IT’S BACK, BE QUICK: Many IHG hotels showing at half price or less for points!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The crazy IHG redemption deal which popped up a couple of Sundays ago is back. Whether or not it is an IT error, you should MOVE NOW.

Many IHG hotels globally, for many dates, are currently bookable for roughly half – or less – the usual number of points.

The pricing appears to be:

  • Kimpton – 45,000 points
  • Regent / InterContinental – 35,000 points to 45,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo – 30,000 points
  • Crowne Plaza – 25,000 points
  • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express – 20,000 points

Last time I booked Kimpton Paris and the new Kimpton Mallorca for 45,000 points and InterContinental London for 40,000 points.

The Kimpton Paris, for the date I wanted, was over 100,000 points per night when I looked a few days earlier, with a €660 cash rate.

It isn’t clear if not all hotels are taking part or only certain dates are included. I can’t get the InterContinental Amstel (below) for when I need to be in Amsterdam, for example, but I know others have booked it.

The real value here is at hotels which are usually hugely expensive for cash and would therefore be 100,000+ points per night under IHG’s new dyanamic pricing model. Not every hotel is a bargain under this deal – in some cheap cities, prices will have gone up today because these are properties which benefit from dynamic points pricing.

Funamentally …. if you’re getting over 1p per point it is a steal. If you’re getting 0.75p per point it is far better than normal. If you’re getting 0.4p to 0.5p per point then don’t get excited – this is what you’d usually expect.

This could be a mistake but it could be an unprecedented flash sale which is due to be announced tomorrow. Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not included, which leads me to believe that this is a deliberate sale of some sort. Regardless, it is worth making some speculative bookings – remember that all reward nights can be cancelled.

Don’t hang around – with free cancellation there is NO downside, albeit check the rules for peak times such as New Year’s Eve.

Should you buy points?

There is currently a 75% bonus if you buy IHG points. You can buy here.

People who did this last time said that they were posting immediately. I am not guaranteeing this to you but it is working for others. Note that some people had issues when trying to make multiple purchases as security delays appear to kick in.

The ‘buy points’ page is here if you choose to risk it. You can learn more about IHG One Rewards in our overview article here.

Ooh lovely. Got the Leicester Square Indigo on a a Saturday night for 30k

    • Tracy says:

Wouldn’t go there even if you paid me……last time I stayed the room was filthy and maintenance came into room twice as I was in the shower…..the shower is glass and visible from the door!

  • John says:

Coincidentally I was looking at IC Athens yesterday for 18k per night (last week of Sept), but today it’s risen to 40k.

    • Craig V says:

Its not worth 40K per night. Miserable place with fake upgrade from Classic to Classic City View even if you’re Diamond. They want €80 for Club access. 🙂

      • John says:

        Thanks, will avoid.

      • Pangolin says:

€90 is what they wanted from me when I stayed there a few weeks ago

Anything less than a club room means your view of the Parthenon is blocked by some ugly building

    • John says:

Replying to myself : it fell back to 29k after the sale ended!

  • Go197 says:

Thanks, very helpful and useful. Seems I got excited for nothing!

  • estrangeiro8 says:

Just to say that if you are looking to buy points, they post very quickly. I bought some this morning and they were showing in my IHG account almost immediately.

Thanks for the heads-up on this deal to Rob, Rhys and team – and glad it returned. Managed to book the IC Rome for a weekend next year for 40k points per night.

    • UKFE says:

Been waiting three hours for mine so presumably bit of chance involved.

    • Andrew J says:

It’s the same rate and easier to just do cash and points. And that way there’s no chance of buying points which by the time you go to book the rate has gone.

      • James says:

If you have no points it doesn’t let you purchase with cash and points though? Plus don’t you have to buy points to get the 80-100% bonus they’re currently offering?

      • Tariq says:

Didn’t have enough points in my account to book cash and points. Bought 77k points and they posted within minutes.

  • Supergers49 says:

Rebooked 10 individual night reservations in Singapore for a 110,000 point saving. Rebooked 2 individual night reservations in Dumfries for a 10,000 point saving. Put some of the savings towards a trip to Madrid in December. Unfortunately, I suspect IHG think my account has been hacked is it won’t let me log-in on the website, thought the App is working fine.

  • Luxury Trip Reports says:

Just booked one of the Kimpton’s in LA for 1 night, as doing a Tier point run and was planning to stay in the airport or a cheap hotel.

Will send you guys pictures!! Thanks to all of you 🙂

  • Tony says:

Managed to book the IC Park Lane for two nights at 40k each then the IHG site ceased working. Have we broken it? Anyone else having a problem?

  • Andrew J says:

To double check – AMB benefits at ICs booker with points are not guaranteed but still likely? Late checkout I’m particularly interested in.

    • NorthernLass says:

Should get benefits at IC regardless of how you pay, are you getting mixed up with using the BOGOF at Kimptons?

      • Andrew J says:

Thanks Anna, I think I’m getting confused by the upgrade guarantee – that isn’t guaranteed on points bookings (although hopefully still likely as Diamond AMB) but all other benefits are still guaranteed (or comped with 10k points per failure). I interrogated the AMB T&Cs

        • NorthernLass says:

Check your e-standby upgrade offers as well, these can be incredible value and hotels usually honour them if you contact them beforehand.

          • Andrew J says:

I don’t think I’ve even been able to see where these are. Should it be in the app, website?
