Review: the Qatar Airways Platinum lounge (for BA Gold) at Doha’s Hamad Airport

Late last year, Qatar Airways opened three new lounges at its home base, Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

Two of the three lounges are open to elite members of the oneworld airline alliance, with the third reserved exclusively for the lowest tier of Qatar Airways elite members.

They can be used by elites who are flying Qatar Airways or another oneworld airline in Economy or on a ‘no lounge access’ Business Light cash ticket.

There are three new lounges:

  • Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge, reviewed in this article, open to oneworld Emerald members (including British Airways Gold), with 140 seats
  • Qatar Airways Silver Lounge, open to Qatar Airways Silver members ONLY (oneworld Ruby, including British Airways Bronze, cannot enter), with 195 seats

Inside the Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge

This article is an overview of the Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge. This is based on a guided tour I was given when in the airport in February. I spent less than 10 minutes there – I had five lounges to see! – so please forgive the superficiality.

A second article here covers the Qatar Airways Gold Lounge. Whilst I also saw the Silver lounge, I won’t write about it as it only accepts Qatar Airways Privilege Club Silver members.

The key features of the Platinum Lounge are:

  • there is waiter service dining available all day
  • it is architecturally the most impressive space of the three new lounges
  • high end showers and a relaxation quiet area are available

There are two zones. As you enter, you have this – admittedly fairly functional-looking – dining area:

This is full waiter service dining, with even breakfast being a multi-course affair if that’s what you want. You need to scan a QR code to access the menu but ordering is done via a real person.

If you don’t want to eat from the menu there are also buffet items laid out:

(Note that I wasn’t on a private tour despite the lack of people in the photos – I was there during a lull in the ‘banks’ of flights which head out from Doha. A lot of flights land, a couple of hours later a lot of flights take off, there is a lull, a lot of flights land etc etc …. 24/7.)

Walk down the corridor and the lounge opens up into a large open plan area with a dramatic sloping ceiling:

…. with a smart bar:

High quality showers are available if needed (banish all thoughts of the British Airways lounge showers at Heathrow):

…. and there is a relaxation / quiet area if you need it:

Whilst I didn’t have time to try it, having looked at the menu I would put this lounge on a par with the Cathay Pacific First Class lounge at Heathrow Terminal 3 in terms of food. (The Cathay Pacific First Class lounge at Heathrow, reviewed here, is also open to oneworld Emerald / British Airways Gold flyers.)

If you don’t have access to the ‘official’ Qatar Airways business class lounges due to your cash ticket being too cheap (all Avios business class tickets get you into the ‘official’ Al Mourjan lounge) or if you are flying in economy, this is a more than adequate replacement.

Later this week I’ll look at the Qatar Airways Gold Lounge, open to British Airways Executive Club Silver members who are flying in Economy or are on ‘Business Light’ cash tickets.

Full details of all Qatar Airways lounges can be found on this page of its website.

  • Andrew J says:

Al Mourjan not Al Maha is the name of the main business class lounge.

  • Mohamed says:

Strange you mention all business class AVIOS ticket get you access to Al Maha while I have twitter confirmation from Qatar Airways I get access to Al Mourjan and Heathrow 4 premium lounge and that’s been experienced by many previous travellers, reward business class ticket get access to premium lounges

    • Rob says:

      Typo. Meant Al Mourjan. Apologies.

    • Phillip says:

I have experienced both in the space of 4 weeks recently. Getting into the main lounge at LHR on a reward ticket, no questions asked, and then a few weeks later being told that (and given a printed boarding pass stating) no lounge access. At Doha, on the latter trip, although told no access to Al Mourjan, once I got there and following a bit of computer work, access was granted! I’m not sure what’s triggering the changes and if something has changed!

  • DaveP says:

Can a BA gold card holder take a guest into the Platinum lounge?

  • Greenpen says:

Why call the lounge for sapphires, who for BA are silver, gold and the lounge for emeralds, BA gold, platinum?

Should result is frustrating confusion for one or two!

    • bsuije says:

Perhaps because the sapphire and emerald tiers in Qatar’s own loyalty programme are Gold and Platinum, respectively? =)

      • Rob says:

BA is weird in having Gold as its top tier. Most schemes have Gold as a middle tier with Platinum / Diamond above it and Silver at the bottom.

        • Jonathan says:

BA does have Premier as its highest tier, but getting considered for it in first place is something that nearly all of us can only ever dream of.

Getting that membership level also isn’t as simple as travelling in Club or First very frequently either !

  • Mikel says:

Any lounges at Doha I can pay to get my son in when he’s heading to Oz next month ?

  • Nick Pike says:

I must confess I actually prefer the Platinum lounge to the Al Mourjan main lounge- you don’t have a 20 minute queue for the loo at peak times, the seats are more comfortable if you wish to relax, the ‘grazing’ food is much nicer and you don’t have that enormous pool on the ground floor which serves no useful purpose other than presenting you getting from one side of the lounge to another….

    • Dubious says:

I’ve not been there myself, but from the photos in the article it looks like the Platinum Lounge is the only one with some windows and natural light.

  • elt164 says:

“If you don’t have access to the ‘official’ Qatar Airways business class lounges due to your cash ticket being too cheap (all Avios business class tickets get you into the ‘official’ Al Maha lounge) or if you are flying in economy, this is a more than adequate replacement.”

    I’m def confused!
Will be BA Gold flying on Qatar Bus class later this year.
So is this Plat lounge not as good as the “official” Qatar Bus lounge?
And how do I know definitively which lounges I can use?
Also is there a max time before flight you can enter?
    Thanks for any help

    • Rob says:

It’s nowhere near as good as the ‘new’ Business Class lounge in The Orchard will be, no. However, as the comments say, it is a lot quieter than the current Business Class lounge and for that reason some prefer it.

Are you on an Avios ticket? You can use the ‘proper’ Al Mourjan business class lounges. Are you on a ‘Business Light’ cash ticket? You are banned from the Al Mourjan lounges so you need to go to this lounge. Are you on a standard Business Class cash ticket? You can go to the Al Mourjan lounges.

      • AndyC says:

Rob – does an Avios First Class ticket on QR get one into the Al Safwa First lounge?

        • VALittleRed says:

Yes if it is a full redemption

        • Paul says:

Yes it does. I was there for 4 hours earlier this month while in Transit to AUH from CPH on a Avios ticket. It’s a cathedral full of artefacts but the spa is stupidly expensive.

There are a lot of comments on Flyertalk QR suggesting it is a shadow of its former self. But when the primary comparison is with BA then is is an epic experience that BA could only dream of.

          • Rob says:

When I was there they reserved a private room for me for a couple of hours before my flight home. Totally crackpot – I’ve had smaller hotel rooms. Came with bed, desk and shower, albeit no windows.

  • bsuije says:

Slightly OT: do BA Gold get same benefits at Doha as Qatar Platinum members? Specifically interested in the Al Maha Services (connecting in Doha on separate tickets and not convinced that will get baggage check-through from origin because first flight is a QR code-share. Connection only 1.5h so if Al Maha Services can speed up immigration, bag collection and check-in again, then that would help!).

    • elt164 says:

I contacted Al Maha to check this same question. After 5 emails with them repeating same line “Al Maha services are for Q plat” but not actually answering my question it seems as if they are not available to help BA Golds.
But do try them and pl post answer if you have more success.

      • Marc says:

Doesn’t “Al Maha services are for Q plat” answer your question? It’s a service for Qatar Platinum, not OW Emerald in general.

    • babyg says:

Not sure Al Maha service helps with interlining baggage… If your bags are on a single PNR i wouldnt worry 1.5hrs is loads .. even on separate PNR QR are a great at interlining to other oneworld carriers…
