat, any flight for double points for Gold members’ benefit.

Where can you go?

To give Virgin Atlantic credit, this sale includes all routes, all classes and (virtually) all dates. The only flights you can’t book are for those few days in October 2024 which are currently available.

The list of current routes (we think) is in the pricing chart below. These are all from Heathrow.

From Manchester you have:

  • New York
  • Atlanta
  • Orlando
  • Barbados (seasonal)
  • Las Vegas (launching in 2024)

There is also Edinburgh to Orlando which operates in Summer-only.

Virgin Atlantic now guarantees that 12 seats are opened to redemption on every flight – two in Upper Class, two in Premium and eight in Economy Classic. Obviously some of these may already have gone, as some of these flights have been on sale for almost a year.

Virgin Atlantic redemptions now earn tier points

Don’t forget that, unlike almost any other airline, redemptions on Virgin Atlantic earn you tier points.

On redemption flights, you will usually earn the following:

  • Economy: 25 tier points each way
  • Premium: 50 tier points each way
  • Upper Class: 100 tier points each way

You don’t earn Virgin Points on reward tickets, for obvious reasons!

You can learn about tier points on this page of the Virgin Atlantic website.

What can you expect flying Virgin Atlantic?

Virgin Atlantic now flies three different Upper Class seats. We have reviewed them all:

In addition to the usual amenities you’d expect form a business class flight, Virgin Atlantic aircraft also feature a bar or social space for Upper Class passengers – a unique feature that only the Middle Eastern airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways usually offer.

You’ll also get access to the impressive Virgin Clubhouse at Heathrow, which we’ve reviewed here.

You can read our review of Premium on Virgin Atlantic here.

Conclusion

Virgin Atlantic has launched a major reward flight sale. What’s important is that ALL routes and ALL classes are included.

Economy redemptions ticketing into Economy Classic with 23kg checked baggage allowance.

Whilst you can’t get a 33% refund on an existing booking, if you called up and paid the £30 change fee to move your outbound or inbound flight the whole trip should reprice at the lower rate. You could also cancel completely and rebook if seats are available. Be wary of doing this if you booked a long time ago when taxes are lower, as you would be liable for the current rate.

You need to book by Monday 27th November, for flights departing before 30th September 2024.

The savings should be live on the Virgin Atlantic website here – although we wrote this last night so we are trusting Virgin Atlantic to have done it. Just enter your destination and dates. To find reward flights, simply click ‘Advanced’ and select ‘Points’.

  • jeremy i says:

Sorry If Im being dumb – i got an email from BA a couple of days ago offering 40% off london city economy redemptions. how comes that isnt being mentioned? thanks everyone

    • Rob says:

They didn’t send us anything about it, and the ‘up to’ bit seems to be doing a lot of hard lifting.

      • jjoohhnn says:

Doesn’t seem to be heavily pushed. It’s on the front page of their website after you login. BA Holidays is ‘up to £300’. Presumably there’s a lot of fluff in that ‘up to’ also!

  • Grimz says:

is it worth cancelling an existing booking and rebooking same flights? The are available

    • Rob says:

Cancelling with be £30 (?) each. Taxes may have changed so check. Work out what you’ll save and do the maths.

      • Grimz says:

Just rebooked and it cost me £30 to cancel existing booking and I saved around 19k virgin points. Happy with that

  • RJ says:

Just to confirm… if a PE reward ticket is upgraded using a voucher to J/Business, is lounge access included at LHR? Cheers

  • Mark Z says:

Can you use the upgrade voucher for this offer? If so, how does the discount work, 30% off on top of the 50% off points with upgrade credit card voucher?

    • Ian says:

Yes – Just booked London to Shanghai return in Upper using a credit card voucher. So 30k points + £581. Seems a pretty good deal / use of points to me.

      • Ian says:

Sorry – not 50% off with the voucher. You are charged the points for the class below eg. Premium economy if booking Upper. And 30% off usual rate with this promo. Upper taxes apply.

        • Mark Z says:

still an excellent deal! thank you

        • HampshireHog says:

          So 63k off peak return?

          • Ian says:

I paid 30k points off peak return using the credit card update voucher.

So a third off the base 45k return points for Premium Economy, with the voucher doing the upgrade to upper. £581 taxes / charges.

      • Bervios says:

Thanks for the inspiration Ian, Shanghai an excellent deal. Used two vouchers and 60K points + £1163 total for 2 in upper class return in May – fairly easy to travel
        onwards from there .

  • Dave Hughes says:

i still dont see great value here , im praying for the virgin voyages deal again and im gonna burn the 160k points on that and give up with virgin points….

    • LittleNick says:

They need to do something about carrier surcharges on redemptions, still value to be had on Skyteam flights

  • joe says:

Is there any way to reduce the surcharges to USA like starting outside UK ?

    • Rob says:

Not if you want to combine it with the sale.

Obviously you can fly cheaper by using KLM or Air France on Virgin Points.

  • MrSJ says:

Looks like they’ve upped the price of the taxes (AGAIN) though…

    • Mikee says:

Yep….doesn’t seem logical beased on distance either. They’ve doubled the surcharge from £45 to £99 for LHR-MIA and LHR-ATL 1-way in Y. MCO remains at £45 which is a very similar distance to ATL and MIA. IAD and JFK remain at £45.
This makes the reduction in miles even less worthwhile for MIA and ATL routes.

    • NorthernLass says:

Crazy surcharges. I was planning to book MAN-MCO in UC for next year but currently considering changing strategy to use the points on a cruise if that comes up again, and use EI for flights (or BA RFS if we can face the LHR transit!)

  • Peter Feeney says:

Ben reports that VA say that offer is not available for upgrades but original article says it is – can we clarify please?

    • Rob says:

May not be. We wrote this article yesterday based on a few details supplied by the airline. Historically upgrades have been included when Virgin has run these offers so we assumed they would be again. Apologies if this is not correct.

      • Robbie says:

Took a bit of faff with VA over the phone as the discount didn’t automatically apply, but they managed to manually apply the 33% off for a points upgrade from PE to Upper. Not sure if this is officially correct or if the person I spoke to just liked me 🙂

    • Peter Feeney says:

Have just upgraded using points at the reduced rate, so can confirm original article correct – thanks for listing it!
