Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Last day to convert Tesco Clubcard vouchers before devaluation

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you have a Tesco Clubcard account, you should have had an email about a substantial devaluation of Clubcard partner rewards.

From 14th June, the conversion rate for all partner rewards drops from 3x face value to 2x.

This means, for example, that £10 of Tesco Clubcard points will only get you £20 of Hotels.com credit instead of the current £30.

Tesco Clubcard to Virgin Atlantic conversion rate cut

TODAY (Tuesday) is your last day to convert your vouchers for a partner reward and get 3x face value.

To soften the blow slightly, any Tesco Clubcard vouchers you redeem today for partner vouchers will be valid for 12 months instead of the usual six months. The idea is that you can cash in now and think later about what you will use them for.

With Avios and Hilton Hotels gone as Clubcard partners, the scheme has become less relevant for HfP readers. We wrote this detailed article here about the best travel-related partner offers still available.

What about transfers to Virgin Points?

Whilst Avios withdrew from Clubcard in early 2021, Virgin Points has (and will continue to be) a Tesco Clubcard partner.

Manual transfers from Tesco Clubcard to Virgin Flying Club will drop tomorrow from 100 Clubcard points = 250 Virgin Points to 100 Clubcard points = 200 Virgin Points.

However, if you are on auto-conversion, you will still receive the old rate on your July conversion. The rate will only reduce with the October conversion.

The ratio between Virgin Points and other redemptions has improved

Whilst you are clearly getting fewer Virgin Points for every £1 of Tesco Clubcard vouchers you redeem, Virgin Points are – proportionately – going to be better value.

Here’s an example. At the moment, 100 Clubcard points gets you £3 of partner vouchers or 250 Virgin Points. You are effectively ‘paying’ 1.2p per Clubcard point, because you are giving up £3 of partner vouchers.

Following the change, 100 Clubcard points gets you £2 of partner vouchers or 200 Virgin Points. You are now effectively ‘paying’ just 1p per Virgin Point.

If you didn’t previously consider Virgin Points to be good value compared to other Clubcard redemptions, you may want to think again.

If you want to earn more Virgin Points, our review of the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Mastercard credit card is here (30,000 bonus points TODAY ONLY – it drops back to 15,000 points tomorrow) and our review of the free Virgin Atlantic Reward Mastercard credit card is here.

  • His Holyness says:

After a railcard redemption I couldn’t see anything else we would use, so cashed the lot out (£290) to Virgin. I hope that was a good idea…

We seem to have a lot of cards all over the place, are they good at merging them all into one?

    • Froggee says:

Well if it was a dumb idea, I did the same thing with my £181.50 so me dumb too. Considered Hotels.com for some of it to replace points bookings at Heathrow but I want flexibility for when BA decides to move my flight to T5 so gave up.

  • ukpolak says:

After swapping the best part of £200 vouchers for prezzo, zizzi and our local pub (all great with young kids), I now find myself in a hurry to get through them.

A local waitress at prezzo said that staff found out on the morning of the last mass closure. She was redeployed but a real risk they too go out of business / do another big cull with very limited notice.

And I remember the days when we’d get 4x their value at Goldsmiths through these fancy paper vouchers, and we were able to purchase expensive luxury watches hah!

Seeing my purchase suggestions online change as my life changed (do you need any nappies, baby food) etc showed just how much they were on top of their data analytics game back in the day.

    So long Tesco!!

    • Richie says:

Yep, I got a lovely watch from Goldsmiths. I don’t shop at Tesco anymore.

  • masaccio says:

Is there a better way to earn Avios on fuel? I’m still filling up at Tesco, scanning my clubcard and paying with BAPP. Also has the benefit that near me, Tesco is always the cheapest.

    • Rob says:

Esso to earn Nectar, or BP to earn BP meRewards to convert.

      • masaccio says:

Ta. My maths says 100 litres of Tesco fuel is now worth 100 Virgin points versus 300 nectar points at Esso (187 Avios). I still haven’t used them since I downloaded the QR code app so I guess there’s a bonus too.

BP is always 3-4p a litre more near me, so a worthless switch for anyone paying for their own fuel.

    • Retron says:

You can convert Clubcard points to Avios at a pretty awful rate (5000 Clubcard points > 10000 Virgin points > 10000 IHG points > 2000 Avios). Sainsbury’s and BP offer better rates for Avios, but you’d have to do the maths to work out whether it’s worth paying more for their fuel to get a few extra points!

      • masaccio says:

Aye, I’d forgotten my Clubcard points are converting to Virgin now. If I can find a convenient Esso locally I think I will switch as we don’t shop at Tesco anymore either.

    • WillPS says:

Shop by price first with fuel. If they offer rewards, take them but don’t be a slave to them.

    • zapato1060 says:

Sainsbury’s via nectar or BP rewards. I’ve got 3x BPs I cycle thru to see the best offer atm or non avios is 5% at morrisons usually via workperks.

  • ianM says:

Clubcard website very flakey right now, presumably with the volume of vouchers being exchanged, it wasn’t working very well last night and emails taking longer than usual to come through. There will be millions going to Pizzaexpress LOL.
I suspect today will be same.

  • brian says:

My Tesco app is failing to show my valid vouchers. I thought the issue had rectified itself yesterday but it’s back again. Probably too much load on a particular service with all the traffic.

  • Tracey says:

Pizza express vouchers for me, though I often forget I’ve got them.

  • GeoffreyB says:

Congratulations to the Abu Dhabi government on winning the European cup! The Saudi government will give them a run for their money in a few years under Eddie Howe!

Not looking good for the American clubs in the premier league next season!

  • Ant says:

Am I right that to use vouchers for Hotel.com you need to pick the hotel and date before converting? I thought you just received Hotel.com vouchers

    • Rob says:

Correct, you get vouchers. Vouchers give no change IIRC and do not cover VAT / taxes so pick your quantities carefully.

      • Ant says:

But do I need to decide on a specific hotel and date before converting from Tesco to Hotels?

      • idrive says:

So if i got £120 and my hotel would be £700 can i cover the cost partially with the voucher and pay the difference by card?
Is the advise of carefully choosing the voucher value for those who want to use them to cover for single nights mainly? Thanks

        • Rob says:

          Yes.

Note that you don’t get Hotels.com Rewards points (worth 10% of cost) with Tesco bookings. Best to split a stay so that some nights are almost fully covered by vouchers and cash nights are booked separately thus triggering the 10%.

          • idrive says:

Thanks Rob got it, sounds good, it may be a valid alternative to converting all to Virgin
