News in brief:

Hyatt Place to open near Paddington next year

A new Hyatt hotel has quietly appeared on the Hyatt website – Hyatt Place London Paddington.

The website is here.

From the address, it seems to be a conversion of the Norfolk Plaza Hotel on Norfolk Square.

The opening date is shown as 1st July 2024. We can only hope that the hotel is undergoing substantial refurbishment because, as the picture below shows, it looks a little scary in its current incarnation:

Marriott’s AC Hotels opens in Glasgow

Talking of hotels appearing without fanfare, AC Hotel Glasgow is now open.

AC Hotels was originally a Spanish mid-range hotel brand which Marriott acquired a few years ago. My impression is that it sits somewhere between (to use IHG comparisons) Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza

The hotel looks promising, notionally a four star and well situated next to George Square. It is primarily a new build property but incorporates the 120 year-old former Parish Halls.

You can find out more on the Marriott website here.

Malmaison flash sale – from £85 with £50 F&B credit

Boutique hotel chain Malmaison is running a very interesting winter flash salesee here.

The blurb says that rooms start from £100 per night (£160 in London) although I found some dates in Leeds at £85. The key thing is that all sale rooms include a £50 credit towards dinner (not breakfast or lunch) in the Mal bar and grill.

All of their UK hotels are taking part. Saturday nights are excluded except for London, Aberdeen, Cheltenham and Reading.

Sale rooms must be pre-paid and cannot be amended.

You can stay between 22nd December 2023 and 9th April 2024.

You must book by Friday 24th November. The offer will NOT be running over the weekend into Cyber Monday.

PS. This offer may (or may not, as it is prepaid) trigger the current American Express / Malmaison cashback offer we covered here

PPS. Sister brand Hotel du Vin has a similar offer – see here – and is also in an Amex cashback offer at the moment

  • Ben says:

Hotel Du Vin also included, but starting at £145 for two with the £50

  • BJ says:

Are these Malmaison rates prepaid, and will booking via the web for next year trigger the current amex offer?

    • Rob says:

Prepaid yes, Amex offer – no idea. Malmaison is small and not a franchise business so may charge prepays at HQ.

      • BJ says:

That’s what I was thinking but I may call a hotel or two to check if I can book these rates over the phone and have them charged then and there. I think the amex offer only has a few days left.

I had to click through to see if that photo was truly used on the Hyatt website. What a dreadful dated design.

  • Gordon says:

I get regular emails from Hyatt promoting their newly acquired refurbished secrets resorts opening in the Caribbean and Mexico, they appear to be investing heavily after their purchase of the Apple leisure group.

I booked the AC Glasgow for 2-Dec some months back at 15k points. Will report back what I find. First time staying in an AC.

      I’ve stayed at a couple of ac’s

They are quite nice, the one in Inverness is very nice and so are both ac’s In València.

I’d argue with rob though on the scale of placement, I’d put them above crowne plaza hotels, unless you’re looking for a club lounge, then slightly below.
But if you can get club lounge access, then I’d say they are definitely above crowne plaza in quality.

+1 for the one in Valencia 200m from Xàtiva metro station. Perfect location, very nice room, pleasant staff.
Unfortunately the battery in our door’s lock died during our final afternoon and they had to move us across the corridor, where we found out that some of the rooms were not quite as nice.
Reception staff assured me that I would get Marriott points, even though we were on a BA Hols deal., but we did not. I asked for some extra points as compensation for the disruption, but reception staff did not have the authority to do that. Duty manager supplied a dish of chocolates instead.
        Would happily go back.
As to scale of placement, I would put the CP in Lyon definitely above the AC Valencia, but the CP in Zürich way below + the CPs at LGW + MAN also below.

        • NorthernLass says:

CP MAN is finally available to book again from next year, I wonder if it’ll be getting a refurb beforehand!

  • NorthernLass says:

I’ve got 5 nights booked at the AC Palacio Malaga in February (thanks Amex x 2) and it looks much nicer than many CPs (also already got a 2 cat upgrade as mere Bonvoy gold).

  • Scott says:

HdV St Andrews, 4th Jan, prepaid offer rate for Junior Suite £244.
Advance room-only rate through standard booking page? £203.

Haven’t checked other hotels/dates, but are they really blatantly inflating the rates before giving back a F&B credit?

  • the_real_a says:

The 1970`s called and want their room décor back. That photo looks like something from the archives!
