(DEAL DEAD) BE QUICK: Most IHG hotels showing at half price or less for points!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I am typing this on Sunday afternoon – it’s not clear how long this deal will last.

EDIT: It died around 8pm on Sunday

Most IHG hotels globally, for all dates (albeit not the very short term), are currently bookable for roughly half – or less – the usual number of points.

The pricing appears to be:

  • Kimpton – 45,000 points
  • Regent / InterContinental – 35,000 points to 45,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo – 30,000 points
  • Crowne Plaza – 25,000 points
  • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express – 20,000 points

I just booked Kimpton Paris and the new Kimpton Mallorca for 45,000 points and InterContinental London for 40,000 points.

The Kimpton Paris, for the date I wanted, was over 100,000 points per night when I looked a week or so ago, with a €660 cash rate.

It isn’t clear if not all hotels are taking part or only certain dates are included. I can’t get the InterContinental Amstel for when I need to be in Amsterdam, for example, but I know others have booked it.

You can even lock in the Maldives etc at hugely discounted rates.

This could be a mistake but it could be an unprecedented flash sale which is due to be announced tomorrow. Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not included, which leads me to believe that this is a deliberate sale of some sort. Regardless, it is worth making some speculative bookings – remember that all reward nights can be cancelled.

Should you buy points?

Today (Sunday) is the last day to get a 100% bonus if you buy IHG points. You can buy here.

People who have done it say that they are posting immediately. I am not guaranteeing this to you but it is working for others.

With the bonus you’re paying around 0.4p per point so, for example, my Kimpton Paris stay – which is €660 for cash – would need £180-worth of purchased points.

The ‘buy points’ page is here if you choose to risk it.

Didn’t get half price , but have 19,000 points back in piggy bank , many thanks

  • drdan says:

Guys…I pointed this out to Rob earlier today.

This is what IHG hotels used to cost, it was a fixed number of points with the old Priority Club..an H I in San Fran cost the same as an HI Doncaster…!!

Then inflation dragged up the number required over the years and then dynamic pricing…

    Guess where people redeemed?

I’ve filled my boots for Oz and Singapore outbound!!

    • Lady London says:

The US was back to the previous proper brand-based pricing for all the dates I checked. Although IC’s probably worth more, surprisingly the old more fixed rates felt ‘right’ for the hotels. Whereas current dynamic pricing often doesn’t feel ‘right’ except in peak periods

  • RJ says:

My first two points + points purchases credited immediately. Just made a 3rd and it says up to 72hrs.

  • PG says:

Is Holiday Inn Maldives at 25,000 half price rate?

    • Rob says:

Normal rate is about 0.4p per point, so the typical cash rate for a 25k hotel would be £60 per night. I’m guessing it costs more than that.

You’d be mad booking that if the InterCon resorts etc are 30/40k though, albeit food etc is more reasonable at the HI.

      • PG says:

Yes Holiday Inn is normally £225 per night. I can’t find any points dates available for Intercontinental. Is it possible to view points dates at a glance?

    • George K says:

Make sure you factor in the extra transport cost of $120pp.

      • PG says:

Yes factored that in thanks. Just trying to cost breakfast at this will be room only. I think that’ll be $37 USD pppn

I think I’ll go for HI. Can I get a sanity check on this..

If I buy points at 0.4p for 25k a night, that’s £100 a night vs cash cost of £225 a night. So this is worth going for

  • numpty says:

Rebooked a 7 night stay in EVEN Brooklyn to Crowne Plaza Manhattan, plus 2 nights at the new Indigo Leicester Square. Plus some points to spare.

Along with free breakfast for being a diamond member.

  • Simon says:

It’s agonisingly close to that edge of great deal and glitch. I’ve rebooked an existing reservation so let’s hope they honour it cos I won’t be able to rebook at the original rate

  • DavidC says:

Indigo Stratford on Avon for August 8 , 45000 points. Yesterday 23000 points. CP Harrogate for September 2 – 5 , 39333 points. Yesterday 24000 points. HIE Exeter for August 15 -19 33250 points. Yesterday 20000 points. Glad I booked before today!

  • George K says:

Cleared out 200k of points for €3000+ worth of IC rooms in Paris and Rome.

Now need to figure out how to add a toddler in what appear to be stupidly small base rooms. Maybe investing in Ambassador is in order…

    • Rob says:

The base rooms at Paris LeG are so small that you can touch both walls if you stick your arms out, pretty much. Of course Diamond Elite should also get you out of those.

      • George K says:

Thanks Rob – I am only Platinum, so I think Ambassador beckons…

      • Brighton Belle says:

I’m IHG diamond this year but spiralling into the void in January. I would buy Ambassador if it sustained IHG diamond for another year especially as I booked the Paris Intercontinental for 5 nights just now and free breakfast would be a bonus. Since I’ve never been Ambassador I was rather hoping the extension trick might work. Thoughts on a success?

        • NorthernLass says:

BB – it worked for me recently even though membership had lapsed. I made sure I was signed into the account all through the process, don’t know if it made a difference. Hat tip to @meta!
