Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

(DEAL DEAD) BE QUICK: Most IHG hotels showing at half price or less for points!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I am typing this on Sunday afternoon – it’s not clear how long this deal will last.

EDIT: It died around 8pm on Sunday

Most IHG hotels globally, for all dates (albeit not the very short term), are currently bookable for roughly half – or less – the usual number of points.

The pricing appears to be:

  • Kimpton – 45,000 points
  • Regent / InterContinental – 35,000 points to 45,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo – 30,000 points
  • Crowne Plaza – 25,000 points
  • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express – 20,000 points

I just booked Kimpton Paris and the new Kimpton Mallorca for 45,000 points and InterContinental London for 40,000 points.

The Kimpton Paris, for the date I wanted, was over 100,000 points per night when I looked a week or so ago, with a €660 cash rate.

It isn’t clear if not all hotels are taking part or only certain dates are included. I can’t get the InterContinental Amstel for when I need to be in Amsterdam, for example, but I know others have booked it.

You can even lock in the Maldives etc at hugely discounted rates.

This could be a mistake but it could be an unprecedented flash sale which is due to be announced tomorrow. Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not included, which leads me to believe that this is a deliberate sale of some sort. Regardless, it is worth making some speculative bookings – remember that all reward nights can be cancelled.

Should you buy points?

Today (Sunday) is the last day to get a 100% bonus if you buy IHG points. You can buy here.

People who have done it say that they are posting immediately. I am not guaranteeing this to you but it is working for others.

With the bonus you’re paying around 0.4p per point so, for example, my Kimpton Paris stay – which is €660 for cash – would need £180-worth of purchased points.

The ‘buy points’ page is here if you choose to risk it.

Points confirmation said “pending – will process within 72hrs” – hopefully they arrive before the sale/glitch ends 🙂

  • NorthernLass says:

Possibly the best value ever – HIE in Edinburgh £392 for cash or 20k points 😂😂😂

    • Lady London says:

Wow. That counts as an error fare in that location NorthernLass 🙂

  • NorthernLass says:

… and don’t forget to check for your magic e-standby upgrades which seem to appear whenever I book an IC these days!

    • Helpmeplease says:

      What is this?

      • NorthernLass says:

You’re not kidding about the name, are you?!
Look at your booking and somewhere on it there will be a red logo asking you to click on it for upgrade offers. They’re not guaranteed but if you contact the hotel and ask they usually confirm them.

I’m very new to all this! Only recently became a follower but have a huge pile of points through work travel!

I can’t seem to see this anywhere on my bookings and I’ve got about 20 nights booked!

  • George K says:

Has anyone been able to do a 4th night free IC booking? I am being quote the full whack for 4 nights, and not sure if that’s a glitch…

    • Harry T says:

I presume this is a phenomenon related to US credit cards? I don’t think most of the HFP readers will be able to do that anyway.

      • George K says:

you’re right – I got confused and cancelled my reservation, but rebooked it. IHG doesn’t allow for modifications, not online at least…

      • BJ says:

There was the suggestion of 20% discounts for Diamond when Ohe Rewards launched IIRC. I think some confused these with 5 nights for 4 but I think all they meant was periodic 20% discounts or something like that. I’m not sure if we have seen any so far.

    • BJ says:

OT @Grorge, some others added to discussion on seat selection the other day, unsure if you saw. Useful points on recline etc.

  • Lady London says:

Grrrr wish I had not got so low on IHG points and they aren’t worth buying

  • Neil says:

Looks like they are going back up, couple of hotels I was looking at booking have jumped back to what they would have been before this flash sale

  • DZOO says:

    Looks dead now…

  • Andrew says:

Deal dead. Must have been an error.

    • marcw says:

Don’t say the E error. Also, without any redemption tables, how can it be an error? Some redemptions went UP in price.

      • BJ says:

Correct, all Bangkok rates went up without exception dates I checked.
