British Airways has started to roll out its Summer 2023 schedule with a number of new routes announced today.

As usual, this means that Avios availability on these routes is wide open. You will find 14 Avios seats (four Business, two Premium Economy, eight Economy) bookable now on all of these flights.

When I say ‘now’, I mean as at 11.45am on Wednesday. Snooze and you WILL lose, especially for The Maldives.

How to book Avios seats to Maldives

The Maldives

British Airways is bringing back Heathrow to The Maldives as a year round service. Flights were due to end in late March at the end of the Winter flying season.

Outbound flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with the return the following day.

This SeatSpy screenshot show days with 2 x Club World business class seats bookable for Avios, as of 11.15am.

Seats are wide open from the end of March until mid August, which is as far out as you can book at the moment.

Las Vegas is back!

The popular service from London Gatwick to Las Vegas is also resuming for Summer 2023, which in airline terms means from the last week of March to the last week of October.

Flights will depart three times per week, on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, returning the same day.

The outbound departs Gatwick at 11am, landing at 1.50pm. The return leaves Las Vegas at 3.40pm, landing the next day at 9.40am.

Here is SeatSpy availability for two Club World seats as at 11.15:

Vancouver is launching as a new London Gatwick route

This is a surprise one. British Airways is launching flights from Gatwick to Vancouver next Summer, complementing the Heathrow service.

This starts later than the other routes, from 19th May. Flights will be daily except Tuesday.

The outbound flight leaves Gatwick at noon, landing at 1.35pm. The return leaves Vancouver at 3.25pm, landing in Gatwick at 8.40am on the following day.

This is from SeatSpy this morning for days with two Club World business class seats for Avios:

Buenos Aires returns as a direct service

Finally, British Airways has announced the return of direct flights to Buenos Aires from Heathrow.

This has, for a while, operated via Sao Paulo whilst loads were too low to justify separate flights to each city.

The new service will operate five days per week.

Happy booking! Remember that seats only open up 355 days in advance, so the latest you can book today will be mid August 2023.

Terrific! MLE booked. Still loads of seats at 13.00, btw.

    • CatchFlightsNotFeelings says:

everything i try and book tells me its sold out 🙁

      • James says:

Same for me. Get right up until the Amex Verification page then it tells me its sold out – Gutted!

        • CatchFlightsNotFeelings says:

Ive tried all various dates and nothing for 3 hours. Whats the trick haha

  • meandthekids says:

Sorry for lots of questions- Can the taxes and charges be paid with an evoucher if you phone up? I don’t know how my evoucher will be used! Are they transferable? Thank you

    • ChrisC says:

No evouchers can’t be used to pay these.

They aren’t strictly transferrable but they aren’t specifically tied to you so you could use them to book for someone else.

Remember you still have over a year to use them – must fly by 30th September 2023

      • meandthekids says:

Thank you. It’s not likely for us as we can only travel term time and everything until September 2023 is booked. I have just come across this “ You can give your eVoucher to someone else if you want to, just remember that they will need the eVoucher number and name details, and it can only be used once.”

      • Alan says:

So frustrating that these can’t be used for taxes/fees/charges.

  • Claire Howarth says:

So I’m a complete newbie when it comes to Avios and companion vouchers – atm I can get outbound flights but it’s too early for the return what is the best way to secure the seats ? Thanks

    • Rhys says:

You have to wait until they become available 355 days in advance. You then want to call the BA call centre (normally US or Japan, or another international one that is open) at midnight GMT (1am BST) and get them to add it to your booking.

      • john says:

To clarify, this means you book the outbound flights online now with the 2-for-1 voucher as a one-way, and then at 355 days you get the return added on via calling up the call centre as Rhys says at midnight GMT.

  • Cwyfan says:

    Bring back Calgary!

  • Rich says:

Gutted. On holiday and left my Amex at home!

    • NorthernLass says:

Amateur – you should have the details in your phone for exactly this kind of thing!!

    • ChrisC says:

No one at home to get the details for you?

Is there an account you have that has the card number visible and all you need to remember is the ccv and expiry dates?

      • Dezmeralda says:

+1. My details pop up automatically now on any payment page I visit and I just need to put in cvv and expiry date.

      • Gordon says:

Another option is calling Amex, Not sure if they will give you your card details if you clear security.
        Just a thought…..

  • meandthekids says:

Also, using a companion voucher, Does anyone know what the cost is doing this for Dublin /Lhr/ Mle?
I have just used the companion voucher for a male booking from London RFS which has used up all my avios so I wanted to understand the difference if done via Dublin or Inverness or whichever.
Have asked on the Dublin start thread too.
    Thank you

  • Tracy says:

I have a 241 expiring June 2023, I considered a week in Vegas but just can’t stomach the taxes again plus both my Dec 2022 and March 2023 long haul 241 trips coming up have been amended already…looks like I will just let this 241 expire. I have one more just about at the 10k spend mark and am holding off as long as possible as I will be using it September 2024 then I think I’ll be waving goodbye to my BA amex 🙁

    • meandthekids says:

We have had 2 gone to waste too which feels a shame as we took the cards out only for the 241s!

      • Tracy says:

gone to waste due to lack of travel over covid or by choice? I have managed to use 2/3 of my 241s earning of the past years and using for special occasions

        • meandthekids says:

Hi Tracy, We had all our travel booked very cheaply for school holiday through covid easyJet cancellations and the easyJet vouchers that became available last year so we were able to have every half term booked with them much cheaper than avios plus taxes. Also we haven’t needed a long haul flight with young kids but next year is a special anniversary so we would love to do Maldives.

          • Tracy says:

I feel the same, especially living in Scotland, some lccs are a must better option for us, we flew Ryanair to Italy for our summer hols this year lol. We are using one of our 241s to do Maldives in December this year for our 25th wedding anniversary too, a decent use of the 241.

    • Rob says:

Taxes DUB-LHR/LGW-LAS-LGW/LHR-DUB are around £350 in Business.

      • meandthekids says:

Rob, do you know the MLE equivalent? Only issue for us is we would be taking 5 of us and only 4 business classes flights come up but economy is otherwise an option if the prices are massively different. It was 260k avios and £750 for 5 of us in economy in RFS and used a 241.

        • NorthernLass says:

I would imagine RFS will be the cheapest cash option you will get in economy, but you can do a dummy booking and get a quote regardless of how many avios you have.

          • meandthekids says:

Sorry I’m really thick I thought you had to have the new companion voucher to see availability and prices for non-uk departure avios flights. I will have a look. Wanted to also see how the avios spend differed. Thank you

          • meandthekids says:

I just tried Robs route without any vouchers etc for dates available next august and it shows as 181k avios and £600 for one person. I am clearly doing something very wrong!

  • James carp says:

If booked with a 241 and avios etc but decide within 24hrs to cancel, are you’d till charged the £35pp or is that just after the 24hr cooling off period? Thanks.

    • Rob says:

      Free in cooling off period.

      • James carp says:

        Thanks for this.
Although same problem as everyone else. Getting through to completing payment page and states as all sold out!
