A week ago, British Airways announced a new partnership with Uber.

BA is promising 250 Avios just for registering, so this offer is of interest even if you are only an occasional Uber user.

You couldn’t register when the deal was announced, but iPhone users who downloaded the app update released yesterday CAN now register. It also seems to have activated for Android users in the last day or so.

EDIT: Some people cannot register for the offer. From our comments, we have deduced that you cannot register if your last Uber ride was outside the UK, even if your account is linked to a UK mobile number. If you take an Uber ride in the UK it should appear.

Earn Avios from Uber

How does the Avios / Uber deal work?

The new Uber deal will let you collect 1 Avios for every £1 you spend on travel in the UK via the Uber app.

As well as rides, you will also earn on coach and train tickets booked via the app in the UK.

You do not earn anything for Uber Eats orders.

As a launch bonus, everyone who links their British Airways Executive Club and Uber accounts via the Uber app by 31st December will receive 250 bonus Avios.

How do you register?

iPhone users need the app update released yesterday, version 3.536.10003 (which, I note, is a shocking 361MB – that is a ludicrous 7,500 times bigger than the entire memory of my old 48k ZX Spectrum computer in the mid 1980s!).

Open the app and click ‘Account’ in the bottom right, followed by ‘Settings’. You will see this:

Collect Avios from Uber

Click through and you’ll be taken to a page where you can link your Uber account to your British Airways account.

It isn’t clear how long it will take for the 250 Avios for registration to appear, but based on what we have been told it does NOT require you to take a ride before they appear.

Didn’t see the option to link with Uber despite having the latest iOS app.

However, I did take the opportunity to visit Privacy -> Privacy Centre and turn it all off, including push notifications, personalised ads, and the sharing your data with “advertising partners”. Took 30 seconds and under GDPR they get fined if they don’t comply.

    • Rob says:

People who turn off personalised ads are weird. I’d rather see a bunch of travel ads and ads for posh London shops than the nonsense that would get served up at random.

  • cinereus says:

Why are you comparing disk space with memory? They are not remotely equivalent.

  • Oliver says:

I linked my Uber account to my BA account but never got an email confirmation. They happen to have 2 different emails, could this be the issue?

  • Ken says:

I get offered an update to this stupidly large app about once a week (“We update …as often as possible…”). I usually update every month or two.
Anyway, I’ve just linked my BAEC account using v3.526.10000, so it does not seem necessary to waste data on an update.

  • hackinjack says:

All worked for me thie morning but this afternoon I see a charge from Uber for £5.99 applied to my Amex account – despite not having used Uber for a couple of weeks. Anyone else seen this?

    • SteveJ says:

That’s the monthly cost of Uber One. My guess is you’d signed up to a free trial and forgotten to withdraw before they started to charge you.

  • FearlessTraveller says:

Does the avios earning work only in the UK or even abroad?

  • Justin says:

I’m slightly shocked at the response to the Privacy questions. In a way its a good thing – thats what GDPR was supposed to do! But if you think about the permissions they are asking for it is all to be able to connect with the BA Executive club and request to post points to the account. This is very similar to any other Avios partner including Nectar (see the BA/Nectar Privacy Information)

If you are not currently an Uber user, I can understand why you might not want another company handling your data. However, the amount of data that we all give away to Google et al every day is more intrusive and valuable and being sold on to even more people organisations.

  • William Kerr says:

No link to BAEC in the UYber settings – any suggestions please !!
