IT’S BACK, BE QUICK: Many IHG hotels showing at half price or less for points!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The crazy IHG redemption deal which popped up a couple of Sundays ago is back. Whether or not it is an IT error, you should MOVE NOW.

Many IHG hotels globally, for many dates, are currently bookable for roughly half – or less – the usual number of points.

The pricing appears to be:

  • Kimpton – 45,000 points
  • Regent / InterContinental – 35,000 points to 45,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo – 30,000 points
  • Crowne Plaza – 25,000 points
  • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express – 20,000 points

Last time I booked Kimpton Paris and the new Kimpton Mallorca for 45,000 points and InterContinental London for 40,000 points.

The Kimpton Paris, for the date I wanted, was over 100,000 points per night when I looked a few days earlier, with a €660 cash rate.

It isn’t clear if not all hotels are taking part or only certain dates are included. I can’t get the InterContinental Amstel (below) for when I need to be in Amsterdam, for example, but I know others have booked it.

The real value here is at hotels which are usually hugely expensive for cash and would therefore be 100,000+ points per night under IHG’s new dyanamic pricing model. Not every hotel is a bargain under this deal – in some cheap cities, prices will have gone up today because these are properties which benefit from dynamic points pricing.

Funamentally …. if you’re getting over 1p per point it is a steal. If you’re getting 0.75p per point it is far better than normal. If you’re getting 0.4p to 0.5p per point then don’t get excited – this is what you’d usually expect.

This could be a mistake but it could be an unprecedented flash sale which is due to be announced tomorrow. Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not included, which leads me to believe that this is a deliberate sale of some sort. Regardless, it is worth making some speculative bookings – remember that all reward nights can be cancelled.

Don’t hang around – with free cancellation there is NO downside, albeit check the rules for peak times such as New Year’s Eve.

Should you buy points?

There is currently a 75% bonus if you buy IHG points. You can buy here.

People who did this last time said that they were posting immediately. I am not guaranteeing this to you but it is working for others. Note that some people had issues when trying to make multiple purchases as security delays appear to kick in.

The ‘buy points’ page is here if you choose to risk it. You can learn more about IHG One Rewards in our overview article here.

    Don’t assume this is no-brainer.

The Crowne Plaza I am currently in was 17k when booked a day before arrival. Currently 25k.

And the Indigo in Berlin which was 22k (again, booked a day or two before arrival) is 30k.

Is the ihg site being slow/not working now? I dont seem to be able to login anymore

  • Novice says:

It’s taking ages. I bought points which haven’t been awarded yet. Knowing my luck, they’ll post as soon as the deal is dead. 😂

3 rooms booked in Istanbul at the end of July – used points & cash at 7,000 per night plus $33 – on IHG this morning 12,333 points plus $31. Definitely not worth cancelling and re-booking!!

  • PG says:

Do cash + point bookings count towards status challenge nights?

  • Ben says:

Is it possible to book family rooms with points? We have a 3 year old but when I search for 2 adults and 1 child in a room, there’s zero points availability anywhere.

    • Rob says:

No. You need to book something and then email the hotel asking if you can pay for an upgrade to a suitable room, and then cancel if they can’t.

    • NorthernLass says:

Try searching for 2 adults. This often shows rooms which sleep 3 or 4, but if you put more than 2 people in the search field they don’t appear. It’s quite a common IHG anomaly.

Thanks for the heads up. Booked Miami Kimpton Epic for 70K per night, during the Basel Art Fair weekend – I was actually looking last night and it was 136k per night for the dates. Cash prices for Basel weekend are through the roof, so a great spot.

Can I book on IHG for our son and daughter-in-law?

    • Rob says:

If he turns up claiming to be you, and its a UK hotel where no passport needs to be shown, yes. Othersise tricky, especially if you have status.

    • Sprout says:

I’ve done it many times for my son and his partner by just calling them and giving them his name. It hasn’t been an issue at all.

      • Rob says:

Many countries have laws over registered guests having to show ID to match the name so you need to know what’s the local rule.

        • Sprout says:

That’s why I say to call IHG and they put the room in his name.

          • JPa says:

You can add an additional guest as part of the booking. Did that at the Kimpton Eventi in NY on my wife’s last credit card free night. Took my passport scan and didn’t even ask where my wife was. Also got free breakfast as my wife is Diamond for myself and two children (one of who was 18 so not technically a child, but they don’t ask for id for children). I did book as 2 adults / 2 children to cover that she might be going.
