Stansted Airport submits plans for new terminal extension

London Stansted airport has submitted a planning application for a major extension of its terminal.

Under the scheme, which looks as if it will be seamlessly bolted on to the existing Norman Foster-designed modular building, a three bay extension will be added to the rear of the current structure.

You can see it here:

Stansted Airport terminal expansion

Yay, more shops!

The airport is promising:

a more spacious departure lounge for passengers, including new shops, bars and restaurants, state-of-the-art check-in equipment, increased baggage system capacity and an enlarged security hall with additional space for more security lanes fitted with next-generation scanners.

There is no mention of new lounge facilities, but it would be crazy if such a substantial extension did not include replacing or adding to the existing overrun Escape Lounge. (Our last review of the Escape Lounge is here.)

Stansted has served 26 million passengers in the last 12 months and is expected to pass its pre-pandemic passenger level this year. The airport has not been a one way growth story – passenger numbers hit 23 million in 2007 but then started a sharp decline, bottoming out at 17 million in 2012.

Stansted Airport terminal expansion planned

This is very much Plan B

Back in 2018, Stansted submitted plans to build two new taxiway links to the existing runway and nine additional aircraft stands. This was designed to lift airport capacity to 274,000 aircraft movements and 43 million passengers.

The plans also included a brand new Arrivals building, separate from the existing terminal. This would have made Stansted the only UK airport to have departing and arriving passengers using separate facilities:

After an acrimonious legal battle, which involved the local authority approving and then attempting to withdraw permission, the decision was settled on appeal in favour of the airport.

However, post pandemic, it appears that the airport is no longer going forward with the taxiways, additional stands or separate Arrivals building. The airport Managing Director said yesterday that:

the terminal extension is an important part of our plans for making best use of Stansted’s existing capacity

What may be driving the extension is the move to larger aircraft by its major customers, which will increase passenger volumes without increasing aircraft movements. Ryanair, for example, has just placed a major order for Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft. With 228 seats, these have 16% more seats than the MAX 8200 aircraft currently being delivered.

Work on the extension is expected to begin next summer, subject to approvals, and take three years to complete.

Last time I went through Stansted, 5 of the 20+ security lanes were open, resulting in a wait of over an hour. What’s the point of adding more lanes if they don’t staff the ones they already have.

    • TimM says:

MAG did dismiss an awful lot of staff when the furlough scheme became less generous, something I believe they have only just recovered from. Inevitably it will be newly-trained staff on lower pay making up the numbers.

An alternative hypothesis is that MAG are preparing the airport for sale. It is nominally a ‘London airport’ and it may attract a foreign purchaser like English football clubs do.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Tbh the latest scanners which mean you can leave all your liquids etc in the veg really speed things up. The wait is mostly because some flyers are so rubbish at preparing they leave items they know they must take out in the bottom of bags etc

      • Peter K says:

Personally I rarely find anyone leaves *all* their liquids in the veg, so I’m not sure the new scanners will help much 😁

  • Richard says:

Taking a close look at the plans, the train between the satellites is going, replaced with walkways. You can see the provision of two new ones in the top-right corner, and if your eyesight is very good, you can pick out the directional arrows and split level, separating arriving and departing passengers.

What’s interesting there is the pier at the front seemingly has both arriving and departing passengers on a single level unlike the two further back. So presumably you then end up with some ridiculous door shuffling antics like I think they had in LHR t1 before they shut it down, having to hold up entire passenger flows to board a plane.

      • Rhys says:

Not sure about that – that front pier already exists, the only pier serviced by train was at the far back in the illustration, I believe? Probably just an unclear drawing.

        • Dubious says:

Looking a bit closer still and you can see that the closet pier has a glass wall to keep departing and arriving passengers segregated. No need for any crystal maze games.

          • The real Swiss Tony says:

Apologies, I thought it was the front-most pier which was connected by train. I’ve only ever flown domestic from STN (well in the last 40 yrs anyway) which was always the small pier straight ahead from departures. (middle one).

And yes I see the glass wall in the middle but both arriving & departing pax are on a single level. I guess with no airbridges to worry about you can decant people down another level and segregate at that point.

  • r* says:

Wonder if they will build extra toilets considering the existing ones always have queues out of the door.

    • John says:

Only if they can monetise the floor space. Pay to piss, perhaps.

  • TGLoyalty says:

Have to say my recent experience of Stansted departure was very good BUT it was extremely busy airside.

  • Chris W says:

I’m stunned Emirates haven’t opened their own lounge there now they have double daily 777 flights with their very best first class product.

  • vlcnc says:

Nothing is worth doing at that airport without getting rid of MAG first. Worst major airport operator hands down in this country.

    • Alex says:

Imagine having to use MAN regularly and knowing you’ll never be free of them…

  • yorkieflyer says:

Can you imagine the disruption while these works are in progress

    • The real Swiss Tony says:

More to the point, would anyone be able to tell the difference….

  • Matarredonda says:

Will make a horrendous airport even worse while these works go on.
Me thinks should be avoided once they start.
